What do you feed your ants?

I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong. My queen has around 60-100 workers and she decides to waste her time producing tons of elates.

What if I do not have a test tube?

Another thing about online is you can be sure youre getting the species you want ahead of time! Some ant species and even genae that are local/Native take a little bit more effort to find and catch, or are just rarer to find out in the wild because they're more reclusive. Just do some due dilligence with research and make sure the species you want is not invasive to your area. Generally while it's considered ok to catch and raise invasive species already in your area, there is a bit of a taboo about spreading them outside of their areas via purchasing and possible escape. In the US, you will be limited to buy from within your state, and outside you'll be limited by local regulations about where you can purchase. That being said, the hobby is very social (like our little friends!) and many shops if they cant sell to you, they usually have links thay can help find a local antkeeper to buy from!

I really want to keep this species, and i have a few questions i was struggling to get the answer too, do they have super soldiers? Are they ok at room temperature (20-25°C)? And do they do ok in a acrilic nest? I have a successfull lasius niger and messor barbarus conoly and i really want another one i was thinking this speices (pheidole pallidula) or mabey some sugar ants? Do you have any suggestions?

I love pallidula, my colony has 100+ workers and quite a few majors, they are amazing with their swarm ability, but i cant agree with the escape one, my colony never tried to escape, Monomorium floricola, thats something different when it comes to escaping tho 😂

Only just starting my ant keeping journey, I have a lasius Niger queen with her first cocoons can’t wait to see the first ‘nanitics’ running around, hopefully one day I’ll be experienced enough to own pheidole

Btw in a test tube setup don’t push the cotton ball that far down as the ants will run out of water quicker warranting more frequent nest changes
