One week on the Bavaria C42 from 2021 in Greece, sailing from Athens to the Kyklades and back via Aegina, on a 200 nautical miles trip. Lots of action, since we had issues with our anchor (Thanks a lot to Christos from Sea Novels for the quick help!) Also one neighbouring yacht ran aground at night and it took us almost two hours to get their yacht off the rocks. If anyone has experiences with ...

Good review! I'm not too sure about that nav station position.... I prefer the new generation designs personally, 44, 48
Thanks for your comment! I didnt like this one either, but there were different saloon layouts with different nav stations for the 46 Open. Our next boat will have a port facing nav station, but next to the saloon table, which is better for map work anyhow. Couldnt check neither the 44 nor the 48 yet. But also curious. Need to try!
Could you please share what kind of dishwasher you chose? Thank you🙏
Actually I dont know (yet), what type of dishwasher it is, but I will know soon. Only I know, it is a "regular" slim line machine as it is used in house kitchens.
I would never buy a new boat. 5-10 year in good shape seems to be the sweet spot.
Hey @Mordalo, I had the same opinion until I really started searching for the yachts and I started negotiations. Many "affordable" charter yachts, the btter ones were really expensive and in the same price range of new yachts that even come with warranty. I think the market is already changing and soon your conclusion will be right (again).
@@janwantstosail Actually, my reasoning was more about problem shake out than anything else. Warranty is pretty much meaningless when I am 6K miles from where I purchased it., or dealer. 😉😉
@@Mordalo agree, also that was my original reasoning. Now we bought a yacht with an already higher hull number with already some upgrades/improvements. Mulan is being built by one of the biggest yachtbuilders in the world with bases everywhere. We agreed to have a full yacht check in Las Palmas and then again in Grenada. If something warranty related happens on the way, I send a message what is broken and they try to get the stuff to the next base again and fix it there. Before we take off, we also will do some days/weeks of sea trials. All that made me more confident, that we can try this tour with a new yacht.
Great video Jan. Why a mono cruiser should be less comfortable at anchor than a performance cruiser or racer makes little sense though. Guess you are going with the Nautitech 44. In that case its not overlapping genoa but selftacking jib right? All the best
Hey, thanks a lot for your comment! I sailed on numerous monos and cats and I always felt much more comfortable on cats at anchor and this for multiple reasons: When waves or swell come from the side, monos tend to rock more than cats, Also on cats you have much more space to walk around, some nice trampolines to relax in. If you have a flybridge or skylounge, you have a great view up there as well. We have space to hang up and sleep in hammocks. Another benefit is, that the main living area is all up above with a good visibility all around through the anchorage. For the kids it was great to jump off the coachroof and when the sun is burning we were swimming between the hulls. Also usually cats have a shallower draft, so you can get closer to shore. In the evening, it is easy to lift up the dinghy and to lock it in place. Well, This sounds really biassed,.. I also love to be at anchor on a Mono and I also really enjoy that, so it sounds more drastic than i mean it. And we did Not go for a Nautitech, but another performance cat with aft helms. ;-) Length waterline: 44 ft, LoA: 52 ft,.. Also we have an overlapping genoa plus a huge code 0. I can't wait to hoist the sails!
@@janwantstosail I agree with your cats vs mono argument at anchor. But your charts showed +es on racers and performance cruisers. Outremer?!
@@user-sj2nr2jh1u In my eyes this also applies to performance cats/racers. No skylounge/flybridge though and less comfortable seating. But trampolin is great there as well. No Outremer. 😞 We were searching for an Outremer 49 but coldn't find one on sale. We checked the Outremer 45 but this one was really, really small for us. I am just 1,80m tall and I hit my head in the cabins,.. The Outremer 51 also is surprisingly small (and already financially out of range) and the Outremer 55 is far out of reach already.
@@janwantstosail sounds like a HH
@@hamkahamid2044 no, also no HH. We have no raised helm, but helms at the aft of either hull. Although I like them a lot,..
For more information about the yachts that I refer to, check the links in the video description. Let me know, what you think. Am I right with my conclusions?
I sticked a Z-Profile over the little aft window and no more water came in from above unless rain came from behind in the harbor.
Strange, same boat both engines 2500 RpM give me 10+ kt. Might depend on the centent of the water and fuel tank.
