Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation!
That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.
We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.

Shout out to The Sundays!!!! ❤❤😍😍🙏 I absolutely Love them too ❤❤ It's profoundly upsetting that they don't release their decades of (home recorded) material
Fantastic band! 🤟🏻
What about Pulp- Something Changed for a cracking little love song?
That's a good one!
....gotta also comment on the music press, as Mogwai were a perfect example of a band I had not heard yet here in New Zealand, but couldn't wait to hear them, due to what NME and Melody Maker were reporting in their columns, and they weren't wrong, phaaaarrrrrkin blown away, and a live version of Ex Cowboy was the 1st song I heard
NME & Melody Maker were so important back then!
Ex Cowboy has always been a massive favourite!!! Have seen them twice here in NZ, and luckily Ex Cowboy was on the setlist both times......Best Band in the World!!!! Love your Podcast down here👍
Thanks so much for tuning in, tell all your NZ mates! Have you heard of a band over there called 'Search For Yeti'?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Sure have, a Wellington band. I'm in Christchurch where the Mighty Gordons (later Bailter Space) were spawned, also a huge Jakob (Hawkes Bay) fan and we also have Distance an excellent Post Rock band here in the Shaky City!!!
I saw ADF support Rage against the machine at wembley. The loudest gig i've heard.
Wembley stadium? Must have been insane?!
@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Arena. During the battle of Los Angeles tour.
I sometimes think I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like really Idles. I thought they were alright up to 'joy' but they completely lost me after that.
Me Julie loves IDLES better still she really loves Otoboke Beaver and is well jel that Luke saw them, she's been trying to see them for ages! Love Otoboke Beaver!!
@@mattjammy9884 Luke’s got you covered 🤘🏻
Heaven or Las Vegas definitely the peak album for me. Stoked I saw them play their last gig at The Albert Hall. Heard a story way back then that Liz was keen on Massive Attack.
Ooh, I love The Albert Hall, must have been an epic gig?
Punk didn't end in 79, there was the 82 resurgence with bands like The Exploited, G.B.H. Discharge, the Oi movement and then the anarcho crusty punk scene with Crass, Conflict, Amebix etc that went on to influence grindcore and thrash metal. Sonic Youth were a band with a couple, KIm Gordon and Thurston Moore.
Luke loves a bit of grindcore! In terms of couples in bands I think we were thinking more of any 3 pieces with couples in? 🤘🏻
I can do the android thing, how do I get in touch? Does the pod have an email?
Yep, email us at stupidandcontagiouspodcast@gmail.com 🤟🏻
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Cool! I'll do that now.
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Just sent.

Omg yesss I love Cocteau Twins!! My favorite would be the Love’s Easy Tears Single and the song Those Eyes That Mouth🔥🔥
@ Great choices! We agree, what a great band! 🤘🏻
Inspirals shit over oasis tenfold!
🤘🏻
What album ?
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Best goddammed lyrics in the whole godless world IMO. I terrorise my neighbourhood with Carter around once a month when its not too cold. I drag my JBL 4560s, the18" bins, 12" mid-tops and the horns out of the garage into my garden and fire it all up for a few hours. Used to play Carter at raves sometimes but had a tendency to clear the dancefloor. The newer generations don't seem to 'get it'. Carter is great to amplify and play through vintage PA systems I never thought The Wonderstuff was classed as Greebo!!??- Always been a fan of them!
Sounds like you’ve got a decent set up there?! 🤘🏻not for your neighbours but then again who doesn’t want to hear a blast of Carter once in a while?!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast I used to have loads of PA kit but sold most the really juicy modern stuff years ago. next door did go ape shit once. Thought they were out but they weren't! Police turned up twice and requested I turn it down a bit. There was talk of a noise abatement order from the council, so thought id comply. Its not that much louder than people digging up the road IMO and in 'social hours' but travels quite far!! I drove about 1 mile away from my house in the direction the stack was pointed with it left turned up loud and could hear every lyric of Charlie Brown clear as day! Came back home as fast as possible and put some Kate Bush on to calm people down a bit!!! She sounded great too!!
