It's hilarious just how uncomfortable this old woman is with the idea of the Irish language. She repeatedly called it a dead language but but offers up now explanation that the reason why the language is dying is because of British colonization and british oppression of Irish culture.

Hi, thank you for listening to the review and for your feedback, I hope you enjoyed the film and the way it is showing people like me that Irish is not a dead language but is finding new means of expression and pushing back those preconceptions of how the Irish language is used in a modern Ireland. It’s an Irish film that was the whole point. The point of the film is the Irish language is not dead but needs to be spoken by young people in a way they can relate. The film was funded by both the Republic and screen Ireland northern Ireland. It’s the name of the language just is Irish or Gaeilge not Gaelic

Hello, thank you for watching our review, we really appreciate any feedback we get. I'll use Irish to describe the language from now on, it's important to get that sort of thing right. We hope you enjoyed the film and hearing the language used in such a vibrant way. Thanks again from Sharon & the team at Netflix Vs Cinema.

Big fan of Dune and Denis Villeneuve here. I think you made a mistake by dismissing Dune 1's cinema profits because the movie was released simultaneously on HBO max, so many people watched it online instead of at the cinema. Because of my taste i loved the first movie. The way it's soundtrack created mood reminded me of the Bege Gesserit's linguistic skills and how Herbert wrote about the power of linguistics. My mom is a polyglot and has mastery of what the real world 'voice' would be. I agree with most of your critisizm of Dune 2. Audiences were starved for a good, high budget movie. The marketing campaign was really good and the star-filled cast applied their interview training well. I also didn't like some of the changes from the books but i liked how they fit into the rest of the movies. I agree that Dune is the biggest TV series fail(ignoring the older series) because they made 2 movies instead. I really hope the movies will go down in history as equal to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. I would also accept it being called equal to 2001 A Space Odyssey. Cheers!

Thanks for getting in touch, main host Tosin here. Re: HBO Max, we only got it in Cinemas in the UK I think. Do not speak for the other three (they do that for themselves on the Podcast) and as impressive a cinematic feat as they are, visuals, music, everything, I'm that idiot (as you've heard) that bemoans how much the story makes better sense without the bits that they cut out (still wonder how anyone who hasn't read the books gets the first film). I still think the bit where they try and find the traitor in the first book is biggest tension filled film sequence/TV episode we've lost due to adaptation in the last decade. Also sad that Villeneuve doesn't believe in extended cuts, I'd happily watch a 5 hour cut of both films. But hey, hang around listen to a few more episodes, and please continue to tell us what you think.

I thought this was a bummer of a way to end the DCEU. Not only was it kinda boring but I thought the acting and dialogue was just bad! They also ruined Black Manta by adding that ridiculous “bigger threat” over his motivations. I did not like this one very much at all, unfortunately. There were quite a few animated Asterix films, THOUGH I think the best looking one that was still hand drawn was the most recent "Asterix and the Vikings", Though I do feel the story was a bit muddled compared to this one. I don't know, did he know about the Maime and Emmitt Till story? The was the main thing. Maime presented her son's mutinlated body to the world and the jumped🤔 off the the civil rights movement. Now this is 1955 in the Southern U.S. in which KKK ruled. I just don't know NO this is not a Batman or a Black Panther movie.

Hi Terrance, thanks for getting in touch. This is Tosin, the Host of the podcast. The thing I love about films like this is that they bring stories to people who would otherwise never had heard of them. For instance, we are three people who met on a small island off the south coast of England, thousands of miles away from the events depicted in the film, so no we really have no reason to have come across the Emmitt Till story until this film came along. To be honest we were even lucky to find a cinema showing the film. As such we can only talk about the film and what it presented to us and our reaction to it. I can imagine that when the film was made, it was made with only an American audience in mind (like too many things are nowadays) and as such there is some assumed pre-knowledge. When films like this travel, the pre-knowledge will not be there and the film becomes an education piece and a window into a world that majority of the world hasn't experienced. As such it will land different and all we can do is talk about how it lands for us. Thank you for getting in touch, we really do appreciate it, see if there's anything else we said you'd like to comment on, and from what I've heard Danielle Deadwyler was robbed of an Oscar nom.

This is a film about the relationship between entertainment and audience. Particularly how the two come to inform one another. Throughout this film, we are nailed over the head with images of potentially violent, not-necessarily tame-able beings being filmed. Gordy. The UAP. The director watching clips of predator and prey fighting. Being drawn to the allure of spectacle makes us part of it, it chips at the division between what we consume and what we are. The most glaring example of this is Yeun and Gordy. Yeun notes that he and Gordy did the first ever "exploding fist-bump". Upon witnessing Gordy, to whom the humans thought had been tamed, made to be fit and safe for human consumption and viewership, snap and beat his co-stars horrendously, Yeun could still not distinguish his reality from entertainment. As Gordy came over to him, covered in blood, while Yeun hid beneath the table, he reaches out his hand -- seemingly to do the exploding fist bump with Yeun. Despite the context of the situation indicating that Gordy is clearly a violent, wild animal, Yeun reaches out his hand for the exploding fist bump. He cannot tell whether Gordy is a wild animal (whose actions he just bore witness to) or the character from the show. There is no division. Peele leaves this particularly ambiguous as Gordy is killed before contact can be made between the two. Was Gordy recalling his fondness for Yeun and reprising his character from the show, or was he reaching to hurt Yeun as part of his spree? We don't know. The line between entertainment and reality has fully blurred. This byline is made apparent throughout the film. Yeun (older) at the Star lasso experience calls the alien "the viewers", a bit on the nose for Peele, but Yeun who was once an actor and lived through that traumatic experience, can not tell who considers who to be entertainment. Are the aliens watching the humans for entertainment? Or are the humans watching the aliens as part of the Star Lasso Experience? When we get lost in spectacle, we become part of it as we bear witness. This is the point of not looking at the UAP. We break the cycle of a potentially dangerous feedback loop fueled by watching violent spectacle that shapes us, that directly informs what we desire to see. If we don't look, if we don't take part, we can control how we perceive things. That said, Peele provides meta-commentary in the shot in the diner to note that its hard to not have our attention drawn to spectacle. In a shot that is almost entirely comprised of our three main characters, we can see a fight in the background outside of the diner. Despite the situation at hand, we can't help but have our attention drawn to the fight outside. Even as viewers of this film we are somewhat helpless. Finally, I think Peele makes the finest point of this with the director. Almost every shot of the director we see him, as third party, watching footage of predator fighting prey. When he desires the shot (and becomes what he warned of, he who seeks the dream where he is at the top of the mountain), the divide between viewer and entertainment is dissolved entirely. What he considered himself third party to, what he sought to capture, consumed him entirely, only for Angel to attempt to capture it on camera. At once we can go of he who consumes to he who is consumed. All of this to say, I think the film was brilliant. To consume entertainment that bastardizes its subject is also to be consumed. What we view directly informs who we are, and who we are informs what is created and what there is to be viewed. It is easy to lose sight of this divide.

