Classical Grooming
United States
Приєднався 26 лис 2021
This channel is dedicated to classical forms of grooming, exploring historical and modern barbershop products, styles, and experiences. We prefer to review these forms with some historical and cultural contexts when practical, and to promote grooming less as an act of vanity, and more of an exercise in self-care and personal expression of self-worth.
Currently, we focus on products and styles that have had appeal to American men through the 20th century to today. We'd eventually like to venture out into similar studies of male grooming throughout the world, and find collaborators that can share classical grooming perspectives of women as well.
We appreciate your participation in this venture, and ask you to subscribe and support the channel in any way that you can.

I had to go an find some online after this review
Where did you get it? I can't find it.
I found some on "The Razor Company" website
@@Clank2237 Thank you
Well, since I find menthol a little boring and I LOVE glass bottles, I think you just directed me to my first bottle of Aqua Velva. Is there a site you can recommend? I can just google it if not. Cheers! -Scott
10/10 my favourite aftershave ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Shave cream and shoe leather conditioner! Amazing. Thanks for contributing to the channel!
Thanks for the review! Because I am a Pinaud superfan I would have eventually bought this. But this really would not be what I was expecting. Thin, drippy and brushless? What an odd niche of wet shaving. But to those that love it, I'm glad this is still being made. -Cheers!
My pleasure! Brushless shaving creams definitely have their place; I use one every other shave, otherwise my skin gets irritated by the soap, although I do prefer the thicker ones. Thanks for the comment!
do you know of any good cream or soap to use with brush?
Lots! I have a playlist on the channel talking about all the soaps that I have tried. My standard is Arko. However, its not for everyone, as it has a very old world scent.
Great video CG! Looking quite dapper sir. This reminds me, my tub of Clubman’s is running low. This fantastic product, along with my array of Clubman aftershaves, is in my regular rotation. Absolutely love their products.
Thanks for watching! I agree, Clubman's has some great stuff!
Few things worse than the cussed shaver clogging! Think I'll stay with my classic green Proraso, I really like the cool menthol on the face. Always avails me a close, smooth shave. I'm really enjoying these little visits here - relaxing, & helps make the shaving ritual a little less like a chore. Thanks, and take good care...
Proraso Green is good stuff! Thanks for being a part of the channel!
Great review. I’ve been thinking of trying this, but I don’t have a light touch. In fact, I have a very hard and spastic touch. I’m assuming that I probably should skip this and just stick with the Proraso Blue that I’ve been using? I love the Proraso Blue and hope that you’ll review it in the future. Thank you very much CG.
@@Michael_R1957 I haven't tried Proraso Blue yet, but I look forward to it! Stephan's cream is thicker and more forgiving. Thanks for the feedback!
This classic shaving soap doesn’t suit a nerd like you 😂
Au Contraire! I like it a lot!
I use Florida water but I’m unfamiliar with Peruvian Florida water. Thanks for the video CG!
I remember this one very well from the seventies. It was wildly popular. I'm headed over to Amazon after this to purchase some, big-time nostalgia!
Its one of my favorites!
Interesting. I'd like to try the original Florida Water, isn't it a very "Old Timey" aftershave/skin conditioner? Is there a particular brand I should look for? I'm a big fan of the fall & winter scents. This one giving a strong "Burn," maybe send a bottle over to Ken @ kensurfs, lol. Take care...
Rotting pineapple is right lots of character love it
Unc OG, i would suggest review of Aramis 😀
I have one planned! Perhaps next month. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey OG, is edt version good enough for 30 year old?
I have not tried the EDT, only the cologne. I have been told that they do not smell the same, so unfortunately, I can't offer an opinion on it. But thanks for asking!
I find it to smell similar to Polo Sport.
Can this still be found at walmart, cvs, walgreens etc? i used to get it at walmart long ago
Yes. I picked mine up at Walmart.

Evening... I just finished up with what I've discovered as the quintessential "Barber Shop" aftershave...Lustray "Blue Spice." Scent takes me strait back to the barber's chair as a youngster when after a "Regular" haircut or a "Flat Top" he'd take the strait razor to my neck line after a vigorous stropping - then splash on a cool aftershave! And, it's wicked economical...
I reviewed Blue Spice a few years back. It's very nice and, yes, very economical! Lustray (now owned by Clubman) makes good stuff. Thanks for being part of the channel!
@@classicalgrooming Your welcome, indeed - Clubman products are tops. They are the gold standard of shaving accessories...
Talk about a coincidence! I used that today with my morning shave! It is a great scent and feels great on the skin.😊
I remember that comercial. That guy poped up out ofnthe water and I was like what the heck?
Have this wonderful product in my regular summer rotation. Works really well with like a coconut or citrus scented shaving soap. Very cooling and refreshing. Great video classical grooming! 👍
Does anyone know an official website to buy jovan musk
There are a number of retail stores that carry it, and a number of internet stores like Amazon, fragrancenet.com, but Jovan, which is owned by Coty, does not have an official site for purchase.
@@classicalgrooming Thank you
I recently bought a 100-pack of Gillette wilkinson sword razor blades for 14.39 $ here in Sweden...In my opinion they are the best razor blades for me..supersharp and smooth to shave with
Loved the scent after my barber used it, don’t know how it last so long, these barber scents usually only last for 30 minutes.
That's a great question! I used it a while after COVID and I'm wondering if I should revisit it to see if my experience is the same.
😊 first time I'd seen aquavelva ice blue was in a movie thought it looked more like mouthwash mixture.. coincidentally, a lot of people say it smells of lemon and mint With a little musk
There are some rumors that say that it was initially developed as a mouthwash, then reformulated as an aftershave. The scent description is not far off, but the main note to my nose is pettigrain, which has a floral and herbal scent to it. It's nice.