@@cassiomx88 Those bass bins travel dude! Charlie Brown has to be played loud!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast The bass was fairly contained to my local area. Its the mids and high frequencies that seem to travel very far even with ambient daytime noise. It all heavy duty stuff meant for pro concert/festival sound reinforcement - not small pub gigs or one bloke in his back garden events. lol
One of the best albums in the world. Absolute masterpiece
Agreed!
Continuing on the Reggae theme mentioned early in this week's episode, I liked "Shine" by Aswad and "You Don't Love Me (No No No)" by Dawn Penn in 1994, both were played a lot during the summer that year.
I saw Aswad a few years ago before the frontman died and they were really good!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast - That would a great gig to see when Drummie Zeb was alive. I was gutted when he passed away. Aswad had some great songs back in the day.
@ THey really did and totally awesome live!
Two landmark Hip Hop albums were released in 1994, "Illmatic" by Nas and "Ready To Die" by Notorious B.I.G.
I remember the Nas album well & who doesn’t love a bit of Biggie! 🤘🏻
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast - I was just looking at Luke's Spotify playlist. "The World Is Yours" by Nas and "Juicy" by Biggie would have fit the playlist perfectly for some Hip Hop balance.
@@keithroll8413 The mixtape usually follows who we talk about on the podcast, we do love a bit of 90s hip hop!
Prince finally managed to get a UK number one single in 1994 at the 42nd time of asking with "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"
I do like a bit of Prince! Musical Genius
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast - My Sister and Brother In Law were lucky enough to go to a Prince gig when he did the 21 night residency at the 02 Arena in London back in 2007
@@keithroll8413 I'd forgotten about that residency, insane when you think about it!
Sabres of paradise were great Andy weatherall on warp records. That goldie song was also great. Saw orbital that year one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. I love that massive attack album protection as well. Saw underworld that year as well they were also brilliant and saw their dj Darren Emerson at a club afterwards good times.
Sounds like a vintage year for you! You were at Sheffield then right?
Yeah I was in Sheffield 91 -95
@ 🤘🏻
1994 was a turning point year..The music, fashion us Mods we’re into came back for air. Fred Perrys , Ben Sherman’s, Adidas Gazelles , Scooters ect.. Gigs were bloody awesome. One album /band you’ve overlooked “Echobelly - “ Everyone’s Got One”. would be great if you could get Sonya on…
The year of the ‘sharp kid’! We’ve been trying to get Echobelly on for a while, will keep hammering!
Good interview. Clearly, you enjoyed the documentary, and it is excellent, but if you really want more info, check out Greg Prato's book A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other. The book is on another level.
I think Luke’s read it and confirmed it’s a fantastic read! 🤘🏻
1:19:30 - the stupid fucking tools didn't even hear the potential in the You and Me Song - it went viral quarter of a century before going viral existed, FFS. What the actual fuck were these clowns playing at. 😆😆 That track will be a five figure annual royalty cheque for each band member to this day, I'd bet. Unless they got totally shafted. Which, y'know, is probably par for the course.
man i used to hate the docking stage on Moon Cresta - the Einstein point at the end is well made, btw.
The docking stage is always tricky! Einstein?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast 1:13:35 😆
@ Dave’s certainly got a point! 🤘🏻

He's great right?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast absolutely i wish they had released more : - /
@ who knows, maybe they will? 🤘🏻
I saw SMASH at Stoke Wheatsheaf in 1923 - all i remember is a red leather biker jacket singer, sweaty, and good punk energy and angst. Imo couldn't touch Snuff, who were at their best in '88-'89, a few years before (and owing more to hardcore than first wave British punk). Any of you S&C guys into Snuff at all? First EP best. Unfuckwithable, I think. Anyway, I subbed and will be catching up in the next few weeks. This channel pisses all over Indie Sleaze and that stupid Oasis one. Can't remember the name.
Trying to get Snuff on! We are fans for sure! thanks for the kind words re the channel, tell all your friends! 🤟🏻
One of the best years ever in music(in my lifetime) if not the best. IMHO
It was a vintage year for sure!
Hingley is essential to the Carpets iconic sound. A really strong singer and front man. An Orator. Life & Beast Inside & Goldfish are some of the best albums of the 90s for me. B-side Skidoo their finest moment for me❤
He's a fantastic singer and what a guy!