Something wrong. I habe the same boat and with 2 engines at 2500 RpM. I make 9 kt. One engine 2300 gives 6,5 kt. Brige deck is much higher than most of the other catamarans.
Hey Manfred, vielen Dank für den Kommentar! Is this yacht not available with different engine options and different props? I should have chhecked the setup on this yacht. And you are probably right, I did not encounter any bridge deck slapping, but we also didnt face high seas. Usually had caln waters.
@@janwantstosail I have 50 hp and folding prop.
@@manfredgrobel2068 we were quite loaded with 10 people and most time had full water tanks and full fuel tanks, but I cant imagine, this is the reason. The hull was ok (not really clean, but also no barnackles),.. good question,..
@@janwantstosail OK, I am just with my wife on board and I do not carry more water or fuel as necessary. So weight explains nearly all.
Yes, makes sense. How is your overall satisfaction with the yacht? You agree to my observations? How is the build quality of your yacht? Cheers and thanks a lot!
What a coincidence! I have booked the same boat for my first family sailing trip this summer.
You will have a great time on her! Enjoy! ;-)
I LOVE BALI Cat's. 5.4 very good for chartering business
Agree, for Charter especially for bathing holidays with family they are great. Tons of space, different seating/lounging areas,..
Hello , I noticed that the saloon table was not equipped with an integrated bar. Did you find the shorter stainless steel table legs to convert it into an additional bed ?
Hello Steve, thanks for your comment! I could not find any other legs. As far as I remember, the tables on this boat could not be adjusted. Cheers!
This boat offers so much more than the lagoon 46 yet the resale price speaks of the unspeakable.
Every boat is a compromise and to put a ton of people onto a boat, you automatically end up with bad ventilation and smaller cabins which again lower the value for private owners after charter. The Bali 4.6 is not eversyone's cup of tea. in my eyes it is purely a charter yacht for family holidays or a swimming party platform. And there she delivers almost like no other boat of that size.
There's one here in the marina in my town in Spain. It's for charter, but the reviews of the Bali 4.6 on their homepage are so bad, that they're now selling it after only one season. 1,5 million euros they paid, and it's for sale for 1 million euro. Half a million down the drain! 😢
Well, I wouldn't be that harsh on her, but 500K difference in once year is painful,.. (I wouldnt pay 1.5 mil for her in the first place!)
So you think I would go for the lagoon 46 instead ?
Hello @@hatemtawfik, thanks for yoru comment! I once sailed the Lagoon 450F for one week and I did not like sailing on her. At Anchor it was great though. I never had this indirect rudder feel before and after and i asume, the Lagoon 46 will be similar. Also it depends, what you want to do. For family holidays the Fly is great, for ocean crossings only with a sport top, because with the Fly the boom is really high and it is hard to put the sails back into the lazyjack. Now we are in the buying process with another yacht, which I consider having the best of those and the Nautitech 46. and as I see it for now without the downfalls of either of them. Stay tuned, as soon as the handover is done, there will be many new videos!

Hey Jan, one of my favorite catamarans is the Catana 50 footers (not Bali), but like this Nautitech they also have the exposed exterior dual helms which kinda kills the whole boat for me. Questions 1) One of my biggest problems is fear of someone being on a night watch and falling off the boat from the helm in those precarious positions. Do you think that's a realistic fear or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? 2) Do you perceive any way to build durable Bimini that might make the helms more bearable? It seems like the potential for interference with sheets is pretty high unless you keep it simple (as in this Nautitech). Thanks
Hey Matt, Thanks for your comment! To your questions: 1.) I totally share your fear and this is actually also one downside of those aft helms. (No, you don't make a mountain out of a mole hill in my eyes) I would feel much more comfortable with more boat behind me and a more protective backrest/structure, not with flimsy reiling lines, which even cover quite some distance. You feel safe towards the front, but don't look back, when big waves are rolling in! ;-) Also the movements at the aft tip of the boat are more intense then e.g. on a central helm. When discussing this topic with Excess dealers (They also have aft helms), they stated: "It is just like on normal monohulls" . May be true, but for ocean crossings on a mono, I also would prefer a center cockpit over those aft helms. The main advantage with aft helms is in my eyes, that you can see the whole crew at any time as long as they are not down in the hulls and docking can't be any easier. Yes, can see sails better and you have a better feel for the rudder, but therefore part of the view is blocked by the superstructure. 2.) Well, when sailing long distances, the autohelm does 95% of the steering (in normal situations). so you can be out of the elements in "normal" conditions anyhow. In the rain I sometimes steered from inside with the remote control. The aft helms are far apart, so you just sit on the side, where you get the shadow from the Main or from the roof. Against rain, there is no much protection with those tiny umbrellas and I don't see, how you could properly enclosure them without sacrificing boat handling. I would not want to be there in a storm, when big waves are running in though. I am still puzzled, which yacht we shall go for. Time is ticking,..
