Casio PB-410 Pocket Computer, vintage retro computing
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Well, yet another pocket computer. This time from Casio, a close relative to the Tandy PC-8/Casio PB-100. We look under the lid, remove some dirt and leakage, and run a basic performace test on it. Its a relative to Casio FX-4000p as I had when I was younger. Background music from Epidemic Sound, licensed ofcause.
Tauon PC-1 - Android "retro-pc" = 1% good, 99% useless..
Переглядів 4,1 тис.3 роки тому
Did the epic mistake of buying a Tauon PC-1 a while ago. Its a total disaster, the user interface is not adapted for "Keyboard & Mouse". The build quality is Zx81-ish and not very nicely done, its a long way to the Spectrum Next they relate to in the advertising. 🥴 So anyone who wants a "retro pc" stay away from this piece of junk, its useless for that. Actually, if you do want THIS one, write ...

A quick look at the Texas Instruments TI-74 Basicalc Pocket Computer from 1985. Includes a benchmark, a look at the chips and a quick tour of it. These had some market success in Germany for sales reps for insurance companies. Its kinda compareable in size to the Sharp PC-1500 but faster and was at the time cheaper, but definately cost reduced in details. It succeeded the CC40 (Compact Computer...

Vintage PC-50x Video Game System from the 1970'ths

This is a brief introduction to a future video about the Mark video game that I recently bought, this is the same as I had as a kid, and I'll try to get it running and show some of the games I played some 40 years ago. Technology was primitive in these, they are today known as PC-50x based systems, and they where plentyful in the mail order industry back then. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC-50x_Famil...
Three types of eBay/online sellers to watch out for! Dont be fouled and save your money!

Based on my 12 years of experience of eBay I try to identify three types of sellers to avoid to save money. This is a follow up on my "iffy AliExpress seller" video I posted a week ago. This was filmed with a Panasonic Lumix GX800 micro four thirds with a kit lens. And music is from Epidemic Sounds, editing is done with the simple HD Movie Maker Pro. I yet have to try out its more advanced 4k m...

High capacity DIY 14g/h ozone generator
Have you measured to confirm the amount of ozone its producing? Im looking at those plates myself but i basically see 100 $20 clones of the same thing claiming 10g/hr all while seeing other commercial ones costing $200 claiming 5g.
Do u still have it
@@chonggogaming5182 some are still in use
it's typically the wires that break as they has found the most stiff wires in the entire China and used for those flaps for charging. Got two 790's as faulty/free last week and both had all wires damaged. One even had a corroded connector for the sensors which i replaced and their both as new now.
By chance, do you know how to adjust the contrast on the 74? Thanks in advance
There is a contrast wheel on the right hand side.
@@MrWaalkmanyes! Indeed, I found it, I also found it in some version of the user manual.
@@adumont Cool! I didn't have one of mine handy, so I had to look it up myself. :)
I used one in the 80s, I still have it. Must dust it off and have a play. Nothing but good memories of this machine.
Does have keyboard light
I saw this on eBay brand new. I came to UA-cam like always to watch videos on this to see if it's good or not. I came across this video I'm glad I found this video now I know not to buy it. Looks like there's a Tauson OS img that can be downloaded and maybe it can be installed on a raspberry pi.
It should of had Debian put on it, not Android.
Reminds me of my idea of slapping a low end mobile phone SOC from Mediatek onto a miniATX board, putting some UEFI layer over uboot, adding stuff like PCI-E, sata, and legacy ports (IT MUST HAVE A PARALLEL PORT!), and calling it a day. Basically a prepaid android smartphone from Dollar General shoe horned into a desktop pc and running Debian instead of android. Silly? Yeah. But hey, unlike most stuff like this, it would atleast had some expansion (No ram upgrades though, phone SOC's use combined NAND/SDRAM, so might as well max it out) and designed as some weird development platform/workstation (I, guess?).
All Sharp PC1500 and PC1500A as well as Tandy PC2 pocket computers need to have the rotting compression strip removed as it will cause damage to the circuit board. The one in this video shows the beginning of the decay which appears as balls within the strip at 3:17 and 3:27 (bottom left of screen) next to the display chips.
Nice overview of the device, however, the background music is nerve wrecking.
So is there 2 memory slots ? So I can just buy another 8gb stick to make it 16gb ram
Center negative. That's good information.
i though it was only my phone like that
I bought this calculator but it doesn't work, could it have the same problem you looked at in the video? It seems new but over the years it could have undergone an oxidation process? Thank you
Very well explained. Worked perfectly on our 2006 A4 Cabriolet. Be warned there is very little spare wire on the female connector. Also, the 10 mm splined socket we used was too tall to get the back seat screws when on the ratchet. We ended up putting the socket in the screw and turning it with a wrench. FYI, the dealer had quoted $1,700 to fix the issue. This really saved the day (and dollars).
To reset the airbag light after you fix the wiring can it be any OBD scanner or has to be a specific one
Hi, can you recommend an alternative that doesn't include building one or retropie? Thanks!
Apparently not!
i think your review is a bit unfair - it is a pretty good general purpose computer if you compare it to the target market - if I had that in 1980s, Id be over the moon. You don't need to use the emulation if you don't want, and of course it is a bonus the emulations are there. Also it is very very cheap. Is there anything else on the market which has the following: 80s wedge computer design, hi resolution graphics, stereo 16bit audio, internet access, the price - even a new Amstrad CPC (my favourite computer) clone costs 4 times that price which cannot do as much from a hardware specs point of view, an Amiga 500 (my second favourite computer) with Vampire (the closest thing I can think of in the Amiga World to that) also costs 10 times that price to meet almost similar hardware spec-wise. In my view, TAUON PC-1 should have as an option, a native BASIC interpreter as an option that boots in a second or two and provides commands to make use of all onboard hardware in an easy to use way - I think the hardware for the price is good, just there is a mismatch in what they expect you to use for software for the hardware.
i bought this as a speccy/c64 emu. i love the all-in-one retro feel computer. it's ok for the price, just saves me running emu's on my main machine, i just leave this setup with another monitor. it's cheap but it does what i want it to and for the price i can't complain too much.
How much is that kind of battery in terms of power?'
Muratas usualy have high discharge rate, they could be 35amps...not sure about these ones, though
@@ethrrr Yeah actually I found it to be something in that range.
Yes
Very nice and clear video. Thank you!
mutch nicer to exange the cigarette lighter insteded ;)

