    This man doesn't understand the concept of different regions around the world having different languages more and less in demand! Where I'm from, if you learn PHP for the backend, you're basically getting the short end of the stick... Less jobs and less money for the existing jobs

    • @devmentordave
      @devmentordave 17 днів тому

      That's a pretty bold statement. I wouldn't say I don't understand the concept since I literally call out that concept and caveat in other videos and often in livestreams when I share my opinion or observations. I do understand that reality, but that wasn't the point of the video. The point was that there are other opportunities besides the path most people are being encouraged to learn through bootcamps and online tutorials. So, no, it's not that PHP has the best earning potential, but in a crowded marketplace, having something else to fall back to may be a good option for some. Can't please everyone or even cover every option in a short video. Sorry to disappoint. Good luck on your journey!

    I stopped at 1:03:50 to write a comment. In boot camps you can find a task when you have to create a pixel perfect page from a screenshot, then to make it size responsive as the original, than to create popups etc, then to generate the whole page with js, so you actually have virtual version of the page - as all elements are created on the fly and have been assigned to variables. After that you start implementing forms, requests to backend. The main thing is you have requirements how it should be done, someone reviews your work (maybe students) and you learn everything by yourself. I believe it is the best way to learn. Not easy, but powerful

    • @devmentordave
      @devmentordave 2 місяці тому

      Any practice that makes you think and solve a problem is good practice, even if I hate the idea of being pixel perfect!

    Is it ok to follow the agreement that employee and employer have? In Russia for example you usually have to sign a contract that says you should tell an employer about your leaving company 2 weeks for advance. The same with employers, they can’t fire you without notice or compensation if not notified (they can if you don’t follow the contract).

    • @devmentordave

    php is absolutely not easy to learn. it used to be but not anymore. its been built on so much that it's now super convoluted. too much to learn now just to get it to do the same thing as modern languages, especially in terms of security. Golang will save you so much time. PHP is great for getting a job (the more it sucks, the greater the demand), but it's a big waste of time when it comes to actual development.

    • @JoelPeltonen
      @JoelPeltonen 2 місяці тому

      Hmmh. Above all, getting a job is much more important than writing a good language for most developers. I could be a rust god but if I can't pay rent and buy food that's worthless. I also disagree; PHP is still fairly easy to learn. You don't really need to know types properly to build simple PHP apps for example; optional type declarations, implicit type conversions and loose/dynamic types. PHP also doesn't need a compiler. You need to learn more if you use Go to build basic apps than you do with PHP. Also, wasting time is a tricky thing to measure. It really depends. Go binaries might run lots faster, but they might be more complex to build and in many, MANY cases developer cost and time is far more important than performance. In my 10 year dev career, I have built literally nothing that requires actual performance. SO MANY programs don't need performance. My daily PDM-to-elsticsearch importer or XML-to-CVS converter just needs to work, nobody cares if it runs in 10 seconds or 3 hours. Delivering has been FAR more important than shaving milliseconds.

    • @devmentordave
      @devmentordave 2 місяці тому

      Well, I mean, we develop new applications in it all the time, so, I would argue it works pretty well. Honestly, it works a lot better than every node.js app I've ever had to work with.

      @@devmentordave I completely understand your desire to target a certain niche. And I do agree with your points from the video. However shape of it seems a bit ironic because in code, as far as I know, best practices are aimed to ultimately save time - either it is user's, stakeholder's or dev's time. So it's interesting that in video-making you've chose the opposite strategy instead of taking an opportunity to apply existing skill and run some optimization (loss-less of-course). Anyways it is nice to hear new voices uplifting newcomers, so I hope you'll find your people!

    • @devmentordave
      @devmentordave 5 місяців тому

      @@cloynelson2974 There is a difference in the process of writing code, specifically for a production product as you mentioned, and in learning how and why to write that code. Learning should be done in the most advantageous way for the learner to not just have facts, but understand why something is good or bad, desirable or undesirable. You can't conflate work with learning, they are two separate avenues of the journey. One depends on the other, but is not the same as the other. Learning always requires more time and the better you learn, not just the what, but the why, the faster you will make the right decisions in your work. So, taking time to provide examples or explain something in more detail ultimately achieves exactly what you want... informed, quick, decisive code writing.

