Multigrafted Avocado tree going in east Fresno County Big Black,Gem.
Reed Avocado grown in Fresno County
Reed is great tree if it gets winter protection from cold decent size round fruit 1 to 1..5 pounds flowers late, needs over a year to mature on tree, fruit quality and taste prob at least in top 10 if not better.Theres a chance Cannonball could have sprang from a Reed seed, less alternate bearing than a Nabal , Reed can be a heavy producer. This Reed on Duke 7

Planting a Avocado Tree in 90 percent clay soil in Fresno county, Ca on raised row and drain feild.
Do you ever pinch young growth flush to stimulate flower budswell? I work at retail nursery and played around with it enough to see that it does work as per the recommendation of growers in Mexico and Colombia. Thanks for sharing I have a cousin who's been asking for an avocado tree in Hanford. I want to come in big with GEM on Zutano seedling rootstock in a 15 container. I see a a lot of trees that I poach and snipe the top performers on seedling rootstock clonal is hard to come by here in the 831 Northern Central Coast. Thanks for sharing ✌️🥑
I dont pinch off , Gem to me wants to flower too young, i would rather the tree get some size first, i,ll be watching Maluma over the next few years if it does well i will stop planting any more gems and focus on more Maluma as long as it takes cold well enough.
Well poop
Your mounds with good soil seem to be a success👍 I just pulled out of ground 2 Brokaw Clonal Reeds today here in Ventura,Co because of root rot from my heavy clay soil on north side of fence. Going to dig out a lot of the clay soil and replace with sand then try replanting again on higher mounds🤞
@@126AP Good deal mounds go a long way, avo can handle a little clay I find but not a high percent, I import better soil to place on top of my native clay.
@@126APcoarse sand is good also DG mixed in or even small pea gravel mixed with silt.idealy my mounds should be flatter wider up top to support mulch or compost better.
We love our Reeds from a 6 year old to two I just grafted last year we've five. As you said great fruit and beautiful tree.
@@frankyancy1347 yes great tree and fruit if I can keep warm enough in my area till at least they are a few years old
ever down in san diego? would love a scion or seedling?
@@omegaxshark21 I'm rarely down there , Scions are 70 each that includes shipping.
How old is this plant?
When vid taken it was in ground 2.5 years but it was older counting time in pot
Hey there Shane. You got a great thing going out in the valley. I've been keeping in touch of your progress with the various trees you got including cannonball and BB Johnson - very impressive I'd say. The next few years will provide you with a lot of progress in terms of fruit production. Hoping you will be profiling the fruit! Take care and Happy Holidays! -Jose from Gilroy
@@josehernandez9486 thanks, would love to hear about what trees are fruiting well for you and what rare avo types you have going on

Is brokaw nursery open to public to purchase Gem Avocados trees or any avocado tree.
@@AlexSaldana-lb5me Brokaw mostly known for a wholesale commercial nursery but they will sell with a 20 tree minium and trees have to have a deposit placed in advance

@@RareAvoTrees It went into shock after up potting it i also up potted ah Fuerte that also went it shock but looking a little better. Oh my Gem also on Zutano rootstock
Where did this avocado originate from? Do you have any good idea of the parentage? Where could I get a few scions?
@@ocneal From northern Cal , and yes scions are 70 ea
Parentage unknown , seedling tree from a planted seed my guess from a nimlioh, Nabal, Reed seed or something like thoughs .
Looking good! I agree with you climate growing conditions observations

