Gravely VS Hustler - which 60" ZTR is for you?
We have a 2008-ish Hustler FasTrak Super Duty 60" with a 25hp Kawasaki and a 2018 Gravely ProTurn460 60" with a 36hp Yamaha EFI that we use heavily on our property. At the Campgrounds we regularly mow approximately 10 acres or more depending on trails and other areas getting used that may need mowed.
Thoughts on the Hustler: At 900 hours, the ol' Hustler is hard to beat in terms of reliability and ease of use. Dual tanks ensure you can mow all day, but the seating position is a little snug for a big man. At 6'4" tall I find the control bars hit my knees when pushed forward to full speed. The controls can be adjusted in and out, but there doesn't appear to be a vertical adjustment for the height of the bars. All in all, the carbureted Kawi is forever reliable and the build is a simple, straightforward machine. This is a perfect unit if you have a big yard in town or a small ranch in the country and need to mow up to 4-5 acres and don't mind the slower 5mph mowing speed. Parts are cheap and still available!
Thoughts on the Gravely: this machine simply can't be beat by the Hustler when it comes to fuel efficiency, power, and speed - oh, and comfort with the air-ride seat. Purchased with only 25hrs on it, the Gravely had a rough start (pun intended) in our fleet. After much back and forth with the dealer, finally around the 250 hr mark we figured out the cold start issue and it has been an excellent mower since and has just under 350 hrs now. With the addition of the LED light bar and pods, you can mow any time, rain or shine, day or night. This is a great mower if you've got a lawn care business or a bigger farm or ranch with a 5-10 acre yard. I used to have a 6 ft finish PTO mower for my compact tractor and the Gravely would leave it in the dust, too. At 11mph, the Gravely can mow as fast as you can hang on to the controls, and that's a fact. Repairing this is a little trickier because the EFI and may require a trip to the shop to sort those issues out. Regular serviceability is equal to the Hustler with parts easily available.
Another thing, a quick search says the Hustler weights 860 lbs while the Gravely weighs in at 1400 lbs, this is a HUGE deal if you ever get them stuck. The Hustler is light enough that a grown man can pick up on the front wheels and help pull it out. If the Gravely gets stuck, you need to get a chain and a tow. You're not lifting any part of it to get it unstuck.
This is an apples and oranges comparison, for sure. But if you find yourself in the market for one of these rigs, I hope my information helps you out in making your decision.

    Regarding your future plans for 6.2 TB and manifold swap and intake tube, you realize you’ll need to retune after changing each one of those things. So factor in the price of tuning services. Also I think the only material gain will come from the long tube headers which ironically don’t require a tune.

    • @etspaulding
      @etspaulding 6 місяців тому

      Truck is since sold. This is based on my experience only. I did eventually add the 6.2 TB and IM (and a handheld tuner, which is not the same as a custom tune) and it performed great with zero issues. No code. No idle issues. Started up perfectly the first time and drove immediately with no problems. There were definite gains on the butt dyno with zero driveability issues. If I changed the MAF size then it would need a tune, but the truck learned the bigger TB and IM flawlessly. So no, it doesn’t need a tune with the 6.2 TB and IM, but a tune will only help.

    • @etspaulding
      @etspaulding 7 місяців тому

      They are great trucks! Very good choice to delete the DOD. I never had issues with it but I disabled it with a tuner. Preventative will for sure go a long way. In my experience with the 6L80, you should not haul heavy loads in 5 or 6 gear. Those are both overdrive and the factory GM transmission programming just burns the converters up, especially with a load. The trans t-stat will be a big help. When I did the converter swap I added an external trans cooler and deleted the trans t-stat altogether. That brought the trans temps way down to better range. If your truck has the factory trailer brake controller you should already have an external cooler, if not I’d suggest adding one to your setup as well. When I got our suburban, the factory trailer brake controller was a must have, because that means it at minimum it has the HD trailering package, possibly the MAX trailering pkg. The suburban I got has the HD trailering pkg, so my temps stay super low and safe for the 6l80. That trans is a great transmission, way better than the 4l60, it just doesn’t do well with the heat that they suffer in factory form.

    • @etspaulding
      @etspaulding Рік тому

      A 2010 "HR" is the front wheel drive version VQ35HR from the Z/G cars, any 2009-2015 Maxima with HR heads on it. There are some discussions on the maxima.org forums of whether or not it's a true "HR", Nissan calls it a VQ35DE (2nd gen), but from what I've read, the important things are the same on the FWD and RWD cars, ports, combustion chamber, etc, it's just coolant ports and maybe a few other things that make them slightly different. The rumor is it's just the tune that makes the Maxima motor 280hp and the Z/G get 310hp-ish. I think they are very easy to come across in a junkyard. I picked mine up from Facebook Marketplace for $250 3 years ago. Just be aware, the Altima has the same engine but a smaller intake manifold, so less HP. And, now guys have swapped the newer 2016+ VQ35 into maximas and it's even better. www.my4dsc.com/how-to-swap-a-newer-gen2-2007-altima-or-2009-maxima-vq35de-engine-into-older-nissans/

    Those parts store clamps and extension pipes and adapters are REALLY cheap thin metal. Don't expect them to last too long. For an emergency patched system I got a year or little longer from that junk. You can go to a regular muffler shop and ask for a couple sections of pipe and they'll even expand then for you. At least twice the thickness of that Advance stuff. Those mufflers are Chinese and just about all the major brands, except Dynomax, Borla, and Magnaflow have a version of this exact Chinese muffler. Summit used to sell them for $36 a few months ago. I'd be curious how they hold up. They're 409 stainless and thinner than a mild steel version of that type muffler. The thin gauge 409 tends to crack sometimes because of the hardness, especially around the welds. If I was in the market for that type of economy muffler I would get the Salutes. I called AP or Cherry Bomb and they lied to me and said those mufflers are made in Loundonville, TN. BS!

    • @etspaulding

      I had the muffler welded in finally. It’s still holding up just fine. No cracks or leaks and the steel wrapping is good because it hasn’t become ridiculously loud! Yes, they are a cheap knockoff. I was under the impression that these were made alongside the big name brands in the same Chinese factories with nearly identical part numbers across brands, just different packaging and labels. If the major brands are USA made it would be a reasonable price to pay and keep the business here, IMO.

    • @etspaulding
      @etspaulding 2 роки тому

      Right, the factory exhaust is like 2.75” so a 3” ID more or less slips over the factory piping. I ended up having a muffler shop essentially install a 3” catback using my muffler and did a resonator delete. One of these days I’ll sit down and put together a short update video on it. I really liked the vid man!! I just bought a 2014 silverado. great visual on the install process. I'm looking for a deeper tone without being too loud because I drive to customer's houses for work and don't want to sound like a douche, Thanks for the info!

      You're welcome. I don't think I mentioned in the video, but you should gain a few HP just with the muffler swap because of the less restrictive exhaust.

    U had to have had taken of the resonator muffler to get a diffrent tone.

    • @etspaulding
      @etspaulding 3 роки тому

      Yeah for sure. The tone has opened up some more as the muffler has broke in. Once the resonator comes off it will sound awesome.

    I think that resonator is killing most of the sound. I have heard those on other trucks without the resonator and it is much louder. I am also looking for something with a better tone and just a little louder than stock.

      I agree! I plan to have my local muffler guy run 3” from the cat to the muffler and then 3” all the way out to maybe a 4” tip. I am planning on adding headers soon as well.
