I'm looking for the perfect e-ink note tablet for me.
I'll be using it primarily for writing my scripts and notes for my other UA-cam channel, Hello From Hawaii. There are so many to choose from and it can be overwhelming at times. I thought I'd bring people on the journey as I figure out which one is the best for my workflow.

My Supernote A5X2 Manta Journey - After Two Weeks of Writing
I wanted to give a two week update after using the Supernote A5X2 Manta primarily for writing and notetaking. Lots of great things I'm discovering, even as a long-time Supernote user. I wanted to discuss some of the things I'm learning about the device, as well as my own user experience as someone who writes with it daily.
Disclaimer: Ratta sent me the Supernote A5X2 Manta to review. However, I've been a long-time Supernote user and originally purchased the A6X back in 2022, which I still use as my daily writing notebook.

7 Observations After 7 Days with the Supernote A5X2 Manta
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
After using the Supernote A5X2 Manta for a week, I wanted to talk about things that I've noticed about the device. It's a great device, but there are several areas of concern that have come up, especially as a long-time Supernote A6X user. Maybe others can relate if they also have both devices. I'm just hoping that people find this discussion helpful in their purchasing decision. Of course, as ...

I recently got the Supernote A5X2 for review. I honestly never thought I'd post another video on this channel since I've been happy with my A6X and I felt like there wasn't much else to say. However, I decided to dive into the Manta (pun intended) because I thought I could help people make a better decision on whether to buy it. This video isn't a review or unboxing. Instead, this video provide...

This is a one year review of the Supernote A6X. Is it worth it? I wanted to share my experience of the Supernote A6X a year or so after purchasing and using it. I think it's still great. I still use it for taking notes and writing scripts for my main UA-cam channel. I like the writing experience and continue to use the device. This will probably be the final video on this channel, but I just wa...
Supernote A6X - Has It Replaced My Notebook? (3 Months Later Review)

So after using the Supernote A6X for three months, has it replaced my notebooks? Well, yes. I've been using the Supernote A6X primarily for script writing and note taking for my main UA-cam channel, Hello From Hawaii, and it's been the perfect device for what I was looking for. I wasn't interested in an e-reader or PDF reader. I wanted something that I could keep my notes in and use for writing...

Why I Bought the Supernote A6X vs. the ReMarkable 2, Papyr, Boox, and Mobiscribe devices

