In my last video ua-cam.com/video/yLGLxwv0qAw/v-deo.htmlsi=1KJ3vGmHJrSr0yep I had Reynolds try to hold on to the town of Gettysburg proper, and though it was close, in the end Lee broke the Union army. Well, Meade licked his wounds and decided to take it back. Actually, Lincoln persuaded him to take it back. This is his attempt.

Instead of playing the "sensible defense," I look at WHAT IF Reynolds tries to hold Gettysburg! It's definitely interesting. One advantage to playing two-fisted solo is you can try completely different tactics and strategies, even ones that are unbalanced.

      @frs51 Exactly. From Divisional General on down, all you cared about was who was on your left and who was on your right. No one at those levels had a battlewide picture of what was going on. Hell, even the Generals at the Corps and Army level were desperate to get a full picture. As James Dunnigan famously said, "the problem with most wargames isn't that they aren't detailed enough, it's that they give the players way more intel than their historical counterparts could ever dream of having."

    It looks like combat really needs to swing in the Union's favor to have a forward defense of Gettysburg. It's games like this that make me appreciate Reynolds' and Howard's decisions on the First Day. Howard had the sense to leave troops on Cemetery Hill to start digging in and preparing a defense.

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles 14 днів тому

      Oh definitely. If I were playing in a tournament, I sure as heck would not try to hold Gettysburg proper. Unlike us gamers, they hadn't already played it numerous times, with full knowledge of the enemy's strength and arrival times. One huge mistake I made, and glossed over in the video, is I brought Ewell's division on a turn early. Turn five he should have been arriving, not assaulting Gettysburg. It's one of the things I lose track of sometimes when recording a video. Oh well, nothing for it but to play again! Early could have been early!😆 Combat can get swingy, but it tends to average out. This is fine in my book. Everything is up in the air in battle. The commanders didn't know who would win each melee. I like the six sided odds which are 50/50, or 1/3 or 2/3. Basically it's too close to tell, or it probably will/ probably won't, work. That's the sort of knowledge commanders can expect on the battle field.

      @mikestephan1228 thanks! I did notice while editing that there were a few things I could have done differently to hold Gettysburg a little longer, and maybe that would have been enough. You're welcome. I think this game has lots of solo potential, depending on your definition of solo. I play two fisted solo, just to enjoy the narrative. The game has lots of sandbox potential (create your own scenarios). The only limit is how much is too much. How many factions do you want to manage? Do you want to play the basic game, or go advanced? For myself, I get bogged down if there is too much granularity. If I want to play advanced, I keep the scenario very small. For most scenarios, I keep it basic.

      The system is entirely backwards and forwards compatible. The brigade blocks are smaller, the labels are the same 1/4" height, they just go right to the edge on the 1/4" blocks. The fonts are basically the same, more of the label space is being used. As you know, there is very little critical game info on the block. Cavalry, Artillery, Militia, or Elite, all require a single symbol. The commanders name is in Smaller font, but you don't actually need to know that in-game.

    Would you please make a video with a night turn and a second day, like in Gettysburg, I can’t figure out how where and when to setup the recovering blocks, if they are fresh or spent, if the remaining blocks become fresh the next morning, or if they need to rally,etc… Also have you considered allowing the bags to repack and move during the night, since whole divisions are recovered from the dead pile (This especially useful for the Waterloo campaign, more than Gettysburg)?

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles 2 місяці тому

      There are rules with the Waterloo campaign for packing up and unpacking later. To unpack later you must be 3 foot moves away, which makes it nearly impossible to do on the same map. Packing up bags is considered a major undertaking, and is generally not possible in a battle. Remember, the bags represent more than just the supply wagons, they also include hospitals, engineering troops, as well as kitchens and so forth. Essentially, everything that makes the "city" of tens of thousands of souls function. It's not as simple as grabbing some wagons and moving back a couple miles. Blocks that are recovered during the night turn and are placed within command range of their HQs, and are fresh.

    Also note that Jackson has opened up their northern supply route. Cutting the southern one is now moot. Lee can trace supply to the north and escape that way, back across the Potomac. Same with Ewell's attack at 11:20. He would be destroyed if he had to attack back from there because the path to the bridge would bring him closer to the enemy troops behind him. That is towards the enemy, not away from the. I see a few other examples later, but you get the idea. =)

      I see on top of page 7 on the 4.0 rules an example with the comment "this piece can retreat because the majority of the piece can fit between the enemy pieces." I would say the drawing shows the retreating unit brought closer to the enemy troops behind him. Or am I mistaken?

    Another example: 6:39. Doubleday can't retreat from there. That is not back and away from the enemy. It takes him closer to the enemy or at the very least, laterally across the enemy. Can't do that. Must be "back and away from". Both of those blocks would be destroyed if forced to retreat.

    The retreat at 7:42 is also illegal. That retreat take it closer to the enemy. There is no other place to go, so that block is destroyed.

      OMG, yes it was! They are coming out with the newer brigade blocks which will more accurately depict the forces involved. Also, I will be getting a new Dolly set up for my camera and will finally be able to record the Marengo map properly. Good things coming.

    This is the first time I've looked into the pub battles system for solo play. Your playthroughs make it seem both engaging and brilliantly designed. I thoroughly enjoyed watching! I have to admit, though, as a non-American who isn't very familiar with the US Civil War, I couldn't help but chuckle every time you mentioned the commanding officer named Hooker. Maybe a bit immature on my part. Heh. Hooker. *giggles.*

      @nidhoggstrike However, it is accurate, that's where the term came from. He notoriously always had them with him. The system is great for solo. It is very authentic, so you don't have a lot of artificial mechanics to remember, plus the chit draw acts like a save game function if you get called away. You just come back draw a chit, and you're back at it.

      If you prefer Napoleonic over ACW, Marengo is coming out very soon. It will be very easy to convert to brigade blocks, since the blocks are already battalion levelish.

      @captainnolan5062 Yes! You can already get the brigade blocks for the Brandywine campaign. Whether you buy it new, or just get the new blocks if you already have the game with the map, you will get the 4.0 rules. I already have videos uploaded showing Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth Courthouse.

      Yes, fighting Friday's got a little ambitious. I'm retired, I don't need no stinkin' schedules! 😂 Brigade scale does look so cool. Having to resolve over 60 combats in two turns was pretty overwhelming, even with Musket Battles smooth and easy combat resolution. It is like a drug, it's killing me, but I wants it! 😊
