On the topic of injecting liberal ideas into stories (I forget how you word it), I think I'd agree with you that a show, book, or movie having them only bothers me when they're being forced into the story. Either because the original source does not have them or because it's so poorly added in that you're taken out of the story by it. The Wheel of Time show is a great example. They flat out say they want to empower the female characters because <insert reason> (there are many). And it pisses me off because I'm like, "HAVE YOU EVEN READ THE BOOKS?!?!?!?!?!? THOSE WOMEN ARE ALL FUCKING AWESOME." And instead we get screwing in the main room of the inn and all the other crap that doesn't belong (and frankly makes the women seem worse than they actually are.

Interesting point on Sauron's manipulation. It makes me feel like the writers wrote his manipulation tactics to be as they understand manipulation. a.k.a. to be what would have effectively manipulated themselves or perhaps, more precisely, what would be effective manipulation in the Hollywood/entertainment sphere. (MORE POWER!!! *said in the voice of Emperor Palpatine*) They, as you pointed out, should have written it as what would have manipulated a fundamentally good and earnest person. It might be a similar case as the idea that a character can only be as intelligent as it's author. The writers wrote "manipulation" as they understand it and, as you also point out, they've failed to understand the fundamental natures of specific characters and the greater nature of Tolkien's works.

I'm not sure the lesser angels (the Maiar) were creations of the greater angels (the Valar)... if I recall correctly, they were all manifest thoughts of God (Illúvatar), only that some of the Maiar aligned themselves with certain Valar. Sauron believing in his own twisted way that total domination over Middle-Earth would be a good thing isn't the worst thing that they did, in my opinion. Even in Tolkien, his goal isn't really the destruction of, but the iron-fisted control over Middle-Earth. That said, totally agree with all the rest, it all fell apart very quickly 😅

Two points i'd like to add: Firstly, on the "great mystery" behind the misuse of IPs, another factor is that certain investors want the largest audience for "the message" possible. They believe that by controlling culture, they can control the population. That's more important to them than potentially upsetting us lowly nerds, even if it destroys entire franchises along the way. So long as a certain portion of the audience falls in line, mission accomplished. Certainly not the sole reason behind the changes, but that's probably the largest reason why the money lost doesn't matter. Secondly, on the Fallout tv show, while I'll agree that there was a lot of love for the franchise, i'd add the caveat that it was love for Bethesda's games solely. It contradicts so much from 1, 2, and New Vegas (games Bethesda had nothing to do with, and those still lauded as the best written of the series), that I can only chalk it up to spitefulness. Well, that's my soapbox rant over. Til the next one, and thanks again!

The idea that they didn't have access to the "source material" is a cop out-- there is enough material in the Appendices to the LotR to make the characters and create the story connections between those characters ...

I like season 2. The changes don't bother me that much because it's a character driven story. The characters feel like who they are and I get to hang out with them again. I still watch it once a month at least. Everything is fine. Fantasy fans are so hard to please it's a wonder that show makers even try.

The books also initially left a lot of the nuances of the One Power unexplained. Really, the first two books are a bit of a mess. feels like the whole thing was supposed to be a trilogy and was rush cut to open up for a longer series.
