My 2 sons and I are novice RR modelers with an evolving 7 1/2' x 23' Point-to-Point layout with 2 upper levels. We are freelanced all in CN , CP with some foreign power and are learning as we go. As a family, we are avid Railfans and frequently drop all we are doing to see the next Train. We mainly Railfan in Southern Ontario but have started to expand to other locations. I am new to posting videos , so please drop a comment to let me know what you think.
GP 38 2 Decoder Overview Part #2
Welcome everybody to another Earl Widmeyer Video. In this video, I install 2 types of decoders to see if there is any difference in between them. I opted out of installing the decoder buddy as it wouldn't have shown me anything different. I will post new videos as I progress in the CN GP38-2 rebuild of #4713. Please like, subscribe and most of all leave a comment!

Welcome everybody to another Earl Widmeyer video. Here I continue with the body teardown of the GP38-2 Wide nose that I'll convert into CN #4713 Standard Cab. I'm coming to the realization that I will not be able to fully reproduce the prototype engine, due to my own limitations and pocket book! I hope viewers can understand that. The thumbnail is a low bridge in London Ontario and more picture...

Hey Earl, that is quite the project you got going on there 🤦♂️ I don't think I could do something like that at this moment in time 🤷♂️🤣 To many other projects to take care of plus the business 🤦♂️ Enjoying your progress though and I've seen the previous videos as well just haven't had the chance to comment on them. All in all I'm looking forward to watching your next video hopefully tonight. I'll pull it up on my Roku TV at bed time later. That bridge at the end of the video looks pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. Have a good night and stay safe. Happy modeling!! - Jason
Great job getting it all fixed up Earl 👍👍 That’s why we call Adam the wizard 🧙 he makes magic happen . Great video there keep it on the trackssss 😎🚂🫵TSM
Ya, he does some funky stuff that us🦖🦖🦕🦕🦖🦖 don't understand!!! On another note, you had commented to Railfan Man (Jason) that you hope to see him at Springfield show. I told Jason that Wade and Adam are going too. Can you get them together? Jason is looking forward to meeting them!..LOL Earl. I'll be up at the club on Sunday😀
@ you bet I’ll introduce them to some cool cats there
Nice share Earl all kinds of thing you can preform on these locomotives as we learn new things 👍😎🚂
Oh ya Happy New Years to you and your family enjoy 2025 running 😎🚂
Thanks for sharing Earl. I'm almost tempted to add resistance to my decoder buddy's. You can get them with custom resistors to suit your lighting preference. Cheers
Good idea on the plexiglass wall on the fascia there. I need to look into that myself. Where do you get your plexiglass?
Merry Christmas!! 🎄☃️
Earl nice video my Friend and a merry Christmas to you and family.😊😊👍👍
Thanks Frank, and Merry Christmas to you and family! I'll be posting part #2 shortly. I hope you were able to pick up a sound engine for X-mas🙏🙏🙏 Cheers 🍻 Earl 🦖
Super nice Video! BIG LIKE Merry Christmas 🌲🌲🌲
Thanks for the love Thomas!! You and yours have a Merry Christmas!! Earl 🦖
Wah mobil mainan kereta nya bagus banget nih kk
The hood (right side rear) and the snow shields of the GP38-2W and CN GP38-2 are different. Also, besides step wells, the air reservoirs are also different. You should spend some time to assess the differences beforehand. Good luck.
David, thanks for the insight. I struggle with the notion of this being a prototypical build. I'm a novice at best when it comes to the details and I probably don't even have the best platform for 4713. I'm just working with what I got on hand. I know it won't be right to others but in my minds eye it will pass. I still have time, no irreversible damage done yet and I'll dig a little bit more. I don't want it to turn into a laborious endeavor. Cheers 🍻 Earl 🦖
Nice share Earl 👍 Good luck with the project lots of parts to use up. You have a couple of guys to reach out to help any problems arise. Wade & Matt two good folks to get you there. Have a great day and Merry Christmas
Ya thanks Mike, my thoughts exactly. I do want to tackle this myself, but having guys like like you, Wade and Matt watching me🧐is a little intimidating!! 🦖
Lemme know what you're not using. Maybe i could do some work for spare parts?
Ya, I'm going to work with 4775 and hopefully leave 4789 alone. If all works well it will be a spare body and the chassis with the motor. I wouldn't mind doing a trade!!🤟 🦖
Before you tear that 2w apart, can you get a cannon cab for it? Might be better to make 4713 out of 4977, not the other way round.
what's a cannon cab? I thought about finding a nosed cab for the genesis engine, but I want to use what I got...maybe Earl
🤠👋🚂🗯
Yeah, I'm watching! Go for it Earl. All the parts you need can be found at TMR Distributing. Get yourself some 1.5mm Fibre optic to make new lenses when you move the headlight. Can also make a diffuser out of clear plexiglass if you only want to use one LED instead as of two.
