Electronic Treasure
Приєднався 20 жов 2022
I'm not a professional youtube'er but just a fellow hobbyist who enjoys finding and restoring the computers of my childhood. I'm a programmer by profession, but completed an electronics and computer repair program at a local technical school in the early 90s, right out of high school. Back then computer repair actually meant circuit board repair, not just replacing cards and power supplies. Ultimately I ended up programming for the past 30 years, so electronics and computer repair has been just a hobby. I am definitely not an electronics engineer, so I learn something new with each repair, and that is what I enjoy most.
If you enjoy repairing retro computers, perhaps my content will be of some interest. Thanks for watching!

SIDKick Pico problem fixed! The BEST SID 6581/8580 replacement for Commodore 64/128!
Переглядів 59619 годин тому
Repairing yet another machine with a bad SID chip, I decided to try something new. I've always avoided emulators but the cost of SID chips is getting a bit high, and well you never know what you are going to get. Some sound great and others sound weak, and of course there are multiple versions and releases of each. I decided to try the SIDKick because it's cheap and supports both the 6581/8580 ...
Ten-Tec Century 21 Alignment, it's easy!
Переглядів 836День тому
The Century 21, a fantastic novice radio from the 70s, is really a work of art. It's simple to use, rugged, and easy to repair. I've had many radios but something about the Century 21 just appeals to me and I find myself using it more than any other rig for CW. Here I describe the process of doing a simple alignment to get the PTO dial on frequency.

Commodore 1526/MPS-802 can't print graphics!?!
Переглядів 410Рік тому
One thing you hear about the Commodore 1526 and MPS-802 printers over and over again is that they can't print graphics. The true story is that they CAN print graphics, but it is not supported by most programs. In this video I demonstrate printing graphics on the 1526 (also known as the MPS-802) as well as a modification which makes the printer compatible with all Commodore 64 printing programs....

eBay Find - Commodore 64/128 1902A Monitor in for Repair
Переглядів 801Рік тому
Up late one night, I found this 1902A monitor hidden on ebay listed as a book. Looking at the photos I found the price was actually very good assuming it is really a working or at least repairable monitor. What did I actually get? Watch and find out!

