    Interesting video! I recently got my 2xreed scoring tool. Kind of have a hard time to score with it. When using too light pressure, it looks scored, but not great. With more pressure I can’t get the tool as smoothly across the tube like you do. So I get chumps and places where you can see where the tool stopped with scoring. . . I also have Rieger’s mandrel support, which doesn’t crack the reed after having scored it. After that I use the threading technique that I use on making my cor anglais reeds, starting between the lower quarter and middle of the tube.

    Hi Andrew, If you want to increase the depth of field, ( the range of distance from the lens inside of which things remain in focus) it can be done. Try to increase the light, allowing a lower shutter speed for a given aperture. If you can close the aperture but maintain the same shutter speed, it will give you a longer depth of field. For any level of light, if you close the aperture and lower the shutter speed it will have the side effect of increasing the depth of field. Adding light will make this far easier.

    • @burnbassoon
      @burnbassoon Місяць тому

      Hi Dean, yes I am aware that closing the aperture will increase the area in focus. However, I was already at F8 on a super35 sensor and did not want the ISO so high that the image become very noisy. It’s also the case that the closer the subject is, the narrower the area of focus, and the reeds were very close to the front of the lens. The main issue I have with the lens is that it has an old focusing motor and it takes quite a lot of time to focus in comparison with modern lenses with stepless autofocus motors. Thanks!

    HI Everyone, one comment from Chad Taylor on FB I thought would be helpful to read here: "I used to do this and yes it will create a more open reed tip aperture. The downside is I found that it also made my reeds play alot flatter overall and required more embochure pressure than what I was comfortable with. After about 11 years of trial and error, I went back to conventional beveling and I (as well as my embochure) were far happier" - Chad E Taylor

    @10:43 The collars are so incredibly clean, and straight, and they appear to have a good right angle. I don't know how you do it- if it is entirely cut while the cane is on the profiling barrel, but- it's impressive. I know you've shared a strategy in the past, in this video, is this still your approach to cleaning the collar, or have you changed it from this method? ua-cam.com/video/2Y_C_qaLPbI/v-deo.html Regardless, this was a great video, thank you for sharing this.

      Thanks very much for your detailed observation! Actually, I’m cheating - I’ll explain what changed in a future video. When working generally with cane off of a standard profiler, yes I still clean the collar during that process when it is still on the barrel. Then I can immediately re-profile that area so that it sits at the intended thickness. I wish I could say more at this point!

    I am in the generation that precedes you. Therefore my teachers were yet another! generation back. The style was to berate, insult, and attack the student to get them to work up to the level the teachers wanted. Years later I was involved in setting up a mentorship program, and everyone was to talk about their mentors that helped them. I had nothing to say! There was no MENTORSHIP attitude when I started... just bullying. I think part of it is the era, but now it is unacceptable to teach that way. That is a good thing :)

    When I walked into the audition room for the university choir as a first year in front of a panel of four and an accompanist, the director asked me my name, and I said “um, James”. “Um James, is it? Your name is Um James?” I started to put my music back in my bag and was ready to walk out there and then, but luckily he said something else and got me to sing. What the Discovery theme sounds like to me is a composer doodling of an afternoon. It just doesn't work. It's nothing. The final chord is just plain weird, drawing attention to what is, effectively, the whole piece's atonality in a way that just screams "why"? Musically, what is the intention behind that chord? To be jarring to the viewer? What for? It doesn't excite me to expect adventures. It doesn't make me sad. It doesn't make me horrified. It feels almost like "oh I need to end it somewhere but let's mix it up a bit for no reason". It's perfunctory and sloppy, which surely is NOT the feel you want to create going into each episode!

    • @burnbassoon
      @burnbassoon 6 місяців тому

      It also depends on the distance of the cutting plate from the blade. Some companies have too wide a tolerance to accommodate for 0.04mm. You may have to go to 0.02mm. Blade depth on profiler: no, only because I don’t have a reliable way to measure. I generally sharpen my blade after 40 reeds, so I can allow for quite a deep cut. I like to see the bark come off in one pass. That’s not really helpful, I know…