Right on Matt!, Thanks for the advice. I think I have some fiber optic but it might be 3mm I have problems with the chassis too, I explain it part #2. Earl
OH, I looked up TMR- lots of stuff there. It's like a one-stop-shop eh! 🦖
Bless up brother i miss you at work but you're too busy at home
Only the wife makes me busy😂
Looking really nice brother 👌 👍
Thanks a lot Patroy 😂, love them trains😅
More realistic when it coast for a bit and not stopping right away. Great job Earl👍 Happy modelling cheers
Thanks Mike!, I got to adjust a few of them!!.. LOL Earl
🤠👋🚂🗯
Nice cat didn't know you're a cat guy
HUH,,, I guess I never mentioned it eh.. cat's all my life..lol. This one, he is a character alright!! Earl🦖
If it’s doable a swing out section would also be an option
Never thought of that but this is right in between the stairs. It's a bad spot altogether. After you comment I thought what if I split the bridge in 1/2 with a set of hinges but still not good. But thanks for the comment! Cheers! Earl
He was more crazy chasing me around with the bag before I gave it to him...LOL
Earl! Please tell me you didn't strip that black roof with the cracked texture!!!! That is tar and gravel roof GOLD! Work with it. It looks like the roofers did a terrible job on that roof and had to go back and try to fix it. I'd add some very fine gravel to the roof pre-washed with an 80% water 20% white glue mixture. Then, once dry, follow up with a dark grey mostly water solution along those cracks. Almost like its raining on the roof. Let the paint and water settle into those cracks. Maybe after that follow up with florescent green in some of the shaded areas around the front wall to represent constantly damp areas (moss). Great job getting that airbrush out of the box! Keep going.
OK, you sanded it.... please fill me in on exactly what you did to get that texture. I want to use it on my roofs!
Bottle half full- Bottle half empty. LOL Ya got to keep going for sure!
@@mattw9667 woah, woah woah ... slow down there partner!! I was just trying to get the building made!! Didn't; think it would be a weathering project! So when I went to paint these I used Tamiya white primer spray. I then did the grey airbrushing. the first airbrushing was a disaster! Spitting and blotchy. Wade told me it was my needle setting and to not stop for long as it mucks up the aperture. second layer or touch-ups went on great! I did get some overspray on the rooftops. when I went to airbrush the Flat Black, I only had enough for the 1 roof, so I used Rustoleum FB primer. I t was all I had. I think it reacted with the Tamiya primer , maybe also the airbrush paint. even after sanding it still orange peeled the second time. I won't ever use Rustoleum again, even if it says "bonds to plastic"!!! Did you watch my Smokey and bandit build #1 the Snowman KW? I used all Rustoleum and when I applied the clear it went to crap!! " Earl
Nice clean layout Earl. Love the ramp to the second level.
It is insane!! Besides that, Adam is so OCD on track laying, we'd argue for hours while doing it!!! LOL gota love the kids!
Lol cats are funny to watch after giving them some catnip 😅😅
Cats gone wild!! 🤷♂️😅😅 I remember having one of those toys for our cats back in the day
My arm is usually his scratching post / Velcro tool!!!. I have not heard this cat growl or hiss yet, all he does is purrs while fighting with me!! He loves aggression!!!
Nice update #3 like the lift out works well 👍 I never throw out wood either never know when that peace of wood comes in handy. Anyway you can save building a layout works wood paint and hardware. Enjoyed the video cya
Thanks Mike! some of those shelving's up above are laminated pine planks I saved from over 17 years!...LOL I don't hoard nothin, there a use for that!!! Cheers Buddy! Earl🦖
Looks great buddy! Glad you told me to look you up!
LOL Shawn!!😝 Better have subbed too!! Cheers🍻 Earl🦖
@@earlwidmeyer2654 I did don’t worry!😉
Found a new layout build to follow👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽…lots of switching opportunities…
Hey thanks for checking it out! I like the diversity of it too even if it's not laid out for good scenery. Mabey another layout, another time Eh? Cheers🍻 Earl🦖
Awesome layout Earl!! I can't wait to run long trains like that 🤷♂️😅🤘🤙😎
Ya it's coming along !! Earl
Hey Earl, Great part one layout tour!! Definitely lots going on and very strategic approach to how you did your inclines. I know you mentioned before some of the inclines are very steep and you need multiple units to bring the trains up, however you made it work. I'm hoping to check out part 2 either tonight or tomorrow. I also remember watching that show Dinosaurs 🦕 That was a funny show back in the day 🤷♂️😅 That makes sense now the nick name Earl 🤷♂️😅 Thanks for sharing and have a good night 🤘🤙😎 Happy modeling!! - Jason
Yep...I thought you'd like that. Guys at the club find it funny too. There is still a handful of guys at work that know the name and still call me by it. It screw with other worker cause they say"I thought his name was Corey?"...LOL. I shortened pt#2 realized 40 min of just looking at a layout is kinda boring. Pt#3 coming soon Cheers Jason 🍻 Earl 🦖
Earl i am working on a gaint oil and chemicals area at the moment i will do a video in the near future on it soon.👍👍
Oh that will be cool. I still am contemplating adding a lager oil facility at the west end!! I have Pt#3 still to come. Cheers! Earl
looking great Earl Thanks for the update my Friend.😊😊👍👍
Thanks Frank, I did a comment on your last video for the DCC sound engines, go read it!!! Earl
Hi! New here. A dream train set you have there. Was just watching a train video and saw that there was a lot of graffiti on the box cars. Would be cool to see a few of yours with graffiti. Regardless, your train city looks amazing!
