    I’m watching kenshin ashura bc of this I initially thought it was more goju than any other okinawan martial art styles. Especially the emphasis on Sanchin, cat stance, and close hand blocks but seeing the footage I think the open hand stabs do say a lot. Man wish it was goju ryu. But love the representation of traditional arts in a series and not just MMA.

    What I find that people get confused the most is because of the sport side now, be it full contact or point sparring. Those are exactly that, sports that may or may not translate well into a self-defense situation, so people deem karate unnefective. I’m also a Uechi-ryu practictioner and I’ve been working in securtiy for almost seven years now and i cant count the amount of times that a wa-uke+shin to the calf sweep have worked for me in my job. That’s what self defense is for, the majority of people are untrained in any martial art whatsoever, not to say the amount of people who train “bullshido” styles, people dont seem to understand you wont run around bumping into elite ufc fighters every day. Sorry for the long comment hehehe cheers from Brazil!

    are those boxing punches?

    • @irishmaninokinawa5268
      @irishmaninokinawa5268 Рік тому

      Yes! The history of boxing and its influence on karate can be traced back to the 1920s and 1930s in Japan. During this time, Western sports such as boxing and wrestling were introduced to Japan, and Japanese martial arts schools began to incorporate elements of these sports into their training. One of the first Japanese martial artists to experiment with boxing was Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan karate. Funakoshi believed that the traditional techniques of karate were too rigid and impractical for real combat, and so he began to incorporate boxing footwork and punching techniques into his training. Over time, other karate masters followed Funakoshi's lead and started to incorporate boxing techniques into their own styles. This led to the development of hybrid styles such as Kyokushin karate, which emphasizes strong punches and kicks and is known for its full-contact sparring matches. Boxing also influenced the way karate was taught and practiced. In traditional karate schools, students would often practice katas (pre-arranged sequences of movements) in a rigid and prescribed manner. However, the influence of boxing led to a more practical and realistic approach to training, with emphasis placed on sparring and free-form drills. Today, boxing and karate are still intertwined, with many karate practitioners studying boxing as an adjunct to their training. The combination of these two disciplines can produce incredibly effective fighters, as seen in the rise of MMA and other combat sports that incorporate elements of both boxing and karate.

    • @vincentestrade1283
      @vincentestrade1283 Рік тому

      @irishmaninokinawa5268 yes I agree with the full-contact aspect. I believe it should at least be part of the training session. Simply from a self-defence perspective, I you don't know how it feels to receive a punch/kick full force, you won't be able to cope with this stress factor in a real life situation. I train shorin-ryu and at the end of each training session, we do full-contact sparring in Kyokushin rules.

    why do you drop your hand when kicking? Isn't it better to keep it up in case it's needed?

    • @irishmaninokinawa5268
      @irishmaninokinawa5268 Рік тому

      Well, as a full contact karate fighter the style of Uechi-Ryū in Okinawa, the birth place of karate, I like to drop my hand of the side I am kicking during a low roundhouse kick for a couple of reasons. First, lowering the hand helps to create a better balance and stability while executing a powerful lowkick. It ensures that the body remains grounded and centered throughout the movement. Secondly, it's all about speed and efficiency. By dropping the hand, I can generate more power and momentum from the hip rotation, allowing for a quicker and more effective strike. It's all about optimizing my technique and making every move count. I open up with a jab and straight punch, before going for a low kick that is uncomfortable. Forcing my opponent to want to cover and block there legs. So, you see, there's always a method to the madness in martial arts. It's quite fascinating, isn't it?