@@janwantstosail Thank Jan, I really appreciate your thoughts, The only boat that checks all my boxes is the Catana 50 OC. It's a performance boat with a more interior helm and yet relatively comfortable. The problem is there are only like 5 of those in existence and so you're pretty much buying one new and I would rather not be the guy absorbing the steep initial depreciation of a new boat. I will probably end up settling for a less performance based boat. Thanks Again
Hey@@mattclark6482 You are welcome! The Catana OC 50, you mean the new one (with garage door and half elevated helm) or the older one with the helm aft? For me it is the Neel 51 ticks all boxes, but she is currently out of my range 😞. The runner up for me is the Outremer 49, which could get into my budget range, but currently noone is for sale (If anyone wants to sell an Outremer 49, please contact me!!!. ) For pure sailing sensation, the Neel 45 was the best so far, but my wife doesn't like it and I agree, it is quite mimimalistic,... Either way, a yacht is always a compromise. I always wanted to check a Catana 47, but also here I had the concerns with the helm aft. Also with remaining budget constraints, the boats also get less performance based for me.
@@janwantstosail Sorry, I'm responding in the wrong place. I was referring to the Catana 50 OC (Ocean class). I don't think it has a garage door (more of a big sliding door), but yes it has a more Outremer like interior helm. Outremer is certainly the boat that everyone wants, they just seem cramped to me. I think your Neel review was excellent and I agree I need to give that more thought.
@@mattclark6482 please wait with offers until I got the go-/no-Go from my wife! ;-) We want to buy a yacht within the next 5 months. If you wait till May 2026, you could buy our boat then!
Is it just USB? No plugs?
There are also power plugs in the cabins, but there are more USB plugs distributed. To which time in the video do you refer here? Cheers!
Thank You for the very thorough review. I don't think anyone buying this boat is seriously thinking of sailing upwind, this is the ultimate condo-cat and that has a lot of appeal to some people (possibly me). In the sailing yacht vs. motor yacht discussion, this is essentially a motor yacht that leans into sailing. When put in that context it becomes a lot more likeable. My biggest concern is whether you really feel like you're sailing or are you so ensconced in luxury that the joys of sailing are substantially muted and you might as well be on a motor yacht.
Thanks for your great comment! I felt, and i mean it in the best possible way, like on comfortable driftwood. Yes, she sails, maybe not even as bad as it sounds in my review (i am a spoiled brat in regards of sailing), but she also is not as fast as motor vessels. If you have time and you want to drift with the wind along the coast in comfort and zip a cocktail in the shade on the rooftop of your floating condo, this is the yacht for you. Since I love the sensation of sailing with speed like a good handling dingi, she is not for me. (Maybe I will think different in 30 years though) ;-)
@@janwantstosail Well Put! Sounds like the automatic transmission of the sailing world, it gets you there but you're fairly disconnected from the experience. Thanks again for the review.
@@mattclark6482 yep and this year we will do the first big transition! We will buy a yacht soon,.. Will upload more videos soon. Cheers!

Probably best to rent hotels rooms and not yachts All you did was complain
Hello @davidhenderson433, Probably there is a misunderstanding. I intend to show everything as I see it. I point out what I like and what I dislike. It is my honest review and I try to help others, who intend to buy or charter one of the yachts, that I review. It is not meant as complaining or bashing, actually the opposite is right: The yacht is great for family holidays as we did and I think, I pointed this out quite often, how much we liked it. I also would pick this yacht over hotels every time. This yacht was the right pick for us for this week. That being said, I am personally searching for other type of yachts, that are more seaworthy and also more agile.

