Looks like many passengers didn't pay before they got off!
0:19 ‘I return 2017’ - close enough
Brisbane and Melb kept their trams; now we have reintroduced them.
Small correction, Brisbane closed its tramway system in April 1969 (without a replacement)
Its funny. 60 years agio they were taken away. Now we just have a uses toy tram. I remember we went on the free weekend after they opened as a trip ito the city
it's all much, MUCH older than they say it is in the 'history' books.
Ahh machines were working back then, then after a few years went broke and never fixed until opal came along
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice! Out of curiosity what inverter is installed on 358?
There is a power inverter fitted to the car (during a previous refurbishment in the 1980s ) which provides a step down to 24V DC to provide power for auxiliary equipment. As part of the most recent overhaul we have replaced this with a complete new-build unit as the old one had failed completely.
@SydneyTramwayMuseum OK. Would there be any chance to get some info on the new built inverter? We are trying to restore 372 in Perth but we also have a failed inverter. We have not been able to find a suitable replacement or alternative.
@poxbox3030 Ours was custom built by a former contact we no longer have access to.
...Very nice video, LIKE...
Many thanks!
What a fabulous asset that was junked. Makes one wonder how this decision was reached. US consultants perhaps!
What a fabulous series of films. I'm in my 80th year and loving re-living this wonderful era. Bravo.
Thanks I never travelled on the Bondi tram but I rode the second last tram to La Perouse. I was a regular commuter on the La Perouse tram and it cost me a silver thrupence (if I could not bluff the tram conductor). If I managed to dodge the fare I would buy myself a vanilla slice with mock cream.
Loved it. My father was a tram driver and we lived around the Maroubra area. So sad they took the trams away. Very efficient transport
Where did the time go. Surreal.
Awesome to see Sydney as my dad & his dad saw it..what a treat !!!
The tram rail tracks on the right handside of Glebe Point road running sout to north at 9.12 to 9.22 are partly still there. I hope they remain there as a record to the past. Sydney was a finer place back then - I wish I was around then and not now.
All those people are dead
Delightful, beautifully imagined and well shot. Well done.
I remember Norm. He and my father were friends
The treeless Inner West of the 1950s is very different in 2024.
Great work in rescuing history from being lost forever. Look forward to seeing the tram museum when I next visit Sydney, my hometown. From California.
6:46 Victoria Rd, White Bay, looking north then south as tram comes from the direction of Glebe Island Bridge & Pyrmont (Sydney). 6:58 Victoria Rd, White Bay, looking south as tram heading other direction into city towards Glebe Island Bridge & Pyrmont Bridge.
6:22 Lyons Rd intersection with Victoria Rd looking towards Sydney. 6:28 Original two-lane Iron Cove Road Bridge (which was far too narrow), looking towards Rozelle/Balmain, with the newer Iron Cove Bridge under construction to the left which was first four narrow lanes, then three lanes with an out-rigger lane on south-western side). (Latest curved bridge is sited approximately above where the original bridge was located.)
Lots of Neutral Bay action here
High rotation for this one, interesting in every way.
Norm often came to see us in Alexandria during the mid 1950s.
This is a beautiful vid
THANK YOU SHARING GREAT HISTORY VIDEO ON SYDNEY TRANSPORT
Fabulous video
Great to see that steps are being made to preserve Loftus Junction signal box. It is significant because it is the first signal box in the metropolitan area as the wires used to just start before it if the train was coming from the Wollongong direction. If you look at the brick substation in the background I'm surprised that Mortdale Maintenance Centre was not built at the location of this museum. You guys are lucky to have got this site. Look where Hornsby Maintenance Centre is in relation to the terminus station. You could send an early morning service back to Royal National Park to start the City Circle service there without anyone near the mainline barely noticing like what you do with the trams on that back line.
The Manly Line closed prematurely in 1942 during the petrol rationing period.
I wish we still had these !! Bloody nsw govt!! Get rid of anything useful see there alot of taxi cabs on the streets?? Try finding one nowadays???? Lol
@12.15 That's Five Way Paddington!
Such an important piece of heritage now has a chance of restoration for future generations to appreciate. Former Sydney resident, from California.
@ 21.30 Features east bound journey from Oxford Street Taylor Square through to Paddington town Hall on the right.
Sydney looks remarkably tenth rate and slum like in the "good old days."
Amazing footage of Paddington where I live now.
One video where I won’t complain music is 2 loud.
i'm glad we kept our trams in melbourne they are better than buses !!!
i'm glad we kept our trams in melbourne, they are better than buses !!!
Another interesting video from the “Shooting Through” series. Wish I could find the complete series in place so I can binge-watch whichever ones I wanted!
Interesting video. I rode trams at that old site on many occasions during the 1960's and 1970's. By the time all this move happened, I had already moved from Sydney to Melbourne Australia. My last visit to the old site was in 1983.
Just fantastic travelled on these trams going to school loved them. Have you showed any going thru Annandale if not would like to see them. Thank you.
Not Annandale (?) but have seen "Inner West" tram film -- (Would send 'link' but I carelessly did not store it.)
Super great vision
Haunting Time Machine music
I would give my left ball to go back
Ouch !!!
@ tompchromedome No you wouldn't. You revisionist phony.
Great civilisation - But you may take heart from the fact that whatever were the forces of nature which gave rise to that beautiful civilisation - it was more evolved - and so however far this current reversal extends - some distant civilisation will move towards the same way of life and cityscape which you admire so very much! That same humane, uncomplicated, fully aware, sincere, idealistic and romantic way of life - complete with the sensitively designed architecture - will re-emerge. The grounds upon which I base my prognosis could not be more sound : Ask yourself whether a more evolved man would rather live in the society which inhabited Sydney during the 1930s to the 1950s - Or whether he would prefer to interact with the new generation of petty drudges?
So sad to have lost the trams in Sydney. Now it’s a struggle just to get a few short lines built.
so glad such an important part of Sydney history has been saved for posterity. Look forward to visiting the museum whenever I can return to visit Sydney, my home town. From California.
i managed to ride the Sydney trams a few precious times in the early sixties as a child with my parents. This video took me back to the neighborhoods I knew when I was a student at UNSW and living in the Eastern suburbs. Do you have anything on trams in Strathfield and Homebush, where I spent my childhood years. though I'm not sure if any trams were ever in the Inner West? Thanks for a very nostalgic journey back to my hometown. Really appreciated the details. I've liked and subscribed. From California.
Watching this is a real nostalgia trip. I rode out to La Perouse on the morning of the last day and later saw the convoy pass through Taylor Square. I was 10 and thought it was a stupid idea on the part of the NSW Government.
