Does insulin REALLY make you gain weight?
One of the main barriers to starting insulin is the notion that people gain weight. But is this really true and if so, why does this happen?
In this video I demonstrate how insulin works and why it might not necessarily be the insulin that is causing you to gain weight.

    Great informative video thank you. I was diagnosed yesterday with a prediabetes range of 44, I weight 43kg, eat extremely healthy, never smoked and work out 6 days a week. I have questioned blood test results with my gp before as I always ask for my medical records and over the years after a blood test it's always stated....this patient should be monitored regularly as in a category for diabetes, but when Ive questioned it, the gp would always say to me that i dont fit into any of the categories. It's clear I do and need address what's happening to my BGL but I have no idea where to start. I rang my gp surgery yesterday and they say just to wait until next years blood test to see what my reading is. That's not something I want to do as I could then be diabetic.

I now on very low carb diet, but high in fats have managed after one year to take myself out of pre-diabetes by 0.1 It's certainly not been easy.

    I had T2D for many years, Metformin couldnt take my blood sugar down. I had had low testosterone levels for at least 10 years. Now after about 8 months in testosterone replacent therapy (TRT) my diabetes is gone. More muscles, less fat, testosterone enhances glygemic control, it way better treatment than any diabetes drug for hypogonadal men. I really couldnt believe it would cure my diabetes but here I am, diabetes free and never stopping TRT. T2D people check your testosterone levels since many of you have low T and the cure can be pretty simple: TRT and some changes to your diet and exercise routines if they arent already good. Im not sure but it can also help women with low T.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 19 днів тому

      Hi alpha beta Unfortunately I can’t There’s an easy test that will tell you immediately if you have diabetes or not - HbA1c. So go see the doc In fairness, what you describe does not sound like type 2 diabetes People with type 2 don’t typically struggle to gain weight - in fact it’s normally the reason they get type 2 in the first place Type 1 on the other hand or LADA (slow onset type 1) is when people struggle to gain weight. However, type 1 is usually a very quick onset so you’d likely know by now if you had that. LADA is a bit different but just go see the doc. They could have a answer for you within a couple of days

    • @AlphaBeta-vq6ks
      @AlphaBeta-vq6ks 19 днів тому

    Why don't T2 use insulin? I suffered with strict protein diet for years taking metformin then blood sugar took off now dose basal and mealtime. I eat about 50 grams per meal no problem. Fasting drop from 200 to 85. Insulin is a life changer.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy Місяць тому

      T2 do use insulin sometimes But there’s steps on the pathway before that

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy Місяць тому

      The need for insulin in t2 usually means the diabetes has progressed Most people initially will get a good result with just a tablet or two But if they don’t treat the underlying cause of the diabetes - usually lifestyle but for some people it is due to people just getting older - which you can’t do much about, then diabetes will progress over time Insulin isn’t first choice treatment because although it’ll fix your glucose levels pretty much straight away, it makes you gain a bit of weight (which means it worsens the diabetes a little) and has no other medical benefits like cardiovascular or renal benefits - which most of the other meds have. Plus I think if you can get a good result with a tablet or an injection most people will take the tablet. There are a few people who are quick to insulin use in t2 and sometimes these people turn out to actually be slow burning type 1 diabetes (LADA) But sounds like the insulin has made a big difference to you Diet won’t effect your fasting baseline glucose level much tbh Which is why your diabetes healthcare team might be interested in what your fasting glucose is. It establishes a baseline which can then inform what kind of treatment might be effective Good luck with everything 🙏

      @@diabetesdietguy the steps are long and doctors allow you to live for years with high A1C levels like 10. I don't understand it. If you dropped the oatmeal, and any other carbs you have, you likely could get yourself into normal sugar range without insulin. Why take meds if you don't need to by modifying your diet.

