Hot Vs Cold Process Soap Making: Understanding The Key Differences
Made it and it's awesome! thank you for such an easy recipe
You are most welcome. It is a very basic recipe that you can play around with different oils and butters, glad you like your first batch 😀🌷
Thank you so much for sharing, just found your channel. Excellent information on stearic acid👌🏻. I have a question on essential oils, just need to land on a %, what are the ratios (%) to use in cold process soap? Thank you for your prompt response in advance 😊
It is all my pleasure. Every essential oil has a different usage rate. You can find most on the www.eocalc.com Lovely calculator where you choose your blend of essential oils, enter your batch size and what type of product and it will calculate the safe usage rate for you.🌿
Ek geniet jou channel vreeslik!
Hello Ansa 👋🏽 I tried making this however the powders do not amount to as much as you have in your bowl. And the dish soap made the powder into a paste. Are the measurements you showed in the video the same as what you were mixing? I followed everything as explained 🤔 Thank you again, be well 😊
Hello there. I doubled or trippled the recipe when I made it so it will look more. Apologies if it seemed misleading, although I did say that I'm gonna make a larger batch and give the measurements for a 100gram batch 😉 The reason I give 100g recipes is because it directly translate to % for those who like to work with a formulation instead of a recipe. If your dish soap make the mix too wet it could be that I'm maybe using one that are a bit thicker (less liquid more thickeners) than yours, just start with only half the dish soap, mix and see what the texture looks like, if it holds everything together you are good to go, if stil too dry add little by little until you get the perfect amount, it's basically just the glue in the recipe. Make notes as you go to have a record for the next batch. 🌿
Oh ok I understand now! I apologise I must have missed what you said at the beginning of the video. Thank you!
So happy I've found you !!!!
Welcome Adam. Glad to have you 🌿
For beef tallow how much cetyl alcohol would you add to this recipe?
2%-3% is a good place to start for a nice skin feel, Cetyl Alcohol also thicken lotions, so just keep that in mind. Here is a calculator in my fb files that will help you with the formulations. facebook.com/share/p/6esZ4JXZRYy9fU6H/

May I ask what the percentages are so I can calculate a large batch like 1,814g or 64oz
Hi there. I make 100gram batches meaning 1gram will be 1%
Very interesting thank you. I have a question conceni'g hot process and cold process. Which on IS the harder and wich one last longer?
Hi there. Both processes ends up the same, I prefer cold process because I can use less water, meaning it will be harder faster. Here is a video as well where I discuss the two methods. ua-cam.com/video/hnrgFqE96G4/v-deo.html

Very interesting 😊.
Definitely unusual 😄
I'm thinking if you can mount that corner card on a sturdy stand, you can just slide the soap through like a cutter.
Hi Rachel. You can definitely do that, after 20 soaps your hand can start to cramp up holding onto something so thin. I just like to throw the card in the soap scrapes tub after use... less stuff to put away, and I know where to find it :)
Lol, ek het nou so lekker gelag. Mense met blik kele, kry n termostaat, jou seep gaan n vulkaan veroorsaak. Lol. Nog nooit koffiedrink gewoontes as n suksesfaktor in seep raakgesien nie. Lol
Wow! What a wonderfully thorough review of the 2nd edition of my book. Thank you for really digging into the content. The first edition came out in 2003, the second - the one you have - in 2007, and the third edition came out in 2013. In the 11 years since, my soapmaking practice has shifted and changed, and when we were going to do a fourth edition, I decided that since there are so many wonderful soapmaking books now, there was no need for another edition of mine. Anyway - I'm so glad you "get" my work and made this video. xxoo :) Alicia
Hi Alicia. Oh, what an honor to get a "review" of my review video of your book. I'm glad you feel I did it justice 😄 It's still the favorite on my shelf, I think you've covered everything a beginner need and more, the second edition was already great. Thank you for your time knowledge that you shared and for your message, I appreciate it. xoxo
Baie interested

Hi Ansa, sue from Australia .I have another question about using the calculator is it only to be used twice if you don't have a paid membership they seem to only have 2 recipes for people to use that don't pay a membership ? 😊I accidentally pressed my recipe twice 😢
Hi Sue. The free version only alows you to save one or two recipes online but you can use it as many times as you want. Here is a way how to save your formulated recipes offline on your computer, a good habit even if you have a paid membership. ua-cam.com/video/ZJpD7_bx-hA/v-deo.html
Love please write Down Recipe also in video
Hi Nadia. I used 90% Tallow, 10% Coconut oil. (For laundry soap like in this video 1% superfat, you can use this as bathing soap as well, then I increase the superfat to 5%) the duel lye is 90% NaOH and 10% KOH. 🌿⚘
That was a great help thankyou from Australia 😊
You are most welcome Sue, thank you for your support all the way from Australia 🤗 It is so nice to hear where you all are from 😎

@@saponify6677 I have a daughter that only uses beef tallo on her skin, so with getting ready for my first market of the season here , making emulsified body butters is a must and I live in a farming community so my hopes that it is big this year. It’s my first year selling my soaps and lotions.

