Aspergillosis is a disease caused by a type of fungus known as Aspergillus, which is commonly found in the environment, especially in decaying organic matter, soil, and dust. While this fungus is generally harmless to people with healthy immune systems, it can cause severe infections in individuals with weakened immune defenses. Aspergillosis can range from allergic reactions to life-threatening invasive infections.
Types of Aspergillosis
1. Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA):
This form of aspergillosis primarily affects people with lung conditions like asthma or cystic fibrosis.
2. Aspergilloma (Fungus Ball):
Aspergilloma occurs when a ball of fungal filaments forms in a pre-existing lung cavity, often as a result of tuberculosis or sarcoidosis.
3. Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA):
CPA affects people with chronic lung disease and is characterized by progressive lung damage over months or years.
4. Invasive Aspergillosis:
It can spread from the lungs to other organs, including the brain, heart, and kidneys.
Symptoms include fever, chest pain, coughing with blood, and breathlessness.
Risk Factors
Weakened immune systems (e.g., cancer, organ transplant, HIV/AIDS).
Chronic lung diseases like asthma, tuberculosis, or cystic fibrosis.
Prolonged use of corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs.
Exposure to environments with high levels of mold spores, such as construction sites.
Diagnosis
Imaging: CT scans or X-rays of the chest are commonly used to detect lung involvement.
Laboratory Tests: Blood tests, sputum cultures, and biopsy samples may be used to detect the fungus or immune response to it.
