    A Link to the Past was one of the first games I was ever obsessed with. I recall watching some family members play it back in 1992, when I was four. I attempted it myself not long after, but this was before I'd learned to read, so I'd have my mom come in and read some of the dialogue boxes when they came up, though I wouldn't really have any idea what they were talking about. I can't recall the first time I beat the game, but I do know I'd completed it several times before getting a Game Boy Pocket and Link's Awakening in '96, and finally playing Ocarina of Time in '99.

    @10:15 -- characters who died during the story are returned to life. Not only Link's uncle (killed by one of the enchanted knights), but the flute-playing boy (his shade appeared in the same spot in the light world; he ultimately changed from a deer to a tree sapling), the king (he was killed and replaced by Aghanim in the title's cutscene), the bedridden kid (he gives you his bug-catching net after evil energy from Death Mountain makes him sick), the Sanctuary Priest (killed by the goons who recaptured Zelda), and one of the faerie queens (specifically the fat one sealed in the pyramid who gives you the Silver Arrows and Golden Master Sword).

    I still remember that pokemon Gen 1 rival run we did. We battled after every in game rival point, stayed neck and neck to each gym, then had one big final battle after the elite four. I had you beat for the most part as we went along, but you took the crown in the end. The mental games we played with each other when we fought were pretty epic 😅. So, the point about Agahnim being Ganon's alterego has been a point of contention in the fanbase for _literal decades._ Even the Japanese script only gives hints; the term used there is "Bunshin," which can mean "Avatar" or "Clone," or even refer to another personality. I think seeing Agahnim as the prototype for Phantom Ganon (at least in terms of game development) is a fairly accurate conclusion, regardless of whatever the developers actually meant at the time.

      @@Livvvid Going by the second video in your description, my guess is that this player was using glitches to somehow fight Agahnim without fighting the Light World bosses; he's got three hearts when the game would normally force you to have a minimum of six. In such a case, it might be possible to fight and defeat Agahnim without the mirror or the moon pearl, and that could indeed soft lock the game.

    • @Livvvid
      @Livvvid Місяць тому

      This was from 2023 and as far as I remember the scenario, I beat the 3 bosses but failed to get the moon pearl. When I was on gannons tower I don't even remember being able to leave the tower itself let alone travel around like he in the video i used. I had the mirror but nowhere to utilize it. I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how to leave the tower. I remember looking it up back then and an old forum post seemed to verify my issue. But now that I'm thinking about it maybe I just didnt realize I could hop down the platforms like the person from the video I used? I'm half tempted to just do another playthrough and do this myself because I want to see what I was failing to understand the first time.

    Second post to stroke the algorithms...Glad you touched on the music. In the summer months i part time as a sound engineer apprentice, and since I started doing that I have had a whole new appreciation for music and what it is trying to evoke in the listener, especially in games. A few months ago, i stumbled upon a channel where a guy does rock/metal covers of older games' songs and soundtracks, and he does a pretty dang good job at it. IIRC he has one cover of the dark world music from A Link to the Past. (As well as some Donkey Kong Country tracks 😉) Now, i have zero affiliation with the guy and my intention is not to advertise another channel on here, but for anyone interested in some well done musical covers of old school video game sound tracks, i recommend searching for guitarwanker90 on youtube.

    Western RPGS (and this is why I prefer them more over JRPGs) your a blank slate and asked what do you want to be. JRPs you play as a character with history and backstory. And even when a Western RPG does have you be a "pre-made" character, you can still choose what to to and how to play them, like with KOTOR. Bethesda is the king of "Be whoever you want", in Fallouts I love playing as a charismatic mercenary, hell even with Starfield playing as a Bounty Hunter was awesome. Hell, that's why I never understood the whole "Bethesda does not understood Role Playing". They do, they just ask you what do YOU want to be, and give you the tools in the setting to be it. I do hope im not coming off as an asshole.

