2020 Build Wrap Up
Presented here are my completed builds for 2020.
The ICM Moskvich in 1/35th was first out of the gate. The suspension parts were finnicky but the build was generally enjoyable. The car has all the engine detail as well as interior. I put it on a base made from a leftover Xmas chocolate container!
The ICM MIG-25BM in 1/48th was next. As I had built the Kittyhawk kit, I was anxious to compare the two. No surprise- the ICM kit wins on all levels. The nose/fuselage join gave me some problems, but generally I was happy with the kit. I decided to model it gear up with LED lights in the exhaust to give it some flavor. The battery is hidden in the (removable) centerline fuel tank. The base took some engineering as I had to 3d print the receptacles for the plexiglass tubes. They turned out great- I will do this again! The base was going to resemble terrain, but I think this was a failure.
The Eduard Bf-109 E3 in 1/32nd was next. This is an older Eduard kit and I was a little disappointed in some of the engineering choices and the molding. I made up my own stencils for the larger markings (as I usually do) and I found a picture of 116 in the great “German Eagles in Spanish Skies: The Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Service with the Legion Condor During the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39” book. I used this image for the base.
Hasegawa’s JU87-G2 in 1/32nd was my next kit. I threw a bunch of Eduard aftermarket in as well as some metal barrels. I modelled this after a very late war machine with winter whitewash over the green camouflage. The base is not my best effort. I waited until we finally had some snow (last week?) to take some pictures and it really sets the model off.
ICM’s B-26B-50 in 1/48th was next. These are great kits and fall together. The nose gave me some problems, but that is not uncommon. For the base, I painstakingly printed “Marston Mat” and glued each piece down one at a time. It was painstaking, but the base looks really good.
The Tamiya P-51 in 1/32nd is a great kit. This was a bit of a disaster for me as I wired up an electric engine and the nav lights. Somewhere along the way, something came unattached and when it was painted and ready to put on the base nothing worked! I modelled it off a local training squadron (City of Hamilton). The base is an aerial shot of the CYHM airport.
The Model Collect E-50 in 1/35th scale is a good kit. Although the camo is similar to the MIG25, I applied it differently and was still not 100% satisfied with the results. The kit tracks and suspension fought me and thus far, I have not built a base for this one.
Tamiya’s T-55 is an absolute classic kit. I had some Fruil tracks for it and decided to wreck it to the best of my abilities. The thrown track makes this build for me and I have definitely caught the knocked-out tank bug. There will be more…
This year, I went on a bit of a bender with Vietnam era 1/48th kits. Trumpeter makes a lot of these, so the F-100 was my first build. This is such a cool airplane up close that I had to build it first. Some of the Vietnam machines were overpainted with the SEA camouflage and this was to be my first experiment with that camo. Then I saw the picture that starts the series in the video and I knew I had to build a heavily weathered metallic/grey finish. The base is an aerial shot from the Central Highlands in Vietnam. I also made up my own 500 lb napalm bombs for this machine as none were included in the kit.
The new tool Tamiya KV1 in 1/35th was next. It fell together and was to be built out of the box. However, I couldn’t help but replace the fenders and add some “stuff”. The base was to be and urban street scene, but I went overboard with the dust effects and all the detail was lost under coats of grout/plaster and mud.
The last build in the video is an Academy Sheridan hull with a Miniart T-44 turret in 1/35th. A few years ago, I robbed the Sheridan turret and put it on a M41 Bulldog hull to make a T-49 (World of Tanks). I was looking for a quick Halloween build and decided to merge the T-44 turret with the leftover Sheridan hull. It fit perfectly (ish). I was not happy with the rubber band tracks in this kit, but they still have not disintegrated! The Sheridan hull was painted Aluminum and the T-44 turret was based with a rusty brown. The whole thing was overcoated with fluorescent green/orange and brown then chipped. No base yet for this thing.
In Nov/Dec I have been building the Hobbyboss B-24D in 1/32nd. The initial assembly was fast, but the interior has been slow. It is generally together now and needs finishing.
Many of my builds this year had a Corona Virus flavor. Let’s hope the goofiness is put behind us in 2021!
Happy New Year.

Kitty Hawk MH-60L Black Hawk
Переглядів 8 тис.4 роки тому
This is a difficult build and not for beginners or those with heart problems. Kitty Hawk has a reputation for tough builds and this is no exception. While I like the final result and the kit met my goals, it suffers from engineering flaws and errors. The kit is expensive and can only be recommended if you must have a 1/35 scale Black Hawk. My goal here was to model a Somalia era Black Hawk (199...

Meng Komet unbox and build. I enjoyed this build, however (as usual) mistakes were made. The kit is meant to be assembled with the engine/fuel tank combo but I left these out. Mission Model paints, vinyl masks, metal antennae and Flory clay wash.

How did you paint the deck with steel and black non slip? Just mask it?