I've just started to use an airbrush, like first time ever! I'll be doing some weathering trials and see how that goes, not ready for graffiti, but there are some cool decal sets that is for sure. Thanks for the comment!! Cheers🍻 Earl
Excellent layout tour lots of switching going on there. Very cool layout Earl 😎🚂🫵
Thanks Mike 😊. As I said in pt#1, we didn't plan properly for roads or space just lay track...We did the same thing on the first layout. LOL😂 Cheers 🍻 Earl
Nice 👍
appreciated!!!
It's self serving but I like it!!!LOL Earl
You did an awesome job my friend!! and nice editing in this video :)
Thanks, it will be fun to get the little details done and added!
Hey Earl, Very nice new addition to the roster!! Nice collection you have going on as well. I look forward to seeing this new locomotive run. Thanks for sharing. Have a good night and stay safe. Happy modeling!! - Jason
Thanks Jason!... LOL the wife said I couldn't buy it unless I paint the Livingroom. So I was accepting of the fact that I was never going to get it. But then a week later , Adam tells me he bought it because they were disappearing and knew I really wanted it. Now I have to paint the Livingroom!!! I'll have stretching her legs soon! Cheers 🍻 Earl
@earlwidmeyer2654 There's always a catch right🤷♂️😅 Well at least you have the locomotive in your possession and will be running it 🤘🤙😎 Also the deal was from what I understand that yes you have to paint the living room, however you didn't mention a timeline it had to be done🤔 So with that being said you at least have until it starts warning up as you don't want to paint in the cold weather as I would think you would want the house to air out thus in order to do that you need to have the windows opened in your house correct 🤔🤷♂️😅😅😅😅 Just a thought😅😅 Have a good day and stay safe. - Jason
@@jaybird111207 But the deadline was Christmas!!😆🤣😪
Nicely done Earl! They look great on the layout! 😊
Thanks Andrew!! We all are doing our part! Earl
I love it!!! Earl
Very nice... I'm halfway into building my own SATB set, Do you have a video on making the display case? I think it would look cool if there was a LED light on the inside of the case.
Hey Clayton, Just saw your comment and thanks!! Not too many commented on the case but it was very easy to make. Just have to have a couple simple tools, table saw, miter saw, sandpaper, glue, nails and paint. I used 3mm thick (1/8") plexiglass for the panels. it is the same thickness as most sawblades. both the top and bottom are the same. measure a piece of wood to size and put a 3mm deep cut around the perimeter. then cut trim pcs of wood to fit around the perimeter and nail in place. Voila- you have a groove for the plexiglass that is 3mm wide x 3mm deep. make 4 corner posts and run a grove on 2 sides adjacent to each other. there you have a 4 post display case and just cut the plexiglass to size on the table saw. Ya I thought of lighting it too but I didn't get that far. Cheers ! Earl
Good job bud😊
I'll pat myself on the back!!....LOL
HI Earl every think looks great 😊😊👍👍👍
Thanks a lot Frank!! I got a couple more vids to post. A long way away from scenery though!! LOL Cheers! Earl
Awesome running and railfanning Earl!! For the area you built your layout you've done a great job at designing it i think 🤘🤙😎 Love the Smails!! Thanks for sharing. I also subbed to your sons club channel. Im playing catch up with some videos trying to at least and get things done I need to 🤦♂️🤷♂️🤣 Have a good night and stay safe. Happy modeling!! - Jason
Thanks for the love Jason. I have a couple more vids to post, 1 will be more in-depth of our vision for the layout Cheers! Earl
@earlwidmeyer2654 nice and look forward to it!
Good job buddy looking really nice
Hey everybody! I got to say that 2801 sound way better in person. The video doesn't capture the depth of the sound that the prime move makes. On my next vid, I'll try to get closer so you can hear it better! I also used a stabilizing edit to not make the videos so shaky but it seems to blur the view as if you had a couple too many!! LOL In 1 part of the video , I didn't edit it that way and you can tell the difference! Cheers 🍻 Earl
Looks fantastic! Great job!
Earl awesome video my Friend Thanks for Sharing Keep up the Great work love watching.😊😊👍👍🎥🎥🎥🎞🎞🎞📽📽🎬🎬🎬📺📺📺📸📸📸📸
Hey Earl, Awesome catches you got there!! Looks like lots of action and a nice day for it as well. Nice pics of the rig aslo. I've seen some of those little pickup trucks around my area neat little buggers 🤷♂️😅 Tunnel train was cool to is that what they call it a viaduct I believe 🤔 Awesome all around!! Thanks for sharing. Have a good night and stay safe. Happy modeling!! - Jason
Thanks Jason,. It was was fun hanging out with my boys, doing some railfanning and picture taking! Earl
