I'm a dice maker and self-proclaimed master of spacey bois, antiflorals, hella extra inking, and the infamous massively large badonkachonk!
How to paint dice: black gold effect
Dice painting! Or "inking", if you're cool. In this video I go over how to achieve a weathered and textured metallic effect I call black gold and ink it on one of my favorite designs, the Nebularis. I use one of my infamous badonkachonks -- a d20 about the size of a softball -- as an example, but the process and concepts are the same for any sized dice.
You can check out my instagram for more examples of different dice inking techniques and designs: thedicecraft

If you're interested in any of the paints and supplies I used, check out the links below. Most of these items you can find at any art supply store, but please note that I get a small affiliate commission on the amazon link sales.
Textured matte black base:
The Terra Cotas in particular are great if you don't like mixing your own colors as much. For acrylic gouache I usually only use their black.
- Liquitex Acrylic Gouache, Ivory Black - amzn.to/3Nu5EqU
- FolkArt Terra Cota, Obsidian - amzn.to/3ayHpt2
The "DecoArt, Texture Sand Medium" is currently not on amazon unfortunately, but a good alternative is Vallejo's Grey Sand - amzn.to/393mNZv . Vallejo's entire texture line is great and I'll do more videos on them.
Washes:
- Black wash:
--- Liquitex Acrilic matte medium - amzn.to/3moff6l
--- Liquitex Flow aid - amzn.to/3Nr1i3C
--- Liquitex Carbon Black acrylic ink - amzn.to/38Vc2by
- Dark bronze tinting:
I can't recommend Golden's paints enough. I use them for my standard base and metallic inkings and most of my effects use them. This particular effect uses a bronze but definitely check out their other iridescent metallics (full set below).
--- Golden Fluid Acrylic, Iridescent Bronze - amzn.to/3H7Dek9
--- Golden Fluid Acrylic, full set of iridescents - amzn.to/3GUcpj3
Bright bronze dry brush:
- FolkArt Brushed Metal, Bronze - amzn.to/392xb3L
Supplies:
- Set of round brushes (5 sizes) - amzn.to/3MgJhn7
- Small paint trays with 6 wells - amzn.to/3atjz1u
- Pipettes - amzn.to/3mfRCgv