As a proud owner of the Lagoon 42 and very happy with the finishing and the after service. I was thinking of upgrading to 4.6 but the issues of ventilation and poor sailing performance are really worrisome 😢. On the hand, this boat looks amazing, as good as the Lagoon 51
Hey @hatemtawfik, which model year of the Lagoon 42 do you own? Happy to read, you are satisfied with the quality and service! I chartered a Lagoon 450Fly in 2018 for a week in Thailand and it was great regarding space and comfort at anchor, but the helm feel was vague/indirect and for the sailing experience it was more at the lower end of cats that I chartered so far. The 4.6 is quite similar, only has a much larger flybridge and a forward cockpit, which we also extensively used. Wouldnt take either for a circumnavigation, but you can have great family holidays on both! Didn't check out the Lagoon 51 yet, since Lagoons went out of my focus because of the reasons above,..
@@janwantstosail 2022 but delivery was in 2023. The build quality is superb I must say. Lagoon apparently listens to owners' comments and the after sales is simply superb. According to the FB group, the build quality has dramatically improved from the 2017/2018 models, but the price of the Bali is so much lower.
Great to hear! I am currently thinking about an Excess 14, which also belongs to the same group. Build quality is paramount,.. do not want to get lost at sea,.
Ventilation poor is a dramatic understatement! We charters in the Grenadines, half of the crew slept outside as was intolerable below decks. The boat was designed to stay plugged in at the dock! If your generator worked you could run AC but who wants to listen to that at anchor. We chartered the 4.4, the the household fridge runs on AC powered through the inverter and is very in efficient. The hatches (4) 2 in the forward sail lockers and 2 in the forward birth stbd and one in port head opened backwards and thus were essentially useless. I personally would not charter this boat again ever! As for sailing, it just doesn’t!
With us also most people slept on deck too. Fortunately there is enough space ;-) also it was not so freakingly hot, when we were on the way. I agree with all your points, nevertheless we had great holidays and the kids loved jumping off the coachroof, the mid-aged had sundowners on the roof terrace and my 80+ years old parents had a comfortable time underway in the forward cockpit. I think, the owners version will have a better ventilation though. You surely should not take this yacht, if your focus is on sailing.
Very, very nice boat. Only the raised helmsman position is unacceptable. As a result, the boom is too high.
Right, but it really depends, what you want and where/when you sail. For a family charter with sea monkeys it should be OK. I dislike, that the bimini top only has slim stripes to walk on and that entering the top gets dangerous in waves. I suppose, that many charterers will not often hoist the mainsail,..
Very, very nice boat. Only the raised helmsman position is unacceptable. As a result, the boom is too high.
Yep, agree, although this could be improved with better stairs to the bimini andnalso a more wide/more stirdy walkway to zip/unzip the main sail. Not for ocean crossings but great for family holidays. Each yacht is a compromise, there simply is no perfect yacht,..

When we can expect the video? Very promissor !
Still on the boat, now at anchor at Port Grimaud, will return home next weekend. Probably the video will be done the week after. Cheers!
Thanks a lot for the objective an valuable assessment! One thing I keep wondering with regards to catamarans is the size of the holding tank. I cant imagine voiding them in an anchor bay but I also would think it would make sense to be able to stay for a few days at the same place before leaving for the sole purpose of voiding the black water tank. So my question would be, how large are the holding tanks on this boat, how many grown ups and children were there and how long did they last until they were full?
Hey Steffen, we were out on the open sea every day, so we could not check that. But I think, the tanks have a reasonable size. Can look up the sheets and compare them to other known yachts too. Anyhow, where we plan to go, the holding tank will not be critical. In the Baltic sea, this is a serious topic though.
@@janwantstosail Thanks! Do you have an estimate, though, how much holding tank volume per person per day is required?
@@ExAfricaNovi uh, nope, sorry. I also was never in the situation, that the holding tank was full. If I would have to guess, I would say, ca 2-4 liters per person per day. I just checked, The Neel 45 has 50l so with 2 people it should be fine for a week. With 10 people and lots of good food and drinks, one day would be the limit, but as said, I never experienced that.
