You're doing good work. As a long term modelling hobbiest I'm rather sick of every Warhammer dweeb telling me how wonderful Games Workshop paints are. They are 🐕💩 compared to Gunze Sangyo or even Tamiya acrylics. Let alone when you go to oils or enamels. I don't like enamels myself but I could see artist's oils working. The drying time must be horrendous though 🤔
Thank you. Drying time with artist oils, is not that bad. I use a bit of thinner and stretch them quite thinly, that makes for quick drying times as well.
Silly question then: are there better alternatives that dont break the bank?
Depends on what you need. If you need to film miniature painting, then no - not in my opinion. You'll need a proper 4k camera for this. If you just need to film your palette or face, then a webcam can make a lot of sense.
Lovely man. Really interesting to see how similarly we work and where we diverge! Keep up the exploration bud!
Im just starting out with oils. Having some difficulty at times as the process is very different but im really enjoying it
It’s difficult to start but super worth it! Keep at it!
@NotSureWhatsHappening73 Thanks. It takes a bit of getting used to. I had real issues with getting the paint adhering to previous layers but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it now
Glad to see more content about painting minis with oils.
That was incredible and then this silver. Mind blown completely
Awesome mate ! I love oils ! Its hard for me to go back to acrylics.
You and me both!
That nmm is insane!
I just finished the introductory set and am waiting for glue to build the sword brethren, any paint i need for them?
I will do a black templar guide eventually. But until that's ready, i would use chromatic black and some ultramarine blue (or egyptian violet) to add some temperature to the black as well as some hansa yellow in the lights. Stay tuned for a dedicated video on this 🤟
@@Watchpaintdry_minis Thanks👍
Beautiful paintjob, excellent video, and I just want to say how much I love that head positioning, it really reminds me of RT and 2nd Edition character poses
Looks great!
Excell3nt video. Thx. What kind of brushes do you use.
Thanks! I use rosemary and co series 33 for acrylics. Once the tip wears off, i'll use these for oils. I also like the green flat brushes from da vinci they're cheap and good for the oil painting IMO.
@@Watchpaintdry_minis do you know a good shop where I can get them from germany? Or do you buy straight from the uk?
Amazing work
Thanks a lot 😊 theres a full video on this painting available on my channel as well as an extended edit on my Patreon if you're interested
Wow! I love how you use oils!
I would like to see some work on some infinity models.
I don't have any of those on hand but I will keep that in mind! Thanks for watching.
Amazing work, both on the painting and explaining
Thank you very much!
Amazing colors ❤
Thank you 🤗
That's gorgeous
Thank you! There's a full video off the painting on my channel and an extended lesson on Patreon if you're interested 😊
When you say oriental blue and carbon black for the initial sketching around the neck, what paint line did you use? I recognize I can use Golden SoFlat Payne’s grey or something along those lines, but I like knowing what paints others use…might be something I’d be interested in trying myself. Thanks!
Oriental blue is from schmincke and carbon black is from kimera. I don't use the schmincke colors too often because of their shiny finish but there are some fantastic paints among the schmincke primacryl line. Golden soflat is also very good in my experience!
I think you need some more lights mate 😉
I appreciate that you showed your experiments that didn't work: the green and red armors.
That's insane. Just unbelievable
Great video as always ✨✨
Great video mate! I have to try that out in the future!
You should! Let me know how it goes!
Couldn't see the final model because of your pop ups
Thanks for letting me know. I will disable that!
Amazing results! I'm definitely going to try the fabric style on my next cloak. Thanks so much.
Awesome content. Keep it up. These are some of the better videos I’ve seen

If you use a smaller stubbier flat brush you'll be able to focus more on the edges when blending the oils.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check that out!
When you were working on the gold I am not sure I caught how you were using the Thalo green. Was that mixed into the burnt umber? I recently watched a tutorial from Khimera where they were doing NMM Gold and used green gold washed over it near the end of the process. Yours is a very sharp look. Keep up the great work
I totally understand how you didn't catch that. I had the green on the palette but ended up not using it on the model. The phthalo green with indian yellow very quickly makes a grass-green that's way too saturated for the gold parts. Using the burnt umber is much better in my opinion.
This was just amazing. Can't wait to try this out
You should also try glazing with transparent pigment oils. This is good for adding saturation and refining the blending.
Absolutely! I really love the transparent oxides
Nice! I was just trying this exact thing out
I see that you, like me have been burned by Patrick Rothfuss and his incomplete trilogy.
Oh yes. I have found some comfort in reading malazan now, though 😅
So can this be done with acrylic in the tubes ?
Not really to the same extent. The acrylics dont mix in quite the same way. Oils can be super thin and still quite vibrant sort of like acrylic inks. Heavy body acrylics can be used for some wet blending techniques but not on the entire model at once like i use the oils here.
Spira 28mm dwarf!
Cool video! Elsker oil paints og bruger dem selv - meget bedre end acrylic imo
Thanks alot!
2:25 Is this a Golden SoFlat paint in a different bottle? If so, could you please tell me from where you got the bottle?
It is! I just transferred the paint to a 60ml dropper bottle from amazon. Nothing special, but it's nice for utility
SoFlat 2oz bottles use 38-400 threaded caps, so if you buy dispenser caps with those threads online you can easily dispense without needing to transfer bottles!
Brilliant! I’m looking forward to giving it a try! Even though the SoFlats are not in squeezable bottles, a dispenser cap should be able to let out the few drops of paint we need as mini painters. Thank you!
Got the dispenser caps. They work like a charm. The SoFlats containers have a small bit of flex in them, so you can squeeze out a few drops. Thanks for the tip, @pbkobold!
Love the final results, took me years to try out oil washes and now I almost use them exclusively for all my builds. Slowly trying out AK's Abteilung 502 oil range (20ml tubes) specially for non metallic metal, oils give such a smooth blending effect and the longer drying time is perfect.
Looks great; but I must've missed the easy part :)
What a cool way to talk about the hobby - really inspiring storytelling ! And looking forward to getting the army together 🎉 Thank you 🤗
Wonderful narrative combined with painting instructional. 👍Really enjoyed that!
You should have filmed this video in front of the cupboard filled with trophies.

I just wanted to clarify two terms that i glossed over in the video and didn't manage to explain correctly: Hue is the attribute that defines the basic color family or type, such as red, green, blue, etc. It’s essentially the color's position on the color wheel and is associated with the dominant wavelength of the light that the color reflects or emits. Hue is what we usually think of when we ask, “What color is this?” Chroma refers to the intensity or purity of a color. It describes how vivid, rich, or saturated the color appears. High chroma means a color is vivid and strong, while low chroma colors are muted, washed out, or closer to gray. Chroma doesn’t affect the hue but changes how pure the color looks-whether it’s a bright red or a more subdued red, for example.
Very nice showcasing how to paint with oils. I also like your soothing voice tbh. Hope you'll do more of those. Like how to work with some specific colors (red in particular) whose transparency makes it difficult for me.
I wish I had friends so that I can recommend them this video
Great summary of the basics of color theory!
Love your content! Thanks!
