N3FJP Antenna Tour - 2015 - Dipoles & Loops at 6/10 of a Wavelength Work Great! In some circles, a dipole antenna doesn’t get a lot of respect. Sure, dipoles are great starter antennas - easy to build, very stealthy and inexpensive, but there’s a perception some folks hold that dipoles for bands 20 meters and up just don’t quite cut it for contesting and DX. I used to be one of them! It’s under...

    I run an IC-705 10w and run a 20m dipole at 42' based on your recommendations. I laugh at the signal reports when the other station reports 100w plus, multi element beans or hex beams, and they just gave me an rst higher than I gave them. I have no issue getting into Europe and have 1&3 qso's a week with NZ and or AUS. I'm almost done with my quad loop on 20m and will test it at the same height soon. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

    At the beginning, after choosing DXSpotting, ... you literally fly past a menu starting with Configure, then Display DX Column Headers, Spot DX..., Band Map, Large DX Spots, and Lookup US States....... No idea which choice you chose. I was able to pause the video to view the options..... Configure, Display DX Column Headers, Spot DX...., Band Map, Large DX Spots Form. You seem to be clueless, as to how you present yourself. I'm frustrated.

    Great setup. What kind of coax feed line do you send to the remote box from the shack? You also have to feed it 4 conductor with your feed line to use the remote switch? Lastly, what feed-line did you use from the remote box to the antenna feed point? I might try a similar setup. Adding up my costs first. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm pretty sure you did a great job with this video. Having said that, I'm finding the LoTW is incredibly difficult. Where do you upload FROM? I've entered all my contacts on eQSL and QRZ. Scott, your no-compromise approach is compelling. Thanks for presenting it! For a 20m horizontal dipole (no V) located at 42', would you feed it with 50 Ohm coax or would you use an impedance matching transformer (such as a 12th wavelength)? Would you use a balun (since a dipole is balanced and coax isn't)? Or are these accommodations unnecessary?

    • @Affirmatech
      @Affirmatech 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your kind words! I always use 50 ohm coax on dipoles, whether V or flat. I am by no means an expert on baluns and can't verify this next piece of information, but I understand that the power loss a balun introduces is about the same as you would pick up in performance, making it a zero sum gain. My dipoles, fed with 50 ohm coax without baluns work really well.

    Thanks for the update! A few comments and questions. (1) You wrote in the QRZ logbook page the following: "QRZ also provides the option to link your QRZ account directly to your LoTW account, so that when you upload to LoTW, your QRZ log is updated automatically as well." - I'm not sure if the "automatically" part is accurate, unless I'm missing something. As far as I'm familiar, one has to manually go into the QRZ logbook and select import every so often to download from LoTW into QRZ. I haven't seen an option to set it to do so "automatically" in a periodic fashion. (2) On the QRZ logbook page, there is the "enable real time upload" option. I can only assume that once you "log" the contact, the software will push it to QRZ, or it will do it in batches when closing out? Is that accurate? I didn't want to enable it until I was positive. (3) Before your update, I would upload to LoTW and then the next day, go into my QRZ logbook and import from LoTW. Worked great. Now, I assume I can upload to both within minutes. However, I assume that every now and then, I'm still going to have to import from LoTW so that the "LoTW only folks" and related confirmations are imported and synched for QRZ award credit. Is that accurate? I also just want to make sure that uploading to both isn't going to cause a strange duplicate issue down the road. I know that was a lot thrown at you. My apologies in advance. But, keep up the great work! Big fan of your software! Much appreciated!

    • @Affirmatech
      @Affirmatech 2 роки тому

      Hi MCB, Thanks for your interest! The new feature focuses on direct interface with QRZ, so yes, if you use the LoTW linking method, your contacts will not be automatically marked with a Q until you do a download from our software on the QRZ form. If you use our new, direct, QRZ integration, the Qs will be added automatically on download (if previously uploaded from LoTW), or upload and download if done via the QRZ form in AC Log. Yes, enable real time upload will upload on entry. To satisfy both LoTW and QRZ only folks, keep your entire log uploaded to both online services. QRZ will filter the duplicates. If you have any more questions, please e-mail direct via the contact e-mail link on our web page. Enjoy! 73, Scott N3FJP

      @@Affirmatech Thanks Scott. Good copy on answers to 2 and 3. Regarding the 1st question, I wasn't referring to the letter's Q's being added. I think we were lost in translation on that one. Ha. However, in re-reading the following: "QRZ also provides the option to link your QRZ account directly to your LoTW account, so that when you upload to LoTW, your QRZ log is updated automatically as well" I now realize that the phrase "upload to LoTW" really means "upload to LoTW from within your QRZ account." Since you had noted that in your AC log page, I was interpreting that as "upload to LoTW from AC Log" which didn't make sense as I knew that wouldn't update the QRZ logbook automatically. Since the update was all about your software, I logically assumed you were talking about your software in that very specific phrasing/sentence. You were not. Understood. Thanks.

      Hi. That's been accurate as far as I've found, that we download each program individually. That said, I found that I don't need or want every program, so that helps save space on my laptop. Plus, I really don't download the program until about a week before I need it. In the event that there's an update, as long as I'm online, the program knows, and prompts me to update when I open it. They email you your password list shortly after the purchase. Every program has its own registration code, and it's tied to your callsign. If you change your callsign, just email them, and they'll correct that on their end.
