Naoshima, an art and culture island | injapanstories
Among the islands scattered in the Seto Inland Sea, in Japan's central region, Naoshima Island is the center of art and culture. Once an island flourished as smelter town, today, it Naoshima Island has become an international center for contemporary art.
An island in the Seto Inland Sea that is known for its contemporary art museums, architecture and sculptures, Naoshima is a part of Kagawa Prefecture, the island with its Mediterranean atmosphere, beautiful beaches, sunny weather and amazing scenery combined with a laid back, rural feel is one of the best getaway destinations from Japan's large urban areas.
Much of Naoshima Island's art was installed by the Benesse Corporation. The company oversees the art museums, installations and sculptures both on Naoshima and on toher neighboring islands. A well known Japanese architect, Ando Tadao designed most of the museums that include the Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum and all the buildings of the Benesse House. In addition, municipal buildings and schools were designed by the modern architect Ishii Kazuhiro which can be found through out the island.
