Lake birdlife update July 2024
10 July 2024 - latest visit to the lake to see the bird life, we have a family of Egyptian geese with 7 goslings, some coots, moorhens and a couple of ducks.

One of the ducks on the lake has managed to keep 3 Ducklings for almost 3 weeks! Normally any ducklings get eaten within a week by herons or pike or seagulls (it’s a pretty violent lake...) so she’s done extremely well to keep 3 of her original seven Ducklings. We have some new baby birds on the lake - the coot has finally hatched out their eggs, and the 7 baby Canada geese are now 3 weeks old!

We have some new baby Canada geese on the lake - they were hatched either last Friday evening or Saturday morning, so they are now (26 April) about 5 days old. There were 7 to start with and there are still 7 so all good!
Garden Fence patch-up

We seem to have had badgers getting into the garden overnight this past week, and they have been digging up the final resting places of our poor rabbits. I think the badgers have been getting in through the bottom of the fence behind the shed, so I am going to do bit of a bodge-job patch repair to stop them getting in. It’s not really worth doing a proper repair for lots of reasons.

We seem to have acquired a new duck - as well as the pair of mallards who have started visiting the garden for a feed, when I looked out this evening there was a Mandarin duck also in the garden that I had never seen before. We have tufted ducks nearby but I don't remember seeing a Mandarin duck here before. perhaps it's lost. Anyway, it got some bird seed...

Every evening now when I come home,the ducks are waiting for me - this is the first year I've managed to get out and feed them over the whole winter and so they are still coming back on a daily basis. on other years they have given up until later in the year. Swytch bike part 3 - battery fitting

Final part of the Swytch bike installation, fitting the battery mount and the display/controller unit. It proved quite difficult to fit everything on the handlebars as there isn’t much room, also the display mount is very small so wouldn’t fit round my handlebar, and my front bike light ends up behind the battery so that will have to move as well. Other than that, the e-bike conversion is working!
Swytch bike part 2 - pedal sensor

Fitting the Swytch kit pedal sensor to my bike. The pedal sensor is a set of magnets that rotate with the pedal, and the motion of these magnets is detected by the hall-effect (I presume) sensor that attaches to the bike frame near the pedal axle. The sensor detects pedal movement and uses this to switch the motor on and off as you pedal.

First step in upgrading my bike to a Swytch (electric) bike is fitting the front wheel, with the integral hub motor. I have to take off the old wheel and refit the tyre and inner tube to the new wheel. The new wheel is noticeably heavier than the old one!

Finally, after about 7 months (19 Dec 22, ordered in May) my Swytch electric bike conversion kit has arrived! I am not going to put it all together yet, waiting for some better weather, but it’s time for a look in the box to see what’s included in the kit. Also I have to put the battery pack on charge before first use.

from someone who does these "easy" calculation with a calculator every day for work it saves a lot of brains + removes any mistakes, you'd be surprised how many brain farts you get specially after long days of work.
He also calculated things like 0.5x3 or 18/3 soo...