Now that ... is comprehensive. One of the things we liked about NOPE was the fact it's a thinker, and your essay proves that. We love it when people get in touch so we'll be attempting to read your comment out on our next episode, As it's quite long, it has been cut for time on a couple of occasions (Hmm, maybe we'll do it in chapters). In the meantime do check out our other reviews or see full episodes of the podcast at pnc.st/s/netflixvscinema

Awesome video! So I am trying to watch Prey with the Comanche audio and English subtitles. But I can’t find it in audio and subtitles language area in Disney+ . Also what is the best way to watch this film language wise ?

Hi Logann-Mackenzie, thanks for getting in touch again. Tosin the Host of the podcast here. I'm pretty sure that Sharon and I went for the Vanilla version where we just watched it in English. Thought it was interesting that they subtitled the french sections in French. I absolutely love that there is a Comanche version, but honestly, haven't had a play with it.

Awesome video! Seriously people are still complaining about this ? I am way over it. I am still trying to decide if it’s worth it to read the Jane Austen books. I tried reading Persuasion the book and it’s so slow, and I get to the end of the page and I am like what did I just read. This book is super hard to understand. How is one supposed to read it ? Also why do people like the writing and the language of the Jane Austen books because they are all just super hard to read. I tried the audiobook but that was just boring to listen to it. I would love to read the classics because I have never read any classics and the Jane Austen books are not making me want to read any classics. So please explain to me how am I supposed to understand these books ? How can a person read Jane Austen for fun and still understand the writing and the language ?

Hi Logann-Mackenzie, the lone defender of Netflix's Persuasion. Tosin here again. I can't speak for other people and I don't know if this applies to you, but I think there may be many factors at play. I also couldn't read Jane Austen (although that was when I was younger and just wanted things to explode every 5 minutes) but as I grew older (probably like 25) I started seeing what the fuss was about, on the other hand my wife for instance seemed to get it from the moment it was introduced in the English school system when she was around 14. So Age, Nationality, the country you grew up in, they probably all play a part, then there's the randomness of humans where for some reason, some things don't work for some people. I wouldn't sweat it, there's no rule that says that anything has to be universally loved.

I read all of Jane Austen's books between the age of 17 - 19. Enjoyed them, understood most of it, have reread them a few times. Have also read other classics, but it is not for everyone. If you don't enjoy classics, even if you wish to read them, it will only be a struggle, try something else. There is so much good literature out there, you have to find genres for yourself, which are fun to read. Beides classics, I enjoy historical romance, (urban) fantasy, some chick lit, and the last years a lot of non fiction on different subjects. Maybe try Jane Austen again in 5 years, sometimes our taste changes, but you might want to read Northanger Abbey first. Or for starters some other classics like Little Women or the Anne Of Green Gables series, Jane Eyre. Yes, they are partly young adult books, but even I at 58 still enjoy them.

Yo, Logan, go check out Ellie Dashwood's channel, you'll get all the info you need to "get" Jane Austen. One of her last videos is precisely about how many modern readers find her novels so inaccesible, and what can be done to help them a bit.

they made this movie for millennial and gen z generations.. they literally think that we are too stupid to understand jane Austen.. so they had to dumb her work down for us. I'm so glad that they got roasted for it; this adaptation is so condescending. also trying to attract a new audience doesn't work. it's like trying to make an action movie more romantic when your audience is mostly men.. eventually, no one will watch and you'll lose millions of dollars..

Hi Venessa, This is Tosin the Host of Netflix Vs Cinema. I actually saw your video with Bethany and Leah. I've pointed Sharon (our resident persuasion expert, as you might have gathered) in the direction of your video as 3weeks after we first reviewed it, it appears that people still have vitriol left to spew. Personally, I'm loving this little Jane Austen corner of the internet I was previously not aware of. Do not get Jane Austen fans mad. Thanks for the kind comments, please do check out our other reviews we read your comment out on Episode 159, you can listen it here pnc.st/s/netflixvscinema/2486a9ff/159-prey-showtrial-people-still-not-over-persuasion

One minor correction; although Wentworth would not have been a captain when he first proposed to Anne, he would have been a lieutenant or at least a midshipman, not "just a rating."

Thank you Sanjiv, Sharon here, you are right, that did occur to me after the review, he would have been an officer. We are not scripted so sometimes the incorrect term can be chosen off the top of the head.👍Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate all contact we receive.
