Welcome to the industry! It really depends on what type of agency you join. A smaller agency will not require programming languages. However, a larger agency with more complex systems may require some. They also could hire data scientists so the analysts would not need to do the big programming. Overall, as an entry analyst, you would need to understand basic querying methods in programs like Microsoft Excel and Access, depending on what the agency uses. Thanks for chiming in. I think data quality is the responsibility of the entire agency. Analysts need clean data to analyze. Chief's need quality analysis to make decisions. Officers need quality data to be driven by proper operations. We all need quality data and we must all contribute to such. My book "Building a Crime Analysis Legacy" (excellenceinanalytics.com/book) shares a three-tiered approach to data quality improvements: officer level to the top level. The book bonuses outline specific strategies as well. This is an agency-wide challenge and an agency-wide solution. Hope this helps.

Law enforcement can be a challenging field for many. Whether on the street or behind a computer, people in a first responding field put others first.
