    No, the paint on the pickups are to hide the phosphor bronze material, from view...the pickups come nowhere near the chassis block, the main problem was a the sprung keeper plate contacts..careful cleaning and service all thats needed..

    • @LetsMakeTracks2023
      @LetsMakeTracks2023 2 дні тому

      I can only speculate the contact as Im in need of a multi meter to check such things. But the paint did make the model function again last time.

    It just may be that the problem existed on the TT120 but was missed then was put back in repaired stock and unlucky you received it as a replacement. I would ask for the parts and do the repairs myself. Great video, Jersey Bill

      On inpection the tab was part of the chassis, so would need a complete dissambley. Have sent off to Hornby anyway so will see what they have done when it returns.

I would suggest to avoid this printer, spend a bit more and get another one. Bit i also wrote a review on the humbrol website uet the review jas never been pit ip in the web so im guessing someone at humbrol wanta to hide the problems. I think a lot of people are looking at this from a bit of a wonky angle: a lot of the time in the repair world, there will be a shelf full of repaired examples that have been returned to stock configuration. When your loco gets there, it will be repaired in due course, but it’ll go onto a big shelf of broken locos. The replacement will be sent to you from their ‘Repaired’ stock as such It’s likely not to be the same loco you sent in as that would take too long (in the eyes of a big company like Hornby, as apposed to your local in-house mender at the local model shop). Hornby have to do it in this less personal/more industrial style because they’ll be getting A LOT of through-put, probably a lot more than you think. I’ve no info if that’s what Hornby are doing in this instance, but it sounds like it by the way of your returned model being a different unit. I’m surprised they’re doing this with something personal as models, but efficiency will ALWAYS be a goal for a company because of the old adage about time equating to bunce. :)

    • @LetsMakeTracks2023
      @LetsMakeTracks2023 16 днів тому

      That does make sence and I do understand why they would do it this way. I am greatful for the replacement Im just a bit too sentimental and maybe thats giving off a negitive impression of my experience im not sure. But will see what happens when they return as the pacifics have etched plates attached which I have made hornby aware of.

    For a new scale it aint looking bright aint it? If that was one of my engines replaced I would have a FIT.. One of the reasons why N-scale is my thing...outside of the occasional 1:700 scale ship (I'm picky about which ones I get, and I have 2 to finish), RC car, 1:64 truck/lorry, or plastic military models. Yes the internals are simpler to maintain, but if the couplers fail...it's just a screw, I can tap, and replace the coupler box if needed, or replace the coupler it's self. I'd also like to advise, that seeing these videos gives me a heads up. NEM pockets failing? I'll just glue the darn thing on, as it'd be to costly to pay for customs to get the engine overseas & back, and as I do N scale, I only have 2 standards, both fall under the knuckle coupler. As for pickup issues...I regularly have to maintain my pickups due to the nature of my collection, I see this as a possible end to my UK sub-collection before it's even begun, as Hornby is the only one available here, and even then in limited numbers, but then again..there is Bachmann...I'm not gonna pretend that they make good or bad models because 3 of my flagship locomotives previously were Bachmann (A Santa Fe F7A, CSX GP40-2, followed by a Southern Pacific GS-4), so maybe I pay a lil' extra to gamble. Though, I also do have another issue...supply...it's easier for me to hunt down obscure inter-war era railroad equipment than it is to find any European railroad equipment, and a cheaper costs too, and that is excluding the Japanese...especially any Shinkansen...those seem to be as common as a certain famous group of articulated steam locomotives produced by ALco.

    • @BattleshipOrion
      @BattleshipOrion 15 днів тому

      @@LetsMakeTracks2023 Teething issues is a good way to put it, but one would think the manufactures test models before hand right? Like food & drink, quality control is essential. The nature of pick-ups are the thing I look for. I tend to trade detail & sound for an engine that I can work on. Means I don't get the newest model, but aswell. I'd rather have a runner than a museum piece I cant maintain because I'm afraid of it crumbling in my hands. The older the model too, the more reliable I find it to be.

      @LetsMakeTracks2023 16 днів тому

      My models did behave for almost a year befor I had any issues, And the other 2 I believe was an issue within my layout rather than a faulty model. Obviously I cant speak for everyones experience but mine so far has been positive regardless of the breakdowns. Like any full sized machine such as a car the locos need care and maintainance To stay at there best for longer. And at the smaller size certain elements are more delicate than there full size counterparts.