Emulsifying wax, you can get it in most countries, but what kind of shop?

@@saponify6677 Thank you very much
Thanks for sharing these valuable content. I’ve been some of your videos and I found them very informative ❤. Here you a new subscriber from England.
Thank you for your support and kind feedback ❤
In the States, we call the fat around the organs of a cow "leaf tallow". It is generally whiter with no beefy smell.
In Afrikaans we call it niervet "kidney fat", it does render less smelly, I think its because there is less blood and beefy bits that can turn into crackling. The colour depends a lot on the animals diet and age. Before I discovered Maureen I bought fat from different sources and even though it was all organ fat the colour varied from pure white to light butter yellow but are always hard, the suet fat is much softer (squishy) and almost liquid at room temperature, and very prone to Saterday BBQ fragrance
Love this! Your fragrance vocabulary is actually quite impressive 😂
Thanks 😅 I thought it was "Very vague" 😂
I wish there was someplace in the United States to get nice pure, rendered sheep tallow like you are using
Maureen's Tallow is a true blessing, I used to render my own beef Tallow but this is a great time saver and a great product. I bought from other suppliers before that smelled terrible.
Your thumbnail pictures are adorable!
Thank you so much. They sometimes takes just as long as making and editing the videos 😁🌿
Thank you dear. Does castor make it softer or last longer? Also we have canola and sunflower blends easily available and much more affordable. How is this blend gor soap making
Castor oil is great for a nice creamy lather but being a unsaturated oil it will not contribute to hardness or longevity at all, if you use more than 10% castor oil in a formulation it can start to negatively effect your soap in the sense that it becomes leathery and sticky before you get to the point that it really softens your soap. Canola and sunflower oils are lovely oils to soap with but they are also high in unsaturated fatty acids (Linoleic and Linolenic) and in high concentrations can cause rancidity (DOS - Dreaded orange spots) Between the two I would rather use some Canola than Sunflower, both will result in a softer soap. For longevity you need to use something high in stearic acid or palmitic acid like, palm oil, shea butter, tallow or isolated stearic acid or soy wax in small quantities 10%
I love how you share information & I find it very interesting. Im a hobby soaper for my own needs.
Glad you find it interesting, I don't mind sharing information that could help someone else. Life is way too short to make all the mistakes ourselves😄
Cool! I'd be keen to see a dual base shaving soap comparison between the three also. Maybe after this one to see if the properties in test 1 carries through?
Great suggestion Jaco! Will see where I can fit it in.

The silicone plate for easy double boil is the most genius tip ive seen in awhile!
Thank you so much, it does make things more stress free.
Hi. Thank you so much for this video. I'm myself on the lookout for a good hand blender. Did the weight of the blender turn out to be an issue after using for 2 weeks or more? And the noise level? Thanks for your feedback.
Overall my only " dislike " is still the schlep to clean under the 4 blades after soapmaking. It's noisy in the level of stick blender noisy but nothing excessive, the speed controll is a nice feature and I found that I blend most on the lowest speed. It stood up under some heavy batches without a problem, and I chopped quite a bit of herbs for oil infusions with the chopper unit. All in all it's performing well so far.
Thank you for the quick reply back😊. Got it today and already put it to use. Very satisfied with it. Grateful for your video. Baie dankie!
I hope it serves you well for many years.
I cant believe you have a website and have never told us 😅
I tend do divide my life into compartments apparently. Even with Life coaching, I'm either a life coach or a friend but chances that I'm gonna coach you or even just listen for limiting beliefs over a cup of tea propably never gonna happen. For some reason it never occurred to me that youtube and HerbOil could overlap 😄 or that people who want to lean how to make their own products would be interested in what I sell. 🤷
Ansa, I think I know about herbs growing in SA but never plantain. Is it regarded as a weed here?
There are so many herbs seen as weeds, but I don't think it's declared as invasive. I grow my own Broad leaf Plantain (Plantago Major) but I do know the Plantago Lanceolata (narrow leaf plantain) grows in abundance wild along the west coast, Dannabay, Mosselbay, Kleinbrak all the way inland to George, and I've found some on the sidewalks in Pretoria/Centurion and Pietersburg as well.
You HAVE been away for a long while!
Way too long 😄
Beef tallow being cheaper than lard is very interesting
I think it's because they can use the pork fat in sausages but the beef organ fat is yucky to eat and propably gets discarded if not sold.
Metric unit is the best
I agree, although for some reason I prefer working in inches when sewing, maybe because it's printed larger and I can read the measuring tape without my glasses 😄.