@classicalgrooming its good that its nice I'm glad I'd seen this video one day maybe I'll see what is like very far but description is a good helpful alternative for now ...thanks for making this video
Glad to see you did a video on Mesmerize. I wear this often. It is a good one. Avon looks like they have some good mens colognes. I wanted to try a vintage one they used to have called, Today Tomorrow Always.
I haven't heard of that one. That's interesting! Thanks for the comment!
Great old school review. 👍
I’ve always liked their Wild Country Cologne ( even in the newer formulation ). Should I take this for a spin, usually I don’t like things that are very fruity? Thanks for another excellent review, sir. P.S. You’re right, Scents of South Jersey will HATE this. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment! Mesmerize is not very fruity, at least to my nose, so I wouldn't think that would be a problem for you, but it does have a heaviness or dirtiness that may turn some people off. I can't say whether this would be for you, it is nothing like Wild Country, but I find it to be a good buy for the price. Your Mileage may vary!
Nice video. I've been wearing Aqua Velva for over 20 years. I would wear the Ice Blue Sport more in my highschool years, but in my mid 20's and onwards I started wearing the Classic Ice Blue. I literally wear 5 signature scents, that I'm loyal to. Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, John Varvatos by JV, Malizia Vetiver Uomo, and good old Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue. My life feels complete reaching for these on a regular basis..Lol!
Thanks for commenting, and that's a pretty nice selection of signature scents!
Great explanation CG! Really contemplating the leap into more detailed hair care. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the heads up! I never realized this product was a hair oil. I'm a big hair oil fan and use Gabel's Rose Hair Oil pretty much every day. My family's genetics blessed me with really thick hair and I find mineral oil does just the trick, where often, pomades are more hold than I need. I'll grab this at CVS and give it a try. Cheers! -Scott
I'm glad you liked it. It's funny, but I have been a Gabel's fan for most of my life, and I had no idea they had a Rose Hair oil! I will have to find out more. Thanks for the comment!
My grandfather always smelled like this in the 80's. I have a bottle in my cabinet as we speak
Try Suavecito's bay rum. It has a very nice scent as well.
I started to use the Lucky Tiger more then Vitalis because I believe they thinned out and made Vitalis weaker, had been using it for over 40 years and there is a difference
Vitalis is still a much better hair loation and product.
Just purchased Brut aftershave. It's ok - not offensive. Smells dated and is a very powdery fragrance.
Good for you for trying it out! I'm sorry that it wasn't your thing. The modern aftershaves are not as good as the Faberge Brut of yesteryear, but even then the drydown had a "powdery" aspect to it, so it still might not have been your cup of tea.
@@classicalgrooming I was more than happy to give it a go. I am a vetiver fan so this fragrance piqued my interest. I respect that the modern juice is likely a shade of the original. I have been wearing it all day now and unfortunaltely it reminds me too much of lavender talc senior people wear. I still enjoyed giving it a try and I can remeber my Grandad used to wear it, so it brought back some good memories.
Ingredients list as you show look almost identical - ALMOST. Now that the formulation is more or less so close, what counts is performance and formula behavior in use.
It smells good but doesn't stay on long even if you spray it on your clothes it still wear off fast
I refill the smaller size and use often. The barbers in the navy always had that at the end of a haircut.
I’ve been using Jeris without oil and also tried Jeris with oil, I had to pop open the top and remove some or most of the oil and pour back again, it was just to much. The product best for me is Lucky Tiger 3 in 1
Lucky Tiger works well! I did a review of it a couple of years ago. Thanks for the comment!
This one was the first balm or anything like it I ever tried. Severe irritation after a double edge razor shave prompted me to take a trip to a local store, and I found this Sensitive Postshave Lotion, took it home and applied a small amount. It worked as I hoped; or at least far less irritation upon applying it. Not at all greasy, either. Very strong fragrance, but I did not care. I just wanted to get rid of the burning irritation.
I love this so much. You described it perfectly. I always keep a bottle on hand. Haven’t tried the Whiskey Woods powder, yet. Have you tried it, sir? Thank you for another great review.
I have not tried the Whiskey Woods powder yet. Thanks for the tip!
Patrick by Fragrances of Ireland is much nicer and the best Irish Spring stand in.
I've heard of it, but haven't had the chance to try it yet!
On my skin it's gone after 2 hours
Yeah, skin chemistry plays a big part. For some fragrances, I have to put a little on my clothes to get the fragrance to last.
Lime sec vs citrus musk?
My vote? Lime Sec
@@classicalgrooming hmmmm interesting, any specific reason why? Debating between the 2
Zingari, b&m, macduffs, murphy&mcneil,a&e, declaration grooming, los jabones de joserra, westman, aylm, SV - those are my fav soaps
Some interesting lines to consider. Currently, I keep fragrance products to actual EdTs/EdPs. For soap, it's Grandpa Company's Pine Tar soap! Love that stuff. Dr Woods Black Soap facial wash is also brilliant.
I love a good tar soap! I like tar shampoo as well, but I'm afraid that I am in the minority.
I have 35 soaps but only three matching splashes. Atmotic from PAA is my absolute favorite.
PAA is good stuff. Haven't tried Atmotic. I might pick up a sample! Thanks for the comment!
Absolutely love small batch soaps! My den is full of these magnificent products! Great video classical grooming! 👍
Since I posted my first comment here, I’ve become a fan of Proraso Blue. Like it a lot. Last night I recommended Proraso Red to someone looking for shaving products that help folks with Coarse Beards. Thanks, classical grooming, for all that you do.
This is my little brother's aftershave.