      @@LetsMakeTracks2023 thanks for your response. I recently bought some new OO scale items from Hornby, and had issues from the get go that are due to poor design/quality. I also follow some other channels and I hear almost everywhere folks complaining about Hornby. A loud minority of people with problems can easily look like a loud majority when viewed through the lensing of the interwebs. They produce these things by the thousands or tens of thousands. We see maybe a hundred people if that loudly complain... if there was a HUGE problem there would surely be a more vocal outpouring. Is not fun when something goes wrong and things do go wrong but it's perhaps not as massive as we think.

      @@trainskitsetc Thanks for your comment. I fully agree, however, if you have no reference to other products (Hornby makes almost exclusively British rolling stock), it's hard to form an opinion how Hornby compares to other products. I have a range of manufacturers that are in most cases vastly better in regards of design, engineering, quality, detail etc. that offer a significantly better value for the money. Since most folks in the UK build British themed layouts in OO scale, they probably have never seen HO scale products of the likes of Marklin, Fleischmann, Piko, Roco, Rivarossi etc. They may have OO scale rolling stock by Lima or Bachmann, who both make HO scale items as well. Both of these companies have evolved into making very nice products that I personally think are head and shoulders above what Hornby offers. I could go on and on, but I think I made my point...

    • @trainskitsetc

      @@tomsmaerklintrainlayout6742 difference markets and people within them value different things I guess, might even attribute the continued existence of OO to that, just as we may attribute the continuation of AC in HO to that. Very hard to say hornby bad or hornby good without appeal to deeply personal factors, even the engineering side, the quality side the detail side are as you say all relative and ultimately its a model of something it's not just a generic train and in many cases it is the only show in town. Having scratch built things anything RTR is a gift I'm kind of loathe to view too harshly. *probably gonna say how can engineering he personal, what you use the end product for is personal so the criteria to judge how well engineered it is are formed on the back of this. If you don't need a loco that in real life pulled 4 or 5 carriages to pull 20 because you are making a layout that is meant to look like a place then it not pulling 20 carriages is kind of irrelevant. Yet this is kind of the basis for a lot of complaints as to hornby products is "it can't pull this arbitrary test" when y'know maybe it's not aimed at doing so. Seen it work the other way as well where a UK modeller gets shocked at how much a US model can pull and it's kinda not shocking, it's engineered to do so because train lengths are generally longer there so to model that you engineer towards that. Lot of models are being misconceived as bad or good for doing or not doing things that the design brief wasn't meant to cover to begin with. The model is being negatively reviewed per toy standards or the toy is being reviewed per model standards.

    As seems to be the case a little too frequently, people are voicing concerns over failures and general quality issues. I've had a number of locos go back (which, as I live in France, costs Hornby a lot considering they organise a free pick-up and, obviously, return to France). There must be some point at which it becomes more cost-effective to increase quality control than to have disgruntled customers (who many not come back). There will always be some things that slip through the net but, nonetheless. I'm determined to stick with the scale by now but, unfortunately, I am tending to expect the worse and be pleased when everything is okay. Not quite how it should be...

      Well I am very pleased with Hornby, I have many, many TT 120 locos and chassis's fitted in other bodies (over 70) and not had one problem. Some chassis's I have cut up, ground metal away and still they run happily so nothing but praise for Hornby locos.

    My layout is going to be an urban setting and this will fit in nicely, thanks. My other problem is filling in the centre of the layout. Most other layouts have rolling hills and green fields but that's no good for an urban setting. Any ideas?

      For mine im extending the urban feel with terriced houses and other buildings. There is some good choice on ebay for 3d prints but will get pricey. The other option is printable kits that are scaled down to TT120.

    I think Hornby consistently under rate how popular BR Blue is both in OO and TT120. Id hoped that changed when Simon Kohler moved off , but I think we are seeing more of the same . So the items that are selling really well were the blue 08 and HST . So what does that say ………. As I understand it the forthcoming 37 will only be available in green and EWS, while the livery that would really sell is large logo blue . How about the forthcoming 47 in blue and blue grey Mk1s . A cohesive range would certainly get TT120 established more quickly . Well done to the guys for interacting with the community though and for yourself setting it up

    • @LetsMakeTracks2023

      Thank you. I do agree Blue 08 was an odd choice of the three, But It may be as simple as its the first to clear the current stock so instead of waiting for one of the others to sell out roll on with BR Green as was mentioned.

    Hi, for information regarding BR standards, some of the Standard 5's were green, usually the ones on the SR which later received ex King Arthur names. Also some of the Standard 2-6-2 tanks received lined green then just plain green. Some interesting comments there, it surprised me how quick a model can be designed to having it on the shelf.
