If you wanted all of the bolt's throw available for your task, you could put the pawls on the inside of the mechanism acting on the center support member.

lol this video is old, but those were the transistors on the mechanical speed controller smoking due too the higher voltage. they need more cooling but the small heatsink cant provide that thats why it started smoking so much. The chassis you have here seems to be a Turbo ultima though with other wheels & tires.
