    This is a fantastic bit of information, thank you for the detail but also keeping it to the point! We just moved and have noticed carpenter ants in our kitchen and i'm going to use you approach to hopefully eradicate them. It's rained and i'm hoping that it's because of that, that we have the ants coming inside the house now. Again, much thanks and awesome job on the video!

    So happy to see your video during my searching for the solution to kill the carpenter ant . It cost me$ 400 to do the spray by a company. But the ant come right back after 10 days. I see ant at my front yard . May be the nest is out there. Yet now come into my house . I will try the product that you recommended. Hope it helps.

    Wow, such an earnest report of your journey to help so many others like me! Please thank your family for me too, since a part of your contribution for sure! I’ve tried a few of these products but plan to get the bait granules you mentioned to see if that helps my PNW colony of carpenter ants. They sure are tough little buggers! Thought I squished one in TP and left in the toilet, soon enough it chewed through the tp and was swimming to get out. Just one example of the strength of wild creatures. A love / hate and respect thing for sure…. Been several weeks of trying, I think my wife and fam think I’m nuts! Still need the ones in my home all dead though so I’ll give it a go. Thanks again DIY friend!

    I found a nest in some foam insulation in the underside of my roof. So I cleaned everything good and didnt see any more ants since last year. I just had the roof deck sprayed with closed cell foam and then I heard some noise coming from the same location again. Sucks because I can hear them chewing up the new insulation but I cant see anything as they are between the 4” thick foam and the roof.. so I cant see them and I cant get to them. Hope these products help since they should have to come out for food/water

    So what I'm thinking is that carpenter ants go for protein rather than sugar like the smaller ants. I had two kinds of ants, smaller ones and the carpenter ones. The Terro ant bait got rid of the smaller ones but the carpenter ants ignored it (except for the few that tried to walk through it and drowned!). Now I'll try the ones that worked for you on my carpenter ants.

    I spray with Taurus SC. They are in our foundation somewhere and also have a satellite nest outside somewhere usually. I spray every 2=4 month's. Have been battling them since 2018. I rarely ever see them alive and never dead. I knew we had them when scouts where al! Threw out basement, the ones with wings. This summer there were only 3. If you kill the queen, they can make another one. Keep on rhem.

    As a pest controller, I can give you a few tips for a better product. 1 do not buy premixed chemicals as you are paying for 99% water. Buy a concentrate, it costs a tad more but goes way way further in the end. What we use for ants, and termites is a chemical called Fiprinol. It has no odor, acts like a bait system, and is in liquid form and the pass it on to the colony ( Covid for ants) . So do complete perimeter barriers and if possible to as wide as you can perimeter. Look for a nest and treat sparingly and follow the label, do not overdose as it's a very effective product.

    Carpenter ants especially forage at night. If you have an infestation, walk the perimeter of your house at night and find where they are going down to the ground and put your bait in several locations there. In my case they were coming/going from the bottom edge of my gable end siding, across the brick of the house, and down to the ground mostly at the corner of the house. So I put several soda bottle caps of bait out for them. Refresh after a rain as another poster noted below.

      That is a good suggestion and I tried it several times but was never able to identify just where they were coming from. I’m sure it works for some though.

    I sure appreciate your work at this. Great explanation. I had good luck with the borax, but not done yet. As you said, killing lots of ants is great, but does not solve the problem. Killing the queen is vital. You tried the boric acid, and it wasn’t great. I live in NW Indiana, and my problem with carpenter ants is they make a mess of my flowers as I cut them to bring them in. They really love peony buds, and they are just all over ‘em. UGH They also get on my milkweed, and mess with my Monarch Butterflies. The caterpillars do not survive them as they kill them as they protect their aphids. We also get a few in the house, but not much of a problem. This year, I put out little cups from the $ store, like 10 for $1.25. Then, 5 parts sugar, 3 parts boiling water, and 1 part 20 mule team Borax. I mixed like 2 cups total, and added the sugar first, then the boiling water and stirred. When all dissolved, I added the borax and mixed thoroughly. The little cups I drilled small holes on each side, just one per side near the top even with the rectangular shape. Then put in the containers and put the lids on. I spread them around my yard where I did not want them. I spilled a little of the mix that was left after filling the containers and then put the bait trap next to the spill. It has been just a few days since I launched my attack. I need to clean out the traps and resupply them, but there are very few ants around where my bait is. My peonies are nearly clean of ‘em. More work to do, but I hope this works for me and others. I am not done, but have a good start here. GOOD LUCK! This is the best video I used, and I only paid attention to the ant part. There is a part I and II: ua-cam.com/video/ehmCSksMEeU/v-deo.html He gave me the best advice. Not that this site here doesn't do a great help, but I did my work on a budget.

    If they're not eating the wood, what are they eating? I put glue traps down, then review them in a week to see if I have visitors, I find tiny bugs on them.

    Thanks for sharing, it should help. I get little red ants that go after the cat kibble. He's missing teeth and a make a mess. Maggie farms borax based bait traps took about a week to make them disappear. Had a remote outdoor electric outlet with little reds ants in the box. Some borax powder mixed with peanut butter spread on the inside cover got rid of them. I have carpenter ant frass at the rear garage door and a probable nest at the front where the wood siding is damaged from a bad gutter. Just had a new roof put on. Hopefully that fixes my wet wood issue however i need to get some clapboard replaced. After watching this, i think my best plan is to bait, then dust. After the nest is gone, put a perimeter spray and work on sealing the various gaps in the siding, windows and doors.

    This is not a DIY. This is a review of a bunch of products and their effect on carpenter ants. You're advise should be, don't be like me and buy any products at home depot or any big box store as their a waste of money!! The only professional grade product you used to control carpenter ants in this video was the 375a which is bait. You're supposed to put a minimal amount in a spot where you see ant activity and make sure that bait is COMPLETELY GONE before putting out more this stuff its expensive and you really don't need much and it should attract the ant RIGHT AWAY. In addition to bait, you should have something that doesn't require digestion 1) Insecticide with Bifenthrin such as BIFEN IT , 2) Insect growth regulator like TEKKO PRO to prevent them from reproducing and 3) Wood damage prevention product like BORA CARE which makes the wood toxic so they don't chew up anymore of your home. You should also try to figure out how they got into your house in the first place, is there a tree branch that touches the house or are their carpenter ants on the power line. Look at near by trees and how theyre growing if their growing sideways that is probably another satellite colony. Carpenter ant activity happens late at night so inspect at night. Carpenter ants are territorial , and will kill other ants including termites for territory . Centipedes and Spiders are predators so if you see them let them be so they can fight the carpenter ants. Last tip, don't make your own bait, that sweet and protein based stuff could attract a squirrel or another small mammal and kill it.

  • @dzerres
    @dzerres 2 роки тому

    You should have read the ingredients of that powder stuff. I believe it is Diatomaceous Earth. You didn't mention how much your brand name product was but if you just buy the straight Diatomaceous Earth it probably would be much cheaper.. As for some baits working or not working, I believe you're mixing up ants that go for sugar and these carpenter ants which only go for proteins.
