Crust Romancuer Build Video | Dream Build | 650B | Dynamo light | 2x Wide Range
This is a bike I have wanted to make for some time, I dreamt it up on a bike ride with my friend Jack. It was completed last year in June 2021.
Some of its highlights include-
Shimano Dura-Ace 7800 Derailleurs
Velocity Blunt SS/ Chris King Wheelset
650B x 48 Rene Herse Switchback Hill Tires
Rene Herse Rando Handlebars
Nitto Stem and Seat post
Paul Klamper Disc Brakes
SON Dynamo Hub and Light
White Industries 2x Crankset
Retroshift Shifter
Monoblock 10s Cassette (11-32)
I, unfortunately, did not shoot the bike right after it was completed I went out and rode it and then forgot to video it for some time.
After about 1000 miles of riding the only issues I had was
the bartape slipping which can be fixed with some double-sided tape and having no bag yet for the back, so I took off the Carridice Bagman support in the mean time. I as well had to double wrap the rims with wider tape after about a month of riding due to the tire pressure slowly dropping over a week. This is when the last shots were filmed. It has been an awesome bike, well balanced, and capable.

Build Progress over a weekend. Bed was shortened weekend previously by myself.
I've watched a lot of build videos. I've never seen anyone polishing hubs and chainrings 😍
Stunning... both your talent and your build!
Sick, do the Bombora next! 🙂↕️
So cool
24/7 live stream of John Tapping poorly prepped for paint threading..... tune in now and every day all day long :P
is it necessary then to take out the bearings to de-anodize the hubs?>
Kinda of a pain, but I would say yes, this is the best practice.
12:44 I was obsessed with that skee mask album for a long time. Also I’m wondering if you have any problems running the hope rotors with the klampers…I’ve ordered parts and am about to start building a wheel set
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Fantastic job and to take the time to video it, thank you. The one thing I am not sure on was after cleaning the chain and it goes into the crockpot and ice bath? Was that a wax and if so what kind?
Gorgeous
Now, this bike is too nice for riding outside.
Somebody has a lot of money and they’ve spent it wisely. That’s a lifetime investment right there. Congratulations on the build. So nice to watch.
I stripped all the Phillips screws besides the ones covered by the crankshaft. Those ones I hammered the bit in and they came out like nothing. The stripped ones I hammered in a torx bit and some unscrewed by hand just the hammer made them lose up. So thanks for that tip.
Yo this is the gayest build I’ve seen in my life.
where did you get the Retroshift shifters?? I can't find them anywhere!
The frame the fork the geometry crankset, !! video speaks for itself, in the added touch at the end, let me just create a custom bag for this build really nice!
Sir..did you remove the distributor socket before crank the engine? And how to torque it back after your job done?
Sweet build man. This is a dream bike for me. Is it standard for braze-ons to come un-tapped like that on a new frame? Never bought a new frame so just curious 😅
They are tapped but often not perfect and have paint/clear other debris. I just ran a tap through to clean the threads. Not essential but a step I always take!
BEWARE of ordering anything from Wit's End!! I sent Joey $6000 for a turbo kit 25 months ago. He has refused to communicate with me for 12 months and has kept my money after multiple refund requests. This order was the worst decision of my life. Joey is a dishonest thief as there are at least 15 others in my same situation, waiting with no communication. If you are thinking of ordering from Wit's End, reconsider and drive on. Joey should never be a business man.
clean build, very well done!
Hey John, what is the tool you used for thread chasing?
wow...super nice!
ben, is that a long cage dura ace r/d or did you splice a cage from a different shimano r/d?
Wonderful
I just got the same bike! The color is so amazing in person. Where did you get the bolts to fill all the holes?
Beautiful build--wonderful attention to detail! Any tricks/tips for mounting the light on the front rack?
That is real.👍👍I have those same Gevenalle shifters on my cyclocross bike and love them. They are so fast and work great.
That is a beautiful bike!
Hi, I am fairly new on the whole building bikes world. I was wondering what do you add to the M4 screws at the beginning of the video. Is it grease? Sealing to prevent water from entering in the frame?
that is some build. what price for a bike and build like that. genius at work i love it.
When you busted out the jars and the instant pot I knew this build was going to be perfection!
hold this one close to the vest the longer you have it the more miles you put on it the more valuable it becomes
Love it!
How did you make rear derailleur long cage?
Why the front derailleur shifter on the downtube?
Yeah that and the single bottle cage didn't make sense to me. I get two downtube shifters for full retro vibes, but I don't get half and half. But to each their own. Its still a lovely build otherwise, I just don't get the form or function of those choices.
beautiful build!
How are you liking the bike? Still good? Any regrets building wise?
Crust Rivendelleur. Stunning build. 👍
can you upload a pattern for the bag to wetransfer? you could put it in the description. I see a few others have been asking for it too.
Here is the basic pattern for the bag, you can scale to whatever size you want. Not a perfect pattern but it will get you started! docs.google.com/document/d/19eVB-0idXpy2-AkmspfJVpqn9Be3vjof3Ec8HjmYe7g/edit?usp=sharing
Could you share any details on how you routed the dynamo cable? I have a 2022 Romanceur with a dynamo cable port on the fork leg, and can't for the life of me work out how to use it
Wonderful build, I really loved it. One think that keept from being perfenct is the fact that you failed to align the big chain ring wih the crank arm, it hurt my eye. 😀
Amazing Bike! Love the front bag. Can you share the bag template? Thank you.
Lovely build. Personally would have more seatpost exposed. So different frame shape. However I appreciate this is based on a particular style and period in bike design history.
is there a negative effective if the seatpost is that low?
@@mangpots7284 simply the style of bike. Over history frame styles change. In the 1960’s was the fashion to have large frames and small amount of seatpost exposed. Then over time has become the trend to have lots of seatpost exposed and more compact frame with sloping top tube. Seat height from pedals to seat the same..seat tube shorter.
@@felixjackson2670 Thanks for the reply.
What a bike. It has all the components you can dream off. It must be so nice to ride, beautiful!
Did you strip the paint from the white industries chain rings? How'd you do it?
Impeccable build John. Like others said the attention to detail and professionalism when building this great machine is a joy to watch. I don't know if it's your own bike but if so, enjoy the miles. Cheers from the Netherlands
I try to ride it as much as I can! Have a good one, thank you.
YOUR ON TO SOMETHING GOOD..................................bravo
Any desire to add mudguards/fenders? Would look smart with some honjos.
Yes I have some under my bed and a rear Son dynamo light I need to install
Your work is to perfect brother. If I'm the owner of this bike I'm not going to ride it. I will park beside my bed..🤭🤗
These bikes are basically a 1990's trek 700? $100 on craigslist for a complete bike. Maybe another $200 if you want to make the cockpit better.
good luck trying to find one Cowboy
