Although I have highest respect for MK as a scientist, I think he is completely off on this. There is a fundamental irreducible difference between consciousness and intelligence (natural or artificial). It is that intelligence is not coupled with a mind. It is possible AI could do profound damage, but it is likely because it is controlled for that intended purpose by some human(s). AI on its own can never become conscious or want to take over the world. It could do something terrible if someone maliciously uses it or gives it wrong goals (for example, a simple solution for ending world poverty is to eliminate all humans who are poor). AI has no discernment. It does what it is asked to achieve, and the ways it does can be outside what a human might be able to conceive due to our conditioning. One solid example to prove my point: they tried to train an AI to spot a particular species of fish in an image. Then when it looked at the trained weights, it turned out the AI was looking for presence of tips of human fingers in the photo to make its prediction. It turned out all the images of this prize catch fish were taken when being held by someone. No human would think that way. We would look to identify the features of the fish. We also know the fingers are not part of fish but just part of circumstance the fish was in. So we dont make that correlation. An AI has no such inhibitions. Because if you understand the fundamental nature of consciousness and how it is outside calculations (as can be proven using Godell's incompleteness theorem) as well as how AI is programmed, you can know AI will never be conscious or a threat on its own (but it can and certainly will be in the wrong or incompetent human hands). I think that people tend to oversimplify the issue of consciousness through artificial intelligence. It would take a great deal more than just a computer calculating at brain-like speeds to produce true intelligence. Artificial intelligence really lacks the free will principle needed for consciousness, as it is simply executing code. Even those that "change" their own coding (if you were to follow it line by line) could arguably be predictable in that same sense, and thus never truly "thinking."