    • @Livvvid
      @Livvvid Місяць тому

      @aaronlaughter6471 not an asshole at all. I actually agree with you. I'm just saying if you are gonna give me a blank slate but then have a story that sets me up to be someone extremely important AND from the moment I have player control I'm told the fate of the world or a family members fate is solely on me, it defeats the purpose of blank slate/open world design. I'm fine if a JRPG gives me an established character that is tied to a story. The burden is no longer on me to link the dots. My motivation is established, there may be player freedom but such that it would still make sense for the character. Thank you for the comment!

    The manual says that Manky Kongs were "Kong rejects" and people believe they were exiled from the family and want revenge so they help K. Rule. I think they are just a homage to the original Donkey Kong arcade, where Donkey Sr. (Cranky Kong) would throw barrels at Jumpman (Mario). This game is a classic. The sequel improves on it in every way. I don't remember grinding for balloons, but did remember seeing the game over screen a lot. I have to play all of these games with "alternate start" mods to counter the "urgency" that you discuss. I love playing as a nobody in games, I'm so tired of "you're the chosen one", or "here's this massive task for you" right off the bat. For example in the Skyrim alternate start mod, you can start the game as a hunter, spawning in a random shack in the woods. Or a miner, waking up on a bedroll in dilapidated cave. This is much more interesting to me, I'm able to craft much more interesting characters this way, and ignore any main quests, focusing solely on content I think this specific character would tackle. But yeah, great vid. I think about this every time I play one of their games, so it's nice to know others feel the same!

    • @Livvvid
      @Livvvid Місяць тому

      @kebshot you get what I'm saying exactly. The chosen one schtick is so over used. And the funny part is, I'm not against story with urgency but the design of these games directly conflicts with that. I'm fine if a game is linear with a great story that feels urgent and past paced. But it won't also tell me the core gameplay will be exploration, discovery, and freedom. Thank you for the kind words and compliment!

    Whats funny is i had just set up my Switch for some little nephews who are visiting, and saw both LoZ: OoT, and Majoras Mask on the N64 emulator. I have beaten OoT, but never beat MM. Was just thinking of going for it again. After the nephews go back to my sisters all spoiled and sugared up 🤣

      I kinda skipped over the SNES generation of games growing up. Went from the Sega Genesis to the PSOne. So I have a few games I regret not playing as a kid from that. FF6, Chrono Trigger, and LoZ: Links Awakening, to name some of the bigger ones. Tho tbh, I have found myself not having as much of an interest in JRPGs as much as I did in my youth.

    I remember my aunt having this game close to when it came out. That legendary soundtrack always takes me back. But, my first console was either the Atari or NES. We had a Commadore, too, at some point. Our NES collection was up to ~120 games. My dad may even still have one of our two NES consoles and the first two Zelda games. I need to look into that so I can play 'em again. Anyway... Cool idea for a series. I wonder what other classics you've missed. Only a few suggestions come to mind at the moment, Brave Fencer Musashi, Pokemon Puzzle League (a friend and I were pros at this) and Conker's Bad Fur Day (I get a feeling you likely played this one).

      Hey Deet thanks for the comment. I've missed a lot man. The series is hopefully entertaining, but it will also be a fun way to finally start playing those games. Ooooo Puzzle league and Conker's Bad Fur Day come to mind. I actually never played conkers and never even heard about it when it was out. I only heard about it a few years later in middle school when someone told me about its humor and I was like "There is no way that game existed on the n64" and then I looked and couldn't believe it lol. If you had to pick one for me to do, which would you like. Pokemon Puzzle or Conkers? (I'll look into fencer, never heard of it).

      @@Livvvid If I had to pick, absolutely had to pick, it would be Conker, original not remaster. Remaster took some of the charm out. Also the beach minigame, I think. But I do want to mention one interesting tidbit on Puzzle League. When you face off against Bruno of the Elite Four, the audio says, "I sensed you'd come." while the text starts something like, "Huh.....you startled me!?" Nothing like two quick players just bombing each other with junk blocks like Tetris. Your Pokemon just repeatedly screaming their names back and forth. Now I'm remembering Perfect Dark, Goldeneye (of course), NwO vs WCW Revenge, Harvest Moon (though I preferred Back to Nature on the PS1)

      Well luckily for you Deet I plan on playing all sorts of games like those lol. I want it to be general. Whatever I feel like and whatever subs are interested in seeing, any console or era.