Ah, the Nautitech 46 has 2*60l=120l. Should last some time then.
Thank you!!
Hallo Jan, tolles Review!
Hallo Matthias, vielen Dank!

@@janwantstosail Honestly, I’m still learning so much and my choice seems to change monthly. The audience teaches me so much. I have the benefit of so many deeply experienced sailors, many of whom have differing opinions. As a result I get a well rounded perspective…but it shifts. Lol.
@@navalgazingatcampdavid well, I charter yachts every year, also I sometimes work as sailing instructor for the german coastal skipper license. My thoughts also often change. Important is to know, what your NoGos are and also what you really need. From the yachts that you presented in the Neel 52 video, all are a good choice in my eyes, every one with pros and cons though, but none would be a dealbreaker fo me. It always is a compromise. And do never listen to people, who have never sailed on those yachts! Every time before charter, I read and watch every review, but real life is different. Sail yourself for a few days, if possible!
When I crossed the atlantic in an open 46 - I only sat at the helm for fun.
And how was it? Could you recommend the Nautitech 46? Any issues? We had some, as discussed in the video: leakages through sealant at the windows, broken bulkhead stb aft,..
@@janwantstosail Mine is new and has a stiffer hull and different salon layout. I don't have those leaks. I had two batches reseated under warranty. I have one more leak in am looking for. I still have another year of warranty. Sadly, I think finding install errors is normal for all boats.
@Kirk, thanks a lot for the quick reply! Install errors is normal, the broken sealants also were no showstoppers. Only the bulkhead was a red flag. During the whole trip I kindof felt that something was odd and not right. We reefed early and I did not feel so good, but couldnt name it until we saw the broken bulkhead back in the marina. Great weekender if you have the cash
Sadly that Dragonflys even second hand and a few years old are really expensive. On the other side, few boats can generate that speed and fun. As a weekender I would go for the smaller 32 ft, which easily fits onto a trailer and costs less than half.
A really fast racer/cruiser for weekends or holiday trips with a couple plus kids or occasional guests? This one starts at around €700k, can be specked up to €1 Mio+. The smaller versions are cool too but come for a fraction of the price and can even be trailered. What do you think about this "Speedboat"?
I've sailed on a dragonfly and the construction is solid. I'd love to see dragonfly with a 50ft version. Performance is pretty awesome.
Great to see you here...
TERRIBLE BUILD QUALITY. !! very expensive boats as well and leaking after 4 years and broken bulk heads !!!
At the BOOT 2023 in Düsseldorf I had a discussion with the sales representative for Nautitech and I was not the only one reporting the leakages. Hope, they find a sustainable solution for it. The bulkhead issue was unique (and desastrous) though. We need more reviews and comments to push the manufacturers to deliver a good quality. Attention helps for sure! Also he was happy to hear my other thoughts and the potential for improvement. The concept is not bad though in my eyes.
The leaking roof seems just the start ! After the fuel tank joke you wonder what else is wrong . I was going to but a new 44 but it seems either save some money and get the new leopard 42 or go big and look at a Balance or MC .
@@davidwebber6956 if money was no option, the choice would be much easier I would say. With our budget we still have to compromise unfortunately. As a kid I was sailing boat races and I simply dont like condomarans, which limits the choice even further. But I am an engineer myself, so there are many things I can fix or rebuild myself. So the boat must have a solid structure/good design and I can do lots of customization then. With unlimited budget I probably would go for an HH 55 or a Balance 526 ot maybe an Outremer 55. With a little more budget probably a Balance 482 or Seawind 1470. Only I still feel intreagued by the Neels, which still offer lots of bang for the buck.
Jan. I'm on a very limited budget so will probably land up with a 40 foot FP and enjoy the extra time sailing !
@@davidwebber6956 We may charter an FP 45 this year to check that yacht out. Many of them are on sale for more or less affordable prices. Our budget is not finally fixed yet, but the boat must safely carry 4-8 people around the world (and offer some sailing fun). Either way, the target is to start sailing and we still have 18 months to find the right boat for us! :-)
Your sailing performance was lacking because you needed the code zero, Genoa, or screacher. The main and self tacking Jib is only good in 20 knots of wind.
You are right. I always ask for more sails, but usually my requests get refused, although I offer to pay for them.