One of the things that makes the Inspirals great is the bass playing of Martyn Walsh. Mermaid is a cracking track, Caravan, Party In The Sky, I Want You the list goes on. They’re a great band, bummer they had a falling out. Tom is far and away their best singer.
He’s a great player for sure! Band politics are the downfall of many a band unfortunately, I don’t think they all hate each other so who knows? Maybe still time for the classic lineup to get together! 🤘🏻
It was great!
Must get to see it next time round 🤘🏻
1990 was the year Reading changed to an 'indie/alternative' Festival.. Pixies and The Cramps headlined the other days in 1990. Faith No More played too as well as Ned's, MC4 and Senseless Things. It was because the Festival was taken over by Vince Power of Mean Fiddler (who owned all the cool venues in London I believe??' .... Vince Power would be a really interesting guest actually, you could ask him all about it!!
Oh damn, he died last year... :(
Thats a good shout and yes of course that was the year of the indie bands!
@ ah
Beast inside
Leatherface - Mush
First band I ever saw were Leatherface supporting Senseless Things!
Luke mentioned Swervedriver.....great shout. Raise n Mezcal head have been re issued for a while now and would recommend either.
🤘🏻
You have to get Seamonsters. The wedding presents classic LP.... Steve albini produced
That’s a good one! 🤘🏻
There's a great re issue of seamonsters on double vinyl that features all the b sides from the singles of that album and the peel sessions from the time....
Really good, as per usual. Inspirals are a band you revisit and feel like you’ve over looked them . Probably due to being out shone by the other contemporaries around at the time. Ive been left now with an image of bands selling their merchandise on a market stall outside after a gig. Ian Brown or Jarvis Cocker yelling out “Special offer 2 for price of one, roll up, roll up” . James D Bradfield “ Everything must go, Manics jamboree gift bags” Ha ha. I’ll leave it there , the list is endless. Anyway , really enjoy what you’re doing. Good stuff.👍🎸
I like that image too! Indie wheeler dealers! Thanks for tuning in!

The nineties was/is the greatest decade for music & the maddest time for me. I was 13 to 23! My favourite band has to be Nirvana ❤. Oasis come kind of secondish ... even though The Sex Pistols have to be my overall greatest band! Because of the punk revolution of all music! 🙌 Plus since I was late teens my nickname has been Nancy after Nancy Spungen! Started by my daughter's dadio 😁... Obviously he's my Sid. I loved most bands in the 90's, mainly grunge, Indie,Manchester britpop, rap, dance, thrash metal etc etc, lol.Strangers like my driving instructor for example, called me "A nineties wreck head"!.. Thanks for tuning in, hes a top bloke right? And what a band!
Steve's comments on the music industry in the 90s and the political situation right now are so "to the point" and "spot on" in this interview. A very intelligent dude. Great show guys.
He's bang on right? We agree! Thanks so much for tuning in 🤟🏻
That was a great episode. I definitely have to agree with Stuart about Mudhoney over Nirvana. Well done with that interview Luke!! It's definitely one of my favorites I really love the podcast especially the chatter at the beginning and end. The affection you have for each other makes all the difference. That and Dave is an absolute fucking legend. I look forward to many more.....David Gedge maybe? The Real People? Northside??
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for tuning in! We are working on all those guests but at least one looks like it’s happening soon 🤘🏻
Just based on what I know about ADF, and Intellectually, I completely agree that Britpop was a disgrace and the music that matters pushes things forward. On the other hand... Boo Radleys were a top top guitar pop band, Oasis were (very briefly) one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time... some Britpop music matter. Also on the other hand... and this might be deeply unfair... when I think of 90s dance music I think of brilliant innovative electronic music that was really pushing things forward. The more eclectic dance influenced bands, or bands that were dance with guitars, or big beat... that's all "let's water down dance for the people who don't like dance".
Intersting take on it, some good points for sure. I think there were some great Britpop bands too and I quite liked the whole scene but itas hard to argue with Steve's take on it. I think the dance acts incorporating guitars bridged a gap between the indie kids and the ravers so you're kind of right in that respect?