    • @palerider7924

      @@snowwhite2709 age wears on beta cells and genes matter. I lived on protein for about 5 years always hungry. My body fat was 15%. When you can't eat a few grams carbs without a huge spike it's over it's just insulin time. It works you just be careful dose accordingly and limit sugar containing foods. I don't have to throw away hamburger buns now. Insulin is easy not something to fear or long to be off of. I had double quarter lb burger and chocolate cake with carb smart ice cream for dinner 77 grams of carbs dosed 8 units had a 112 blood sugar at 2 hrs. Love it. Not starving anymore.

A breakfast that can drop your carbs after your morning high is BBBE: Butter, Bacon, Beef, n Eggs. Try cooking one Bacon, 2 oz cubed Stk, one egg... sprinkled with a little Pepper Jack Cheese (0 carbs). You could eat more but I would get too full. And take a chelated multivitamen everyday with sugarless fluids that have electrolites, like Propell.

    I took some insulin for a meal, and my sugars were still going up an hour after so took a correction dose, then sugars were rapidly dropping, apparently I injected into some scar tissue were it sat dormant then started releasing shortly after. Lessons learned to ensure I changed injection sites

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy Місяць тому

      Hey John Yep that can happen But also remember rapid insulin takes about 1 hr before it starts really working. So you’ll unlikely see any or minimal effect of the insulin until at least an hour. Then the full action of rapid lasts 4 hrs ish. So best practice is to let the insulin dose do its thing and wait before topping up. Especially before the 3hr mark. You can always add more insulin at the next injection to bring it down

      Hi tattoo Thanks for the comment I’ll assume this was directed at me as it’s on my channel The videos - of which I’ve produced over 50 for free, are in my own time are free. So there’s plenty of free info here. In the Uk healthcare is also free and patients are welcome to use this But for those wanting an extra hand or to jump the queue then there is a private sector also. Most countries the healthcare is just private and needs to paid for. So we’re lucky here to have that option. So it’s the patients prerogative if they want to go private or wait a bit longer and have less time in the appointment for free or jump the queue and have more time dedicated to them. But ultimately if I’m seeing patients, this is work for me, so if someone wants a 1:1 appointment then that comes at a cost im afraid. But there is by no means any obligation to go private for anyone and I wouldn’t describe this style as a hard sell in way.

My gran is ill in hospital with her going into episodes (don’t understand what’s happening to her yet - she becomes unresponsive, blank stare (if eyes open), shout at her or shake and eyes may open periodically, she gets sweaty and clammy, she barley breathes, pale complexion, blue lips, has happened to her after eating and with not eating. It’s absolutely terrifying. Her diagnosis for years has been T2 diabetes yet she’s managed to control it until now. How long steroid induced diabetes last?

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 2 місяці тому

      If it’s truly steroid induced, things should settle down 2-3 days after the steroids stop. If they don’t, other things will be effecting it or the diabetes was there prior

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 19 днів тому

      A steroid shot wouldn’t normally cause a glucose problem truth be told It normally needs to be high dose oral or iv steroids Are you sure you weren’t getting these glucose levels prior to the steroids? Were you monitoring before? Why are you monitoring now? Was it specifically due to the medical teams request? As in reality the levels aren’t that high in the grand scheme of things. 220 is a bit above normal but not hugely. As a point of care finger prick result, diabetes isn’t diagnosed until a glucose of about 200. A steroid shot wouldn’t cause high glucose levels for months anyway. Hope that helps

Because my doctor is trying to say that I have diabetes when my aba1c test was 7.6 mmol/l, mind you i was very dehydrated and barely drink water and had a infection during my hba1c test. Can that effect my numbers? Plus my stress level was very high. Also, my rbc and wbc was high. I believe because of my infection. I am so confused. I live in canada.

      Hey Yes numbers in mmol/L But HbA1c is a different measure and measured in mmol/mol or as a percentage So it’s a bit confusing A blood sugar might be 7.6mmol/L But a HbA1c might be 7.6% (one measure) Which would be a HbA1c of about 60mmol/mol Which means ya sugars are probably running between 4-14 most of the time. Then of course we have the other measure for finger pricks in the US and mainland Europe which is mg/dL So it’s a mess really 🤦
