Showcasing great jazz records you can find at your local record shop (without breaking the bank)
Excellent video! Great selections. Totally agree with you on the Sunflower album, it’s great. Checking out that Tribe album now…
@@goldthredz hey, thanks Andrew. @stevefromchicago8277 also gave a shout out 👇to another Horace Arnold LP below that I really like as well called Tales of the Exonerated Flea
Hi, if you made 100 videos it would not be a nuff please keep it up.ken from England.😊
Mingus Moves was recently reissued as part of the Changes box set. Not sure if that reissue is available as a standalone, but it sounds excellent. That whole box set sounds excellent really.
Very cool - thanks for the PSA. Looks like a nice collection from his Atlantic twilight years
Just followed your channel. Have you done a video on just the Muse label? So many great titles and a lot of them are very reasonable if not outright cheap.
Muse is great. I’ve shown a few titles from the label. Definitely recommend your favorites
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs Phil Woods - Musique Du Bois, The Cedar Walton Trio - A Night At Boomers (vol. 1. & 2), The Woody Shaw Concert Ensemble - At The Berliner Jazztage, Richard Davis - Epistrophy & Now's The Time… so many more to hunt down. Also interested in Steeplechase Flying Dutchman Embarrassing, East Wind, Galaxy, Enja … so many great records wound up on these “smaller” labels simply because they were out of style with the tastes of the day. A lot of the best records I found used in the last year are on such labels, and usually they are bargains compared to blue note, etc.. 🙌
Thanks. I just bought the John Handy on your recommendation for cheap off a Japanese website. 1970 US repress.
Heck yea!
Love your channel. Thanks for showing lots of records (plus needle drops sometimes!) in bite size pieces. Perfect balance.
Thanks for the vote of confidence and the feedback - I do try to keep it moving and… to the point
Davis stone martin
This channel is great, thanks 🙏
Mingus hated being called Charlie. He was Charles.
Interesting. I’d seen him billed as Charlie several times.
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs “Don’t call me Charlie. That’s not a man’s name, that’s a name for a horse.” I believe the only official release in which he was billed “Charlie Mingus” was Tijuana Moods. All other albums that bill him as such are bootlegs. I have no idea why Tijuana Moods listed him as Charlie, but I suppose it could have been a decision made by the record company. Mingus was also known to contradict himself quite often, so the above quote might have just been stated when he was in one of his infamous ornery Mingus Moods!
Mingus Moves 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 One of my all-time favorites along with Changes 1 & 2
It would help if you took the sleeve off, so we could see the cover more clearly, without all the reflections.
Yep. Will take that advice going forward
I would say inexpensive, but they are becoming rare with the advent of social media . Before vinyl post there wasn’t many jazz buyers 😊
@@donnieodom7844 yep - it’s a different world. You have to be quite patient these days
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs man I been the game for years , it’s really hit or miss with everyone trying to get noticed on social media
There is so much great music that's never been heard so thanks for this exposure
it took me over three hours (of browsing random YT ) to finally find your channel... THANK YOU for sharing all this - I found a lots of good music flows for myself here. this is a real 'well of music'
Awesome - thanks for checking my channel out. Glad you found some good stuff 👍
You picked up my subscription on the first record. Love that live Miles record. You have my trust.
i appreciate you heavily, indeed all underrated deep grooves and vibes!!🤲
Thank you my man. Gotta spread the gospel
Love Burton love Bags
I like that Thorens what model and cart? Would you recommend it?
That would be a Thorens TD160. Originally a pretty expensive 70s turntable, it can be found these days around $300 - $400. It’s a great table. The cart is a audio technica VM540ML
The 2 Gabor Szabo CTI albums, Mizrab and The Rambler, are worth giving a listen, cheap as well
Great list 👍 There are so many CTI and spinoff label Kudu that are still cheap in the bins - Hubbard Red Clay, Randy Weston Blue Moses, Joe Farrell Penny Arcade, just to name a few. For Horacee Arnold I actually like Tales of the Exonerated Flea more
Thanks - I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that Arnold record. Hadn’t heard of it
Love Sunflower
My favorite on CTI
Other South African jazz recommendations that are not terribly expensive: Hugh Masekela - Home Is Where The Music Is (reissued as African Connection) Winston Mankunku Ngozi - Yakhal Inkomo Abdullah Ibrahim - Water From an Ancient Well Dudu Pukwana - Flute Music and In The Townships
Thanks for the recs. Will add these to my waitlist 👌
Also on Denon is the fabulous duo of Archie Sheep and Abdullah Ibrahim.
Wow Archie with Dollar brand?? I’ve got to check that out
David Pike- jazz version of Oliver with Jimmy Raney
CTI and ECM are definitely not obscure labels. Also agree with you that M Davis is over-rated.
I don’t actually think Miles is overrated but understand why some may think so
Not Miles is not overrated Period.. end of paragraph
@kylealsberry8602 ...The Electric Miles is overrated!
@brucescott4261 🤷🏾 Miles created that genre of music. Weather Report, Return To Forever into the next phase of Electric music.
@@brucescott4261sounds more likely to be underrated by you.
I have the Milt Jackson Sunflower And Gil Scott Herron albums that I bought back when. Excellent Post
Top tier! These are basically on a constant rotation
Bohannon's Beat, wow ! , thanks
John Handy live at Monterey 1967 is also everywhere for super cheap
Agreed. Great record - costs next to nothing. Will feature it soon
Appreciate the info and the tips! Some great stuff to look out for.