As with the Hobby Boss 1:32nd-scale kit of the Consolidated B-24D Liberator USAAF Heavy Bomber, I very much want to watch your video; I had the Academy 1:48th-scale kit of the Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk U.S. Army Utility Helicopter . . . (that is a long story! :( SMH). As before, the bright white screen makes my eyes' too photosensitive to do so.

That is, if I buy one of these expensive 1/35 scale MH-60L Kidults. Fuel tanks on the left and right sides centered on the fuselage are standard, and the "Wolfpack Conversion Kit" is modeled with plastic model parts at 1/35 scale using a modeling program called 'Cinema 4D'. The modeled data is printed as plastic model parts using a 3D printer. We plan to assemble and color the printed plastic model parts and install them on the left and right sides of this aircraft! 4:31

But is it appropriate to color using lacquer paint and acrylic paint alternately? 3:14

If I were to assemble this model! I made a wolf pack conversion kit and installed it on the left and right sides of the fuselage, and I would like to paint the 'lace [striped expression]' with an airbrush using the Korean 119 helicopter version! 4:07

119 If you want to express it as a helicopter. The fuselage was first airbrushed white, and when the white paint dried, masking tape was applied. Then, stripes [lace] were painted on the top and bottom of the fuselage with red paint. Once the paint was dry, additional masking tape was applied to the top. After painting the stripes with yellow paint, you can express it as a 119 helicopter! 4:45

First of all, I really liked your video/music presentation. The high points covered with text notes is a good idea as well. Stating what worked for after-market and what didn’t was helpful as well. Weathering on this desert warrior was very nice on final product. So I’m dying to know, where and how did you display it? I bet the wife wanted it in the living room Im guessing? 😎 I would love to do this kit but just don’t know how I’d display it!

Drool! Drool! Drool! Oh, how I would love to build several. I would convert one to a PB4Y-1 low over a stormy, wind-tossed North Atlantic, depth-charging something deep below. Another an all-aluminium B-24J or M. Next, a conversion to a PB4Y-2 "Privateer".

The stubby parts for the exterior is what you would use if you're wanting to build a spec ops troop carrier with the rope attached to the roof of the helicopter, and there's even parts for the Auxiliary Fuel Tank... I'm still focusing on the front cockpit and rear cabin for now, but I'm planning on having to do a lot of work to fix whatever problems that I run into??? I'm hearing all kinds of problems with the Kitty Hawk helicopter kits and I'm hoping for someone to buy their molds and improve in them for us helicopter modelers????

If you don't mind inadvertently knocking out your front teeth or spilling all the paint jars on your work bench, you can go ahead and install the looooooooong wings on this beast like the instructions say. If you manage this, you'll develop Popeye-like forearms when you hold the model for painting. I chose to split the support strut that pokes out of the fuselage slots, and then attached the wings to each half like the instructions say. But I also cut up a number of large sprue logs and super-glued them into one side of the wing so they protrude past the cut and are long enough to fit into the other wing's strut shelf. Since I will not be worried about the interior because all will be closed up and hidden by the bomb bay doors, the person who will receive this can take some rapid-curing epoxy and mate the wings together and not mess up the finish. But the 800-lb. gorilla in the room no one talks about his how and where to lay in 300, that's THREE HUNDRED grams of weight so this bird doesn't sit on its tail.

300g is over 10 ounces! I recommend platinum--it is heavier than gold! (You would not require the 800-lb gorilla, though!)

And mention of the Wings brings up the kit's MAJOR issue. The VERY DISTINCTIVE Davis Airofoil (A MAJOR feature of all B24s) is completely ABSENT in the kit. If you look at the video and pause it at 1:34 you will see that the upper wing has a straight line from the peak thickness to the rear edge. (And it not just the drawing in the instruction - the kit part matches).THAT is NOT a Davis High Lift Airfoil. The Davis Airfoil has a hollowed out profile from the peak thickness back to the trailing edge. The Mongram 1/48 B24 kit has this correct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davis_wing & airfoiltools.com/airfoil/details?airfoil=davis-corrected-il . It is not a huge and obvious "hollow", but HOW did Hobby Boss miss it so completely. I opened the kit in the shop on its release and spotted this problem immediately. (It has been commented that HB pantographed the Monogram kit (Compare their turret moldings to the Monogram ones - the layout and engineering is very similar.) Monogram got it right, so how did HB miss it? And on the subject of the turrets - HB have, in their B-24J kit, reversed the framework/glass layout on the nose turret - and would have you paint the glasswork and leave the metal framework clear....WTF? FWIW, I have the 1/32 HKM B17 kits and Lancaster kits but the HB B-24 is a no go for me unless it gets fixed, or someone produces a correction set that doesn't cost more than the kit.

Looks great! Currently working on this kit. Did you figure a way to attach the wings after painting? That's one flaw I see with the kit. Was hoping to assemble and paint the wings separately from the fuselage.

I agree 100%, however I did this in a video a while back and someone came on telling me that the specific gravity of the paint and thinners are different, so my method was inaccurate!!! I chose not to reply to that one.........................