What I'm Looking For in an E-Ink Notebook
Dude I loved your video. Thank you for being so candid.
Regarding the size of Nomad vs Manta… I largely agree, I got a reMarkable 2 and a Nomad around the same time, and for journaling/taking notes I found that the rM2 was larger than necessary. I found it was tiring to keep writing the “line length” of the rM2 without the line break (which was also a break for my writing hand/arm) that the SN Nomad provided just due to its smaller size. That being said, this year I found myself with a new use case that favored a larger screen - planner templates. These things are just on the large size as far their dimensions, and the Supernote note format doesn’t support zooming. My choices now are going with using my planner templates on my rM2’s larger screen, and forgo all of SN’s amazing features (blech) or go for the SN Manta. So for anyone considering having both Nomad and Manta, I think as time goes on you will likely have use cases that are specific for each size.
Reckon the A5 for home use journaling and for travel and on the move the A6. Love your style man, you make me smile ❤
Thanks. Glad you enjoy the videos. The workflow you describe is what I do. Manta for home. A6X on the go
the best pen is the Viwoods
I haven't tried it. What makes it so good?
Thank you for your honest review on Manta. I am trying to decide which one I shoud go for, Nomad or Manta. My main usage for the device is to use for my business using some pdf files as templates on the device and go for paperless. And I would be reading articles and books on the device. One problem is, as my eyes are aging too, I can only read without glasses about 45~50 cm away. I would prefer using a small Nomad as it would be much portable, but my usages (work templates for paperless and reading) may not suit for Nomad. I am not sure which one I should go with. If you were me, would you still choose Nomad?
Thank you for the question. It's hard for me to say, given I don't know how well you see and the duration you'll be using the device. For reading, the larger Manta may be better. However, like I mentioned, if you need the portability, I believe the Nomad is the better size.
Does the scale of the A6X2, when in landscape, more closely match the A5X2?
I'm not sure, but to comment on the scaling issue. I've found that when the document is created on the A6X, it scales poorly. When the document is created on the Manta, it isn't as bad.
I'm conflicted between a refurbished A6x (Nomad) and a new Viwoods. Could you review the latter please? I'd be interested in a comparison between these two.
Sorry, but I don't have the other device and have no plans on buying it.
Hi Can you translate your videos to other languages think you in advance
I believe there are captions on the video.
I completely disagree with this video. 😊
Thanks for watching
Completely? Do you disagree with every single point? Pull yourself together, man 🙃
If you like the "light pen" feeling you'll like this kit that's sold on Etsy that allows you to take the OEM Ratta ceramic pen replacements and put them in the classic Pilot G2 pen housing. It's awesome when I want to switch from my Heart Of Metal 2 pen..
Thanks for the recommendation on the pen. I'll go check it out.
Ooohhhh....
I prefer the A6 size, but what about that texture difference? Is it different enough that if I really want a paper feel I should get the Manta?
I can't compare the feeling of the Nomad to the Manta because I have the older A6X. Compared to that device, the Manta feels much better
Most people write with the device on a table, a knee, etc? I/ve had the A6X2 for a year...and I don't think I've ever held it with one hand while writing. Not sure I'd recommend a specific version to others though, in terms of size, unless they tried it for themselves.
Thank you for the comment. People should try it if they can. However, most people can't try it since it's not available in stores.
Although the video was mainly Manta vs Nomad, this was actually the most helpful video for me to decide between Manta vs Note Max. I was contemplating between the Manta vs Note Max for the past 3 days, but I didn't know about the wait time for a Manta was until you hinted at it in the video. I wanted to get my first e-ink tablet last year, and waited all of 2024 for the Manta, but then got conflicted because of the Note Max. I just can't wait another 2+ months for my first e-ink tablet. Honestly, after my research I wanted to get the Manta, but the timing just isn't right at this moment given the shipping times. Glad I found this video, although I wish I found it earlier because it would've saved me 3 days.
Glad I could help you make a decision!
I just ordered mine!
I waited almost one year and a half for the Manta. I have it now and I have been using it for two weeks, and I really like it. I use it for work notes, and it is great, but it has also make want to wriat every night like a diary,...and then, I feel that I would like to wrte ouside, and also draw. I have started to do it, and I see your point. And now I am really considering in getting a Nomad just for that personal use and keep the Manta for work... Thank you for your point of view
Thank you for sharing your experience. Also glad you see my point about how the A6 size may be better for more personal use. If you do consider the Nomad, I think that will be a great compliment to the Manta.
I think you've talked me into what I already knew but didn't want to admit: the Nomad might be the device for me, even though I feel like I "want" the Manta.