Appreciate it. Thanks for the comment
Excellent! Thanks a lot for this video. It's nice o hear your thoughts and needle drops. Subscribed!
Thanks. Looks like you focus in classical. That’s pretty cool. Very few channels even touch upon that. I’ll check it out!
Thanks for the suggestions. I too are using a Sumiko Moonstone cart.
Thanks. I’m a big fan of the Moonstone. Punches above its weight and tracks superbly
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs Yes it does. Originally I was using the Ortifon 2m blue, which is a fine cart but I prefer the Moonstone.
Great obscure stuff thanks! Did not know about Jones brothers love Elvin and Thad
Thanks. Obscure is the name of the game. And I didn’t even know they were brothers until recently
My best wish for a successful channel! Do you have any recommendations on Bebop Jazz Albums? Thank you.
Many thanks! I like Sonny Stitt quite a bit - New York Jazz and a Personal Appearance are perhaps my favorites. There are Japanese reissues from the early 80s called Immortal Jazz on Verve and offer this early output very affordably at a high quality. I wish I knew more about true 40s bebop a la Parker, Dizzy and Kenny Clarke but it is definitely a weak point for me! Thanks for watching
'jettisoned' means to throw away
The more you know. I always thought it meant more like propelled but that is certainly not the case! Thanks for the correction
Informative & inspiring, thanks. Will be watching all your other videos now.
Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts
Wonderful video - thank you. Subscribed 👍
Thanks - the feedbacks appreciated
90% of my jazz collection is from the cheap bins and I regret nothing.
This is the way
Nice feature, thank you. Would like to submit: --World Saxophone Quartet "plays duke ellington" --Jackie McLean "Consequence"
Thanks for watching and the suggestions. I’ll seek these out for sure!
Great stuff. That JJ Johnson record is really special. - Chris
Thanks, Chris. I’ll take that stamp of approval from a bona fide jazz bum 👍
Good video! Many times when I go to record stores, I take cheap jazz records because you often find little-known gems. It helps that some of the sidemans are well-known, or to know the name of some labels like Muse, Xanadu, SteepleChase, Soul Note, which are not so well-known but may have records that may not be "essential jazz classics", but... You can have a good musical time with them. Since the great advantage that jazz has is that it is good and complex music, and it is difficult for me to find jazz records that I consider "garbage" (with some exceptions, obviously). There are simply jazz albums that stand out more than others due to different circumstances. Thank you for your recommendations and greetings from Mexico! 😸
Completely agree. Albums with known players are almost always solid - which is really unlike any other genre and what makes digging for jazz so rewarding. Gracias por ver mi video!
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs You may come across an album whose leader you don't know, but some of its sidemans do. That helps a lot when choosing a jazz album "blindly" Gracias por responder a mi comentario. 😸
I binge watched every video after one randomly hit my feed (the algorithm knows where your groove lies). This is a real service to those of us who can't afford or simply won't pay $100 for a record no matter how good an investment it might be. I have some of the records you list usually bought for a dollar or two. Your knowledge of jazz seems encyclopedic. Can you include a record by artists you think most jazz folk don't know? Thanks for all you do!
Thank you kindly. There are those WAY more knowledgeable than I on UA-cam (even if I try to be a little more to the point). I just know my labels and am not afraid to take chances! Thanks for checking out my vids
I love Hank Jones Groovin High! Found it in a shop for $8 and it is often on the turntable, excellent hard bop session. Hank’s work in The Great Jazz Trio needs to show up in a future video. Cheap 🔥
Agreed all around. I’ve been on the lookout for at the village vanguard but it’s been elusive!
that paul horn album look familiar, will have to pick it up if i see it down under. love the makekela album.
It sold very well in its day - we trip over copies here in the States at least. Thanks for watching btw
Keep quiet about the Pablo's while they're still around cheap! Acoustic Sounds have just started to reissue them as audiophile pressings and once the word gets out I suspect prices of originals are going to skyrocket. Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable video; just subscribed. Take care my friend
I did catch that acoustic sounds did a round of reissues - surprised me for sure! I suppose as more people get into jazz (especially via vinyl) Pablo is bound to become more expensive as most labels have. They’re very well recorded and feature the greats - easy pickups in my mind. Anyway, thanks for watching and the subscribe.
I really enjoyed your videos! I share your philosophy on record collecting, nothing better then going to a shop digging for some cheap heat and exploring music. Look forward to seeing where you take your channel.
Hey, thanks for checking them out! I appreciate the vote of confidence. It’s a great philosophy - except I’m running out of space
Thank you. Ken
Hi. Ken from England really like what you are doing jazz fan. Was in New York in the 90s got a lot of muse lps from. Tower records . Easy …
Thanks for watching from across the pond, Ken. Love Muse label - those LPs are going to be expensive one day (many already are!)
Thank you please keep adding to your site. Ken.

Hello, I just subscribed to your youtube channel. Your content is really great, but you didn't optimize your video, if you optimize your video will rank. If you want I can help you to grow your channel as well as SEO ranking.
CTI covers are known for being eye catching I thought.
Yes I suppose many are indeed!
@@Cheap_Heat_Recs ok in the video you said the opposite. Very interesting collection of vinyl. I’ll look out for Muse. Thanks
