It's not just concerts, workshops, and serious stuff at the Blowout. Andy Stevens has put together a few scenes of the other things that goes on, such as the Friday and Saturday night sessions, impromptu sessions, and the Saturday night Bal, but starting with the Friday night competition. This year's subject was biscuits, and nuts! Extra points were awarded for singing.

    Names are a perpetual source of confusion and should be treated with lenience especially when applied to recent developments. What we now call border pipes were well established both sides of the Scottish border in the 18th century. They gradually fell out of use and disappeared In 1930s. The revival led to several variants with different names. Roughly, those with Scottish style chanter are Scottish border/lowland pipes, those with a newer model chanter are simply called border pipes.

    I’ve got border pipes and they are definitely Scottish. I don’t think border pipes existed at all in the English tradition, the ones with the closed pipe at the bottom are English though. I speak on impression, haven’t studied the subject.

    It’s amazing how little air Mr York’s pipes seem to need… either that or he has enormous lungs. Anyway, very enjoyable both. Makes me yearn for spring and some verdancy. Not long now!

    Hi, I'm an absolute beginner on my pipes, and I can't manage to keep the note going while I top up the bag via the blowpipe. Is this normal when you first start, and do you have any tips for arriving at a point where you can play a constant note? I really like your calm, reassuring manner of presentation, by the way!

    • @TheBagpipeSociety
      @TheBagpipeSociety 2 роки тому

      Hi. This is perfectly normal when you start. You are re-training and strengthening muscles and this takes time. Exercise 1: inflate bag to 90 -95% full (approximately). Remove your mouth from the blowpipe, then squeeze steadily and keep the note going for as long as you can. Check which muscles are needed and try to relax the other ones, especially the gripping ones (not so easy to do!). When you are comfortable with this: Exercise 2: Repeat as for exercise 1, but this time blow steadily re-fill the bag after about 5-6 seconds. Stop at 90%. While doing this you will need to slightly reduce arm pressure so the pressure in the bag is steady. Eventually this will become an automatic action and you will not need to think about it, but you will need to be patient! I can be contacted via info@bagpipesociety.org.uk Good luck

    1634, the performance of 'The Late Lancashire Witches' in London, with its Lancashire Piper in Act 3 ("no Witchcraft can take hold of a Lancashire Bag-pipe, for itselfe is able to charme the Divell"). This play and the events leading up to it created a burst of interest in Lancashire and its local culture. The play is full of hunting, though of hares, for which the county was famous. Maybe a reasonable bet that the transcription of the piece derives from music performed in what was a well-resourced and very successful play. The scene in the play demanded something amazing and wild like this: here's a stage direction: "Daunce. Lawrence and Parnell reele in the daunce. At the end Mal vanishes & the piper." So glad to hear and see it performed!