Will you be mulching that whole area there? Looks like ac lot of time planning, but it’ll pay off. Love the mounds!
@@ocneal mulching will slid off the steep mounds but will try latter as trees age some and roots hit the flat native soil.
@@ocneal yes mounds are a must in my native clay, better than digging holes in clay and then improving soil in the hole sometimes that can cause a hidden underground pool of water a deathtrap.
Looking Good!
@@TropicalGardenGuy ya I'm excited to see if my imported top soil does a lot better than native soil, plus if clonal root stock grows any faster than seed rootstock
Is what you are calling this “new” cannonball a known variety with an accepted name ? Or is it a seedling from a known variety?
@@SVmathfarmer it's a fairly recent type, it's now been propagated aprrox 4 years by a few diff propagators and it's already known by several names.Even a few early names have mostly dropped by the wayside.I feel Cannonball suits it best, it's much larger than a Reed or Nabal,no one seems to know what the original seed planted was but a I suspect sometime like a Nimlioh though Cannonball never turns black when mature.
@@RareAvoTrees thanks for update. I was thinking Nimlioh which I grow along with Nabal and Reed but Nimlioh does not stay green as you know
@@SVmathfarmer yes I know, cannonball stays green and skin on cannon very hard and thick, shape is very round but slight hint of ridging on outside
Where did you get your cannonball avocado tree ???
That tree I grafted myself I sell scions but they are pricy since it's still very rare. Potted trees can be made up with a deposit.
Your setup looks good to me. I notice you have Brokaw tree's. Do you have a source for those or did you buy them directly from Brokaw? It is my understanding you have to place an order for 20 trees to do business with them. I'm just a hobby backyard gardener so I can't buy more than one or two at a time. Chris
I bought directly from Brokaw yes you are correct they like a min order of 20 and trees heading north over the grapevine need a 100 dollar fee bug treatment and ag inspection, I've heard of groups of buyers pick in together to hit the 20 tree mark but must buy under only 1 person's name.
Looks like the hot sun going to fry them young trees..??
Sept is better to plant than July but March is best to plant
Congrats getting then in the ground, looks like a great start with nice clonal. Keep us updated.
@@AvocadoTalk yes I will film in a year to show how fast or slow they grow but with new soil they should like it unless my mulch is too thin.
@@RareAvoTrees with the horse manure that you are using as mulch they should grow super fast. Is the cannon ball avocado something new or the bay giant?
I live about an hour from where you're located and I want a canon ball avocado tree !
Ok don't currently have complete trees but you can place a 80 dollar deposit and I can make one up, you can pay balance when tree is picked up
Thx for sharing your trees and method for such a HOT dry area. Here 20 miles east of San Diego we have ideal sandy loam and temperatures in the 90s, just sometimes over 100s. S0 are you going to sell the fruits or just a hobby ? I've 27 with 16 varities, just for fun, eating and giving away.
@@frankyancy1347 I will likely not have enough for a packing house to bother with but they will still be sold at farmers markets fruit stands and on internet, and true my weather is not ideal but my water is near free and little to no salt in it,my biggest expense has been bringing in sweet top soil and sand gravel but at least that expense is a one time deal.
@@frankyancy1347 I would add cannonball to your collection if you like a big round fruit.Mature time is very long but fruit runs 2 to 3 pounds each.
I've 4 Reeds! A Holiday, and a young Esther and Anaheim all with big fruits, but thx for the recommendation.
@@frankyancy1347 it sounds like you have a awesome collection of diff types, the more kinds the better to pick fruit ever day of the year
How old is the tree?
@@barbiefields6431 that tree roughly 2 years in ground but was grafted in a pot for another year or so, it's growing fairly fast but a month long stretch of heat over 105 did slow growth down it's just starting to pick up again for fall growth.
@@RareAvoTrees still did good! Leaves didn’t dry up to a crisp. My hass was in a pot and west part became crispy
@@barbiefields6431 ,, True leaves could have done worse with long stretch of heat wave, but they did grow smaller and slower , leaves are just now starting to recover and grow nice.
They sure are sensitive to our 105f plus temps, but i grafted mine into the center of my multi grafted tree so that it’s somewhat protected by mex grande that can take a little more sun and cold.

Great production I have a gem on Dusa in placer county, and Reed on duke.
I remember living in Fresno and summer temps in the low 100s were commonplace, but 114 sounds more like Palm Springs style temperatures!
Yes not normal for Fresno county a day or few for 105 or higher the trees can handle it ,but a long stretch 105 to 109 I can tell does stress avocado trees, this heat wave lasting 3 to 4 weeks finally getting a break on July 27th.