I have a sidkick here. Will the fixed firmware be available either in the official firmware release site or put up somewhere by you?
Hi the tool to change the firmware actually comes in the zip file with the firmware. You just run it from command prompt with name of the firmware file and the two bus timings. Or, you can place the sktiming .prg on a disk, and load it in the config utility by pressing F7 and it will install on the pi so you can change run the program to change the timing from the c64. Maybe I should do a short video on this?
@@electronictreasure4191 ok great I'll try it thanks.
SidKick Pico is an amazing project. I have ordered the pcb's and mounted one in my C64. It really sounds great. I guess it's not possible for most people to tell the difference between a real sid and this emulation. I'm wondering if any of these Chinese pico board clones (I have several ones) would be suitable (I'll try). It's funny when you think about it, as the pico itself is much more powerful than the C64 and could easily run a C64 emulator :)
The best one to get might be the latest version that is the same size as a real SID. It has the pico built onto the board. Unless you are a soldering black belt 7th dan master I suggest you get the PCB company to assemble it ;-)
@g4z-kb7ct 😄😆 I'm not bad at soldering but certainly not 7th Dan lol BTW I tried a Chinese pico board and it works fine. 100% compatible with the original rp2040 board, it seems
TenTec made some great rigs.
For a novice rig it really is a joy to use. Full break in, offset on either side on one knob, zero beat, 5 bands, forgiving (accidentally sending without an antenna wont harm it), it's just really a great rig.
I don’t unsolder the speaker. Remove the four speaker cover screws and there are two slots the speaker will slide through. Then, I clip the speaker onto one side, facing in to protect it. I also add quick-disconnects to all the pesky wires that would normally need to be unsoldered to remove the front panel. Makes servicing much easier. I also add a pot to adjust the side tone pitch. The original side tone is romantic, but at 400hz doesn’t allow using external audio filters.
Nice radio, i once tried to purchase one. Got a Century-22 for quiet some time, absolutely my favorite radio for a long time, but now retired. Also some age issues, PTO is a linear scale, not a rotary
Thanks for making a great tutorial video - K8AI
Thank you so much, brother! Love the channel and the focus on monitors
May I please hate my C128?
Excellent video, a memory recorder has been used, what type of memory was used to record, where can you get that chip?
Hi, The original EPROM in my printer was a 27C64, 28 pin eprom, firmware version 1526/C 341-03. There is a jumper to set 24pin / 28 pin eprom. In my case I did not need to set the jumper. If there is a 24 pin rom installed, you may need to cut/bridge the jumper to install a 28 pin eprom. The ROM image for the graphics rom I placed here for download: file.io/OhnkpCycNl3s archive.org/details/mps-802-gph-rom Most eprom burners can do 27xx EPROMS. I used a "GQ 4x4": www.mcumall.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=66&product_id=166
How does it print lowercase 'p's and 'q's now?
It prints them the same... descends under the line.
Thank you very much indeed for this informative video..I have the amiga500 and oddly it is only the keys which have slight yellowing.I shall attempt a retrobrite at some point...thanks again.
Ha ha! I recognize “Forbidden Forest” as the final screen shot! Classic!
First of all, nice work. The power light is on on my 1084 too. There is sound from the speaker but there is no picture. So there is low current but not high current. Could my problem be the same? 👏👏
Yes its a very common problem!
@@electronictreasure4191 Thank you for your answer. When ı move it closer to the screen in the Ncv setting of the multimeter, it says there iş voltage. It makes more mouse, especially when ı move it closer to middle part. Is this voltage low or high current?
@@kenansakizci6659 Hi, do not poke around with the multimeter in there unless you know which areas to avoid. There are some very dangerous high voltages near the flyback transformer. The first thing to do is examine all of the solder joints on the flyback transformer (one with red wire coming out of it) under a microscope or magnifying glass. Look for cracks (a circle around the pin). Re-flow the solder all of those pins. Be sure to discharge CRT and large capacitors before touching anything! If you feel no screen voltage (static on the glass with your hand when it's turned on) then it is probably the flyback transformer solder joints. If you DO have screen voltage but no picture it could be a number of other problems.
I wanted to do that since I got that 1526 as a birthday present. Thank you very much. Can you send a link for the doodle tools with the doodleprint1526.prg in it. I could not find it on the web.
Was your wife impressed Sheldon?
Hah uh... hang on.... she says yes. she still has a card I made for her hung up on the wall lol!
Nice job,i had a C= 1960 multisync that a guy ran till it burned the hot to a crisp. burned a hole in the board and the transistor crumbled to dust when i touched it. Its amazing what they survive.
Wow that hot really committed itself!
This is a terrific video - thank you for posting it! Very informative, this is something I have been wanting to do to my MPS 802 for a long long time. Thank you also for posting the graphics ROM. I knew the ROM existed but I couldn't find it until you made it available. Can't thank you enough, this video and the rom files are a valuable resource for those of us who still print using the MPS 1526/802!
Thanks! I had been wanting to do this one for a long time and just finally decided to do it. There was a lot more I wanted to talk about regarding the rom but figured I'd see if this even got any interest before I went down the 1526 rabbit hole lol. Anyway glad you found it helpful!
Looks great. I need to do this on my 1084S-P soon. My tilt is much more severe than yours was.
Great video! I’ve been restoring a lot of vintage 80’s keyboards lately but haven’t done an Amiga. I was wondering if a circuit board would be better than the film for an Amiga, but I think you made the right call. Hope you feel better soon and your doctors do well by you.
thank you :)
Instead of using bulky pliers you'd rather work with tweezers.
Hi I did actually switch to tweezers in the video quickly after trying pliers. :)
Tip for next time. There is something called low melt solder. You mix that in and it makes it so much easier to get the part out. Just don't use it for soldering.
Thanks I have some and totally forgot to use it.
@@electronictreasure4191 Also a better iron tip would be great, those default conical ones struggle to transfer enough heat per time due to too little contact area (round pin, round tip -> super small contact area). Thus you needed much solder even for the easier pins. A flat chisel tip would have been better, or a chisel tip with the main area contacting the board. Low melt would not been needed.
PS: would have helped for the soldering, too, especially those on the ground planes still seem kinda blobby and cold where the solder clearly hasn't wetted nicely.
No. That's what solder flux is for. Low melt solder is brittle and doesn't make a good connection. I strongly recommend good old leaded solder with flux. Low melt is only for removing components @@insanedruid3143
Thank you for the suggestions!