Polish resin to a glass finish, no special tools
Переглядів 39 тис.3 роки тому
In this video we go over the most basic materials and technique to get a glass finish on any resin pieces with flat sides, such as dice. There's no cuts on the actual sanding and polishing process so you can get a sense for how long it takes to polish. I'm using as an example a small packet of finishing supplies I sell along with my dice (you can learn more at thedicecraft or www...
will you ever show how you did the liquid center dice?
Get a mini pottery wheel. A dab of rubber cement to hold the paper and boom, easy life. The wheel is cheap af.
How do you cut such a film and squeeze it? No matter how many times I try, I can't get a smooth and beautiful rotation of the core.
dont know why, my dice are not that shiny like yours. even i did the same thing. They dont got the "Crystal-glasy "look. Do you have an Idea whats the reason it can be for this problem?:/
What do you use to paint the numbers in at the end of polishing the dice ~
4:52 omg that noise made me cringe!!!!
I guess you’re not doing this anymore. Your website is messed up and your store is closed.
i followed this method exactly to a T, yet my resin still wont get shiny and is staying matte- is there anything im doing wrong?
Does the polishing compound fade away easily over time, or is it long lasting?
Hello, I going to make a 30mm D6 dice mold. Would I need a reservoir in the cap for a die that size?
Me: Oooo! I want to make this die! 10 seconds into the video. "You need to buy dice." Me 11 seconds later: Pauses leaves in disappointment.
This has been the only method I have found that works every time. Short, simple, no bs. Awesome job.
sanding is easy with giant dice. lol try it with a mich smaller 20 sided, takes a million years.
I got a bike pump but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect it to my pressure pot :(
I would recommend going back and forth at first because with dice like the d20 it's very easy to hit those edges accidentally and turns your dice into a ball by the end.
Thank you so much, easy to follow, the other people that video polishing have it speed it up so it takes a long time to get it, you are the best
how is your not more popular?! Amazing opening and clear and direct guide!
i really wanted to know what type of resin you use!
fantastic video!!
For anyone that uses a dremel, please use the wider polishing round. It's super easy to hit the die with the rotating shaft and then you get to start all over.
😂 mejor explicación no puede haber, muchas gracias por la info, que paso con este proyecto?
Thanks for the video! How is this not sanding off the numbers?
This is awesome. Could you make one of the resin casting process please ?
Damn your dices are beautiful. Make a full tutorial please? I want to know your entire process.
I would love to see how you get some of the effects in your dice. That would be a great video to make. Or um one on the different kinds of silicone and what to know before you start trying to make dice.
this is the best video I have seen on mold making. thank you very much for making it. I have a question. I am new to making mold with a master. Each time make a mold it looks great until I dod my first dice in them and they the dice come out with what looks like little nubs and the mold is full of pits that left those on my dice. Do I need to use something like inhibit X or is there something else I might be doing wrong that is causing it. I had my master for about 4mths before I had time to do anything with them so I would think that the sulfer on the surface wouldn't be an issue but I am just not sure. Again love your tutorials.
Are you casting under pressure? If you are, your mold needs to be cast under pressure as well -- otherwise what happens is the mold has micro bubbles in it and when you put it under pressure the bubbles burst / poke out on the inside of the mold, leaving those nubbly or pin marks. Otherwise, reach out to me on insta and send me a photo and I can help troubleshoot better.
How often do you change the paper due to it wearing down? I am finding I have to switch sections after barely finishing one standard d20
What kind of paper and at what point? Usually sandpaper or zona papers last a good amount (at least going through 1-3 full sets of standard sized poly sets) but only if they're being used at the right time. For example, green zona papers or a 800 grit sandpaper will get destroyed if you don't have a flat face and what you need is to actually use more like a 400 grit to start, then move it to 800 grit.
At the higher grits like 2500, I find they get worn down real quick.
@@OdinsMusings ah that's odd, usually the finer grits would last longer. What are the grit steps you do beforehand leading up to the 2500?
Thank you for the video! Definitely gonna be using this for some resin earrings I'm making!
Great video. How do you make the master part?
waiting for liquid core video
Hey I love the dice, what size are they are want size ball do you use :)
What size fittings would you use for a "standard" size die?
Do you have a pour video for this set? Because they…are…BEAUTIFUL!
This is probably the best tutorial video I have ever seen… absolutely amazing job.
I just saw a reel in instagram and i fell in love with your dice. Damn, we can clearly see the comitment and care you have to create them. Really good job, man
Wait. Where did you get the original chonk? How am I supposed to make monster dice without and original chonk? 😭
Get one 3D printed! You can also start making molds by using dice you might have lying around.
@@dicecraftx it's all good. I found a 55mm big boy online lol
@@IngeniousOutdoors link?? 🥺
If I were looking to make my own custom dice with custom faces, how would I go about that? Would you recommend I use a 3D printed mock up of the dice to make a mold or is there a better solution/alternative?
You first need a 3D file, then you need to print it, then you need to finish it. For 3D files there's tutorials on youtube for using Blender as well as some tools online that allow you to just pick a font and size and render your cad file. For 3D printing it should be a resin print so it can be finished and polished. You can print yourself, look on etsy for 3d printing services (there's some that specialize in dice), or use a service like shapeways. And for finishing it's generally removing supports, flat lapping the faces then progressively sanding each face up to about a 2500 grit and then polishing with compound.
Amazing work and amazing teaching skills bro! I love it. Thank you! Btw, do you sell the molds? I'll like to buy if you do 🤗😄
Not at this time!
Oo nice. Doing this to all 20 sides must take a long time
Hi! You're video reached all the way to the Netherlands :), i really enjoyed it and now i'm inspired to try it myself. Two questions: - of course i need a dice in order to make a mold. In what program did you design it? - i saw that you used ornaments for the liquid cores, I want to start small with regular dice, how to make them beautiful/have a liquid core?
I think I designed the geometry in blender but now I'm using Fusion 360 for this kind of work. For small dice liquid cores there's small glass orbs you can find on amazon that are usually used for pendants.
Hey man this is that guy from the Instagram message. Good work keep it up. I have a product in the works that could use your plasma goo stuff. Will credit you for sure
how did you make your master? what material you used? acrylic
It's 3D printed resin!
Are you still planning on making the casting video? This molding tutorial is so well done; I must have watched it a dozen times so far. Can’t wait to see what you do with the casting video.
I've got it halfway done just haven't had a chance to get back to it! Thanks for the kind words!
@@dicecraftx I'm so excited to see this. Thank you!
So beautyfull brother for sell? Can't i buying this stone
Just found that the double-sided gel tape you linked for the sprues inhibits silicone. Not sure if what you got did, but the stuff I just got did.
Oh no, sorry to hear! I just checked and for some reason it was linking to a standard doublesided tape and not the thick vynil one I use. I've gone ahead and updated.
@@dicecraftx Figured I'd give a heads up.
will you post a tutorial on these? the dark one is memorizing!!!
I was wondering were did you get your big dice so that you could have it for the mold making process
I had it 3D printed in resin!
This is SOOOOOO good and detailed tutorial, thank you for your work!

Mesmerizing!