Just wanted to share some points to consider, especially in the heat of the moment when the Manta is the shiny new thing. Months from now, when the hype has died down, consumers will be looking at both devices and wondering which one to get. I just want people to know that they don't always have to buy the newest thing, but can still enjoy a quality product.
Sorry, what? I was too distracted by whatever's going on in the kitchen...
Thanks for watching
I ditched my HoM2 for a LAMY as well-except mine is an off-the-shelf EMR (no ceramic nib). Really sucks Ratta didn’t work with LAMY to get that erase button in their pens for the Manat. Biiiig swing and an even bigger miss. I’d have happily given them more of my money.
Good to know someone else switched to the LAMY. Maybe they will come out with a better LAMY in the future. For now, I like the weight and feel of the pen.
Your comments on the usability of the Supernote A6X2 are spot on with regards the convenience of size. Personally, I most frequently use the Boox Tab Mini-C. It has become my daily driver for both writing and reading. The device is excellent at both tasks. That said, it has become clear to me that Supernote has a much stronger dedication to its customer base and specifically, their commitment to product longevity. With Boox, you'll be lucky to get a single year out of their product before you suddenly realize it has either been replaced with a newer model or worse, not replaced at all. That is the case with the Boox Tab Mini-C and the larger Boox Note Air 3 (monochrome version). Both are great products. Both were released about a year ago. Both are now so obsolete, that Boox doesn't even offer them on their website. Neither has a suitable replacement. Boox would argue that their new Boox Go 103 is the replacement for the Boox Note Air 3, but that newer device does not offer a front light. In my opinion, that is a huge miss. I enjoy reading at night and the lack of a front light makes that impossible. Not every environment offers ideal lighting, so reading or writing becomes impossible. The crux of the story is that Boox has no long term commitment to their product line and getting even a similar, albeit more advanced device, may not be an option. Supernote seems incredibly dedicated to their product line and it's longevity. What has held me back is the lack of a front light. I know that decision makes for a very slightly better writing experience, but the lack of a front light has held me back. I use my e-ink devices for both reading and writing. Both are equally important and I want that functionality on a single device and I want it to work regardless of lighting conditions. For me, that makes the Kindle Scribe an ideal solution except... it is only offered in a 10.3" format. The perfect Kindle Scribe would be the same device but in a Supernote Nomad or Boox Tab Mini size. I've also noticed that the latest Remarkable Pro device does come with some kind of front lighting, but much like you, I'm not willing to pay a subscription fee just to use the full functionality of a device I have already paid for.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences with the different SuperNote products. You have confirmed once again for me and my use cases that the Nomad is right for me. I'll be receiving my Nomad next week!
I'm glad the video helped. I can only share what I've experienced and I'm trying to talk about things that I'd want to know if I was trying to figure out which device to get. Again, Supernote products are great. I just don't want people getting something that will end up in a drawer in three months because they don't like using it.
Part of the improved feel is the plastic screen (under the FeelWrite 2 film) of the Mobius screen. It gives slight flex that’s more like a pad of paper. It also increases durability.
Good to know. The texture feels great
I just got my Manta yesterday. Took me 2 seconds to take that stretchy flimsy pen loop off. And no, that cheap plastic Lamy stylus is not a good solution. The nib is the same as the HOM2 or click stylus, but you're paying $85 for a piece of plastic that cost $10 to manufacture. HUGE rip off!
I prefer the pen loop so I don't lose my pen. While the LAMY may feel cheap, it's closer to a normal pen than any I've tried. Give it some time and you may change your mind like I did.
I will recieve my nomad on monday. This made me happy because i come from a note air 2. But for 3 years it felt to big for how I wanted to use it. Was really torn about what size to get... hopefully it is how I think it would be. This video made me feel better. But I am nervous 🙈🙈
Glad the video helped and hope that the Nomad works for you. Give it time in the beginning, even when it feels too small. Over time, you may grow to like it.
I have the new push up Supernote pen and it seems to fit the description of your suggested design. Light, simple, clicky, has a clip and relatively cheap. Should check it out
Maybe I'll check it out. The LAMY, however, feels like a winner to me 😄
Size really depends on your use case. I will be annotating a lot of PDF’s and papers with small text. I will carry it around to places as well, but mainly use it while placed on a table. I also always preferred larger devices. I currently have a Pro Max iPhone and a 16 inch MacBook Pro which I also carry everywhere.
It sounds like the Manta may be better for you and your use case.