Which is the name of the cream, please ?
"salon care 40 volume cream"
Nice work.. I bet I could have soldered that membrane..😂
Oh that's great 😅 I have 128DCR as a primary machine too, so i modded mine sd2iec bit more radically - completely soldered out cassette edge connector, connected 5v usb power source instead )
Good job on fixing that Philips monitor 👏👏👏
thank you!
Had it on C-64KB FATBOY :)
Disney's BLACK CAULDRON from Sierra On-Line 😺👍🕹️. I remember playing it a little bit on my Amiga 500 as a kid back in the early 1990's. Since i still own the original Amiga 500, i wish, i could find that Disney classic game in the original box release and play it again 😹👍🕹️.
Nice troubleshooting. I enjoyed it. Regards from the Netherlands.
thank you
I just fixed my 1902A it had some bad solder connection on the flyback, while I had it open I installed a RGB mod I found in an old forum, after it soldered all the wires in noticed there is a socket on the main board for a scart connector but I cant find any info about it ? I see your board also has a scart socket to the right of the din connectors, it looks similar to the 1084
Well done. I'll have to look into that RGB mod. Would be nice to be able to use it with the amiga although I dont own one at the moment :(
😅👍
Neat trick! I don't have much of a use for this myself, I one of the greatest features of BASIC is that the programs are so simple that anyone can edit existing programs creating new features or just having fun with it without much of a learning curve! I do see how this could be useful if you were selling a program written in BASIC and had some extra RAM left over It could be used to protect the copy protection or something!
I have a 1902a monitor and when I turn it on and plug up my Commodore 64 to it and everything thing is on I get no picture I have turned the nobs and pushed some buttons but no matter what I do I still get no picture on screen and idk what could be wrong with it any help would be appreciated
If you dont hear or feel the crackle of the static on the screen then you probably have cracked solder joints around the flyback transformer. It could also be one of the raised up resistors on the board those also fail.
Ok thank you I’ll check it out when I can but thank you for the help

Nice video! Very beautiful board, every big chip is socketed. :)
Thanks yes this machine was a great find. same exact one i had in the 80s. Same MB with socketed chips. Surprised when I opened it.
vibe is cool
10:19 that black capacitor next to the 5w resistor is bulged
looks bulged in the video but not in person. maybe lighting.
This could only get better with a dual SID mod! :)
I like this.
I have that exact monitor. Never seen anyone else with it!
love the commodore, and i love this song, which i haven't heard in years! absolutely lovely rendition

Thank you algorithm gods, I have barely any idea what was going on here but I enjoyed this.
May the algorithm gods bless OP.
Did you fix the traces with lead? Wouldn't been better to jump cables instead?
Yes thank you. I laid a bare wire over each crack before soldering over the crack. thanks I forgot to mention that.
Sounds great :) Cheers!
Love is retro games on the Commodore 64/128 and Amiga 😺👍🕹️.
Nice fix & troubleshooting, I also have some weird issues with communication between floppy 1541 and c64, when I use 1st serial port I get a device not present message when trying to load disk, and when I plug in to the second serial port port of the floppy I get no video image on the c64, I do not have a logic tester and not even an oscilloscope, and not even a second c64 to make further troubleshoot, but I would like to know what do you suspect it would be?
Hi not sure but the second serial port sounds like its messing with the reset. Do you have any other serial devices to try such as a printer?
@@electronictreasure4191 Unfortunatelly not, I only have Datasette and Floppy Drive 1541
Ok let me do some research and see if I can come up with any ideas. Was the floppy drive previously working for you?
@@electronictreasure4191 No, I received it a while ago, opened it up cleaning and lubing and checked the belt and looks fine to me, it does the head movement (rattle) when turning on as it is the noisy head model, and red led turns off in a second and green led remains on.
ok try drive 9, 10, 11. Maybe previous owner changed the device number.