    • @devmentordave

      @@tsunekakou1275 I think we have to be careful about assigning motives simply based on our perceptions. The purpose of youtube is to reach a broad audience with whatever it is you are doing. So, setting up your content in a way that is attractive to your target audience takes time and experimentation. Not all of them are ringers. However, to say that one shouldn't seek views to build that audience to fulfill their other goals is misguided as well. My goal isn't views. My goal is to help a certain demographic with the information I want to communicate. If no-one sees that content it's not helping anyone and is ultimately a waste of my time. Just putting up videos doesn't guarantee anyone will see it. It takes a concerted effort to attract the audience you want to interact with. You may not be that audience, and that's fine. However, I think assuming that I'm only in it for the views simply because I try different well-known and used approaches is short-sighted. Of course, you're welcome to your opinion, but I would look at a lot of my other videos and compare them. I think you'll see that I'm learning and growing too. I'm trying to find the best use of my limited time to reach the most people with what I hope is helpful information. It's not flashy, but at least, hopefully, it's genuine.

      I would have to do some research but I assume that most billionaires don’t run their companies. Usually boards run the companies. So they probably are not in the weeds of operations. They also are probably more worried about their own increase of wealth than they are the betterment of others or even the betterment of their industry… at least in terms of the people. Sure they spend a lot of money on tech advances but not necessarily in the future of the labor force. It just isn’t their passion like it is for those of us with no way to fund what we think could benefit the industry the most both now and in the future. That’s why the tax incentive is unfortunately probably the best way to raise funds from them since they obviously are not concerned about the need on their own. Just look at what they spend their money on including charitable funds and you will find where their focus lies.

      So, the idea is that it doesn't have to be a paid freelance project that has high expectations. The point is to do your learning and practicing with the goal of meeting someone else's needs. That's what freelancing is. Doing a project for someone else. It can be pro-bono while you are learning. You probably can't do this out of the gate, but once you feel comfortable with your own projects you should branch out so you can use the freelance hack. :)

    That's how I would handle routes. Let the language do it instead of some package library from a famous framework like react or sveltekit. P.S. I didn't know php was a language that could handle system calls.

      @devmentordave 6 місяців тому

      Well it's actually the Laravel framework handling the routing, not PHP natively.

    This is an amazing concept! It could be set up as a non-profit long term bootcamp to expand the world of programming and development to those unable to afford traditional education and don't have time due to family or multiple jobs or other situations outside of their control preventing them from being able to get into the field. The non-profit could sell their services to build applications for businesses as there would be a number of devs that could be assigned to each project that comes in. That way they're also gaining real world experience while the non-profit is able to grow with a stream of income along with donations from billionaires, various tech enthusiasts, and/or alumni would graduated or left early but want to give back to the project that got them off their feet. An incentive then too for Jr. Devs going through this program would be that if they stayed through the full program, as the project grows, they could be selected as a Sr. Dev with the mindset of elevating minds from within instead of looking outside the project's resources to hire sr. devs. P.S. I'd love to be a jr. dev in this program if it was real 😅

      I think many Jr. Devs would join a program like this if they could. The key is getting buy-in from whoever we can to support it. It would be great to get to a point where it could sustain itself through projects, but not sure if that's viable.

    I have a business concept: creating websites for cities, counties, states, and federal agencies. This approach could provide a substantial customer base and might be ideal for implementing an apprenticeship/journeyman hiring model as well.

      Yeah, the key is funding. I've actually worked with some an while there is a lot of opportunities for clients, many/most are not in a position to actually pay well enough to do what needs to be done from a pay scale. But I like where your mind is. Maybe in the coming years we can get something started.
