Wings! - To 3D Print or Not to 3D Print? - RC F-16 Build Part 9
What's an F-16 without its wings right? In this video I build the wings which gives the F-16 the last of its main structural components. I encounter an issue with the original fiberglass wing design (my bad!) that causes me to change direction with the wing build. Version two of the wing gets 3D printed from LW-PLA (lightweight PLA).

Finishing the Fuselage! RC F-16 Build - Part 8
Переглядів 27 тис.Рік тому
After many, many months of work, the F-16 fuselage is complete and looking amazing! It was well worth the effort! In this video I make/install the rest of the internal structure, layup the remaining fiberglass skins and ducts, fit the electronics, and install the vertical fin. And just like in other parts of the build, specially made 3D printed alignment jigs/tools come in handy to position par...
Let's Build The Fuselage! RC F-16 - Part 7
Переглядів 98 тис.Рік тому
The F-16 is really starting to take shape! In this video I start building the fuselage. I use PVA release film for the first time to see if it can prevent the mold primer from sticking to the parts. The internal structure glue up also calls for the use of special made 3D printed alignment jigs/tools. Want to support my work? Weight and Balance | Custom RC F-16 Build - Part 6
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
This video is all about aircraft weight and balance! I give a few reasons why it is important, walk you through my weight and balance spreadsheet (which estimates the weight and the longitudinal C.G. location of my RC F-16), and compare the weights of the components I already built to my estimates. Do not use can spray primers, those can spray primers have poor adhesion to the plastic, they are soft, they keep shrinking even after months. Use polyester primer instead. If you do not have spray gun to spray polyester primer you can apply it with foam roller on the surface.

    I have a doubt...why haven't you used any longitudinal brace (stringers) that runs through all bulkheads of the fuselage? That would have made your airframe stiffer longitudinally

    • @3DParadigmDesign
      @3DParadigmDesign 3 місяці тому

      I considered using them but determined they weren't needed. The spacing between frames is so small that the skin itself doesn't need them for stiffness. The fuselage is actually plenty stiff. There's internal structure that helps with its bending. Like the two support beams for the battery and two longerons between the main landing gear and horizontal stabilizer frames. Also, the inner EDF ducting through the frames provides an incredible amount of stiffness. The fuselage is a double walled tube there essentially.

    I make fibreglass models from homemade molds : Your approach is a thin layer of fibreglass on an underlying structure and it is beautiful but you can also make the skin to be a structure in itself an vastly decrease the number of formers and the overall weight. A thin Herex pre- shaped with a heat gun and curing under vacuum, otherwise known as sandwich construction faster and easier to make. Beautiful anyway

    • @3DParadigmDesign
      @3DParadigmDesign 7 місяців тому

      I did a calculation and it would have been heavier if I used another ply and less frames. The weight of another layer of fiberglass ply plus epoxy is quite a lot more than just having more balsa frames. I definitely agree it would have been an easier and quicker build if I had much less frames.

    • @oyveydetoymeny
      @oyveydetoymeny 7 місяців тому

      @@3DParadigmDesign I.m inclined to believe you but what matrix did you use? Glue seams can be heavy… total ply weight when you use a one ounce first cloth layer for texture followed by a two ounce on other side of the herex for a total of 5ounces while re absorbing a lot of resin in the vacuum process is my way to doing things but I’m not trying to say I’m right

    • @3DParadigmDesign
      @3DParadigmDesign 7 місяців тому

      @@oyveydetoymeny I used a single ply of 6oz fiberglass. And approximately a 50/50 weight ratio for epoxy to fiberglass. I can see your method being just as light or lighter since the ply weights are much lower. Sandwich structure composites are very efficient for stiffness.

    • @3DParadigmDesign
      @3DParadigmDesign 7 місяців тому

      I have another video that talks about the molds. Maybe the only step missing is how I modeled them in Fusion 360. It was quite simple though. You basically create a box and "cut away/remove/subtract" the section of the airplane from that box. And you have a mold! ua-cam.com/video/eH55p1k6gYg/v-deo.htmlsi=fFD9lDg74ClBITFW

    You did your mold wrong. You should print your wing not the mold. After you print your wing, you should sand it and polish it, make it nice and smoth. Next step is coverd it with special mold resin after that you will apply several layers of fiber glass. Now you have your propper mold done. With this kind of mold you can make your fiber glas wing and it will NEVER bend.

    I'de be curious what your slicer predicts the weight to be if you used PETG vs LWPLA. Plus is the work of fiberglass worth the weight savings? 3rd ever consider low expansion spray foam internal? Fewer internal spars with greater rigidity.

    • @3DParadigmDesign
      @3DParadigmDesign 10 місяців тому

      If I printed out of PETG it would weigh about 76g (for just the printed parts. doesn't include the carbon rod or wood tabs). So that's a bit heavier than the fiberglass wing. Is the fiberglass work worth it? I'd say it depends. If the whole plane was printed from PETG it would be very heavy and probably wouldn't fly well. It could instead certainly be printed from LW-PLA to save a lot of weight and fly better. It's truly a lot of work building it with molds, composite skins, and wood internal structure. It would have been way easier for me (considering I'm very comfortable CAD modeling) to make the plane fully 3D printed. But it wasn't about what was easier. I wanted the experience of doing it with fiberglass/molds. I didn't consider low expansion spray foam but that's a good idea too! There are many ways to build RC airplanes. Just depends which way you want to do it.