What will be the cost of all this stuff
Thanks for taking the time for making this review. I have been seeing this on eBay a lot. ZX Spectrum Next references was intriguing too. Now that I've seen what it was and that's the end of it.
Thank you!
I tried your solution. But it didnt fix the problem. It says this 01222 Active/Static Side airbag crash sensor, passenger side - G180 - open circuit I removed the clip under the chair. The yellow clip. From the floor Black seat to blue floor Blue seat to White floor These colours were in this clip. The brown i didnt connect, its just hanging there. But it Will not reset U got an clue whats wrong ? When i watched live data from my computer who was plugged in i could see there was " too high " problems on driver seat also. But didnt get it as an error on the computer. Help please Cheers
A real POCKET COMPUTER, not as most Casio models. Even better: this uses standard AA batteries instead of button batteries, and it has a complete graphic dot=matrix display, i.e. you can draw continue graphics (for example a big bar), while on other modes there is only character graphics broken from character to character (for example you can't create a continuous line from 1st character to last screen character).
Really this Casio is not a pocket COMPUTER, it is a limited programmable calculator because you can use only its very limited BASIC environment and you can't escape from there. Sharp PC-1500, PC-1250, etc, etc are REAL pocket COMPUTERS because you can escape from BASIC environment (for example using POKE and CALL commands from BASIC) and you can access computer under BASIC, i.e. you can program CPU, run assembler or machine code programs, you can do what you want, only limited by hardware, while on most Casio models you can't, you can do only what its very limited BASIC environment lets you do. That is the difference between a real pocket computer (you can do what you want, only limited by hard) and a programmable calculator (where you can do only limited things in a limited environment you can't escape from). It is not about size/RAM/CPU power, but about limiting what you can do with that hardware. There is the opposite side: I have HP-48 calculators, and theses are real pocket computers (you can access all hardware, run machine code programs, etc). They are marketed as advanced scientific-graphic calculator (and they include advanced soft for math), but they are real computers, contrary to a lot of Casio calculators sold as pocket computers. For Casio it is even worse: it had some models in the Casio fx-770p family with assembler inside, but it was a assembler for a very simple and simulated CPU for learning. It was even more limited than BASIC environment :) I remember when I was teenager and I saw that Casio fx-770p, and I was thinking it had assembler to access real CPU/hard... PD: My 1st scientific and programmable calculator was a Casio (with a very limited program model). Much later I had a Casio PB-1000 (with real assembler/machine code). It was a real computer.
Worth less video. No talking...terrible music. Can't see what he is doing with what wires. Waste of time very frustrating.
If you didn't understand nothing I recommend you stop driving as definitely you are a danger for the rest of the road users
The problem with this is that it's nothing more than RPi 400 can do. Even a 10 years old laptop you have at home will be more convenient and it has a display built in, so you won't have cable mess on your desktop. Configuring emulators by yourself isn't much more sophisticated than using an 8-bit computer with all the Basic commands. For example FBZX and Vice basically work with default settings pretty well.
passat
Where do you get new pens for these things? I have a PC2 with the printer cradle, and all the pens are dried out.
Have you searched on ebay? I would try office ink, for old reservour pens.
@K Johansson First of all, I would like to thank you for your review. But could you explain please, what claims do you feel it fails to reach? I claim that this is an excellent educational computer for kids - and it does precisely this. My 5-year-old son operates the mouse and keyboard like a pro. I claim that you can emulate 8-bit and some 16-bit systems on this computer, and it runs MOST of the 8-bit systems out of the box. With the latest firmware, you can even run PS1 games without frame skipping. Good luck to make the same use of Raspberry PI 400 without a good Linux experience. I bet you even didn't go through the manual deep enough to see how actually "Keyboard & Mouse" was adapted. For example, you can use the mouse middle button or keyboard key as the Android "Back" button. Right mouse button functionality was also implemented (which is missing in original Android).
@tauon Electronics - your claims are yours to make. I still feel its grasping for more than it is. Make your own step-by-step demonstration videos on how to properly configure and set up the mouse and keyboard then, rather than sarcastically question those of us who have actually spent money on them and tried!
@@KJohansson Thanks for your reply. Mouse and keyboard come well preconfigured, as they were since the beginning. Not all android software, however, is intended to work with them - and in this case I can't do too much about it. In newest versions of the firmware small tutorial appears explaining basic principles, including shortcuts and keyboard functions. It is a project in development and being literally made by one person there will be always areas to improve. That's why time was spent on writing user's guide covering most unusual aspects of the computer.
Also there is forum where community is trying to resolve problems that arise and is discussing mods and updates. On site there is contact email for those who don't want to register on forum but have questions and I'm trying to answer all of them.
Hi, thank you for video, I am getting Error 22, when i type Cload, how to reset memory?
What spray do you use?
Just brake parts cleaner, sort of Bräkleen or similar. Effective and leaves no residue. Can be aggressive on plastic so dont leave it on for a longer time.
Cheers, thanks for the reply. Great vid 👍🏻
Reminds me of my experiences with an early cheap Android tablet back around 2010 or so. This could have been so good but the execution was so poor.
Got a Machspeed Trio "Stealth" 9 at a flea market YEARS after it's original owners stopped using it. It was a genuinely nice tablet! Until the NAND flash died... Perhaps one day I can flash the firmware back onto it.
Nice video! I have its sibling, the TI-95, which I still use and love very much. Check out my review and exciting new peripheral on my channel :) I also have a Sharp EL-5500III (PC-1403). Very cool.
I bought several of these also from same place. Very good seller. Havent dismantled them yet , Thanks for the video.
Hi, where did you buy it for 28€ ?!? Common price is over 100€ !
On Tradera.se its a Swedish subsidary of eBay. 👌👍
I was thinking of buying one but not now, thanks for the honest review, you have saved me a lot of grief.
It could have been good, but the basic android os limitations as a desktop system is too large.
Are there any resources for the assembler abilities?
Thanks for the video: I used a TI-74 from the mid 80's to the late 90's. I still have it. It was a great machine to program in.
Is there anyway to open laptop without the tool without scratching it
Try plastic tools, sort used to remove car intriour trim.
This disassembly looks depressing 😄In my 10+ yo Asus You have lika a lid for each component and it's so much faster, especially with the battery 🤦♂Still, components seems really nice, so it's probably my new laptop too.
Can I upgrade my processor in this model? Mine has an AMD A4-9125 RADEON R3
No, its to integrated.
I've just seen one in ebay, thanks for saving me the surprise.
Glad I could help