Been obsessively watching e-ink videos for a while before nervously plunking down $$$ on a device. So I tripped upon your channel. You're too wordy, repetitive and so I find myself clicking off early. But this one was better. I see how you edit-cut more often to get to the points you want to make. Appreciate the work-in-progress!
Your story is my story from two years ago lol. I almost bought a reMarkable 2 because I didn’t know there were other options. The A5X was my ultimate decision and I love the hell out of this thing. Pretty sure there’s no bad options if you’re just looking to write. The Boox stuff is great if you want the whole Android suite, but I wanted a paper replacement. The organization from Supernote is amazing.
Glad you found the video helpful.
Do you write very small? I feel the nomad size is too small but I also like to write when I’m on the couch
I don't know if I write small, but I prefer the wide ruled template on the A6X and that works for me. The Nomad may feel small, but I've come to value the mobility and flexibility over screen space.
I got BOOX Go 10.3 as I didn’t want to wait 30-40days , I was hoping the writing texture would be more closer to paper but it’s not as I expected. In comparison to supernote manta which one feels more like paper ? What is best tablet that gives you the most paper like feeling ?
Everyone is saying that the manta feels like a pen on a pad of paper(pad of paper is a softer feel), and the remarkable pro feels like pencil on paper(harder surface, but more pencil like experience). Those two are the only ones that i have heard feel like writing on paper. But two different types of experiences as to what materials when writing.
I don't own any other e-ink device so you'd have to ask another content creator who compares the tablets. I really like the writing experience on the Supernote and would recommend it even though I haven't tried the others. The feel of the newest generation of tablets for Supernote is great. The texture adds to the simulation, but don't forget to consider a good pen too.
What I like most about my Manta over my Nomad is the Manta's flexible screen (rather than the glass screen on the Nomad). It so more satisfying to write on. I always write on a table, so having more screen space is great for me and I can get my Manta in my handbag, so I can still take out.
Thanks for sharing. Glad you are enjoying the Manta writing experience.
When I was selling my Nomad to get Manta, I already knew I am going to miss this cool mobility factor. And I DO miss it. On the other hand Manta and its folio feel so light, that I am always carrying it around in the same way I did with Nomad. I don’t write in hand (seriously I can’t) and I love extra canvas. Manta shape feels so great in hand and it’s so slick. I wish that Nomad would be enough for me, but it’s not. But I understand your point and I agree that most people would be happier with Nomad if they don’t hit that screen estate limit. Nomad is this little friend, always with you ready for any wild adventure. Manta is more serious and distinguished colleague waiting for deeper focus.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Spoken like someone who has used both devices a lot.
My Manta comes Monday. The biggest test is eink notebook versus paper (and I prefer a composite notebook size (B5) which the Manta is close to). I have this feeling I'll be returning the Manta, but I'll give it a solid 3 weeks. I also will have the heart of metal 2 and the Lamy and I'll be returning one of them. I have Lamy fountain pens and i really like them, so I suspect that will be the route I take, but we'll see.
Give it a try and I hope it works out for you. Once the novelty of the device wears off, I'd suggest pushing it even harder to see if you enjoy using it in your daily workflow. It took me a while with my original A6X to find a place for it in my everyday writing. Glad I stuck with it.
I only write on a table, lap, or some such. I _read_ while holding it. But hold it while writing? That's alien to me. It's interesting that some folks write in the air, so to speak.
For me, I'm writing at an angle much like holding a small notebook. I hardly have the space and time to sit down and write on a desk.
*13:38** - TABLET SIZE* Its another case of use-case again, I have an A5X and have just ordered the A5X2 as my A5X is full, and need the expandability of the SD Card. However, if the A4X2 was already out... thats the one I'd go for. I need as much screen as I can get, many of my notes span pages with drawings etc and if I can get the whole note on less pages, all the better as its easier to digest.
Good to know that there is an audience for a bigger size like an A4. I'd actually hope Ratta works on a palm device next, but I know they've been discussing an A4 size for a while.
I picked up a used Remarkable 2 and Supernote Nomad a few weeks ago, and I have to agree with your assessment. For my use case, the Nomad replaces the paper notebooks I used to carry around with me, but now with better organization. It's definitely a great device for writing and perfectly fits my use case. Imagining the Supernote Manta as a Remarkable 2-sized Nomad reinforced that for me. I think it would be a great device for sketching (where the bigger screen makes a difference), and would be a great device to keep on your desk, but it's much less compelling as a device to run around with for me.
My ideal notebook size is B5 or about composition notebook size which the Manta is, roughly. I get it on Monday. We'll see.
@@t0dd000 Honestly, if you like B5, the Manta seems like it would be a good fit. I tend to prefer smaller notebooks (B6 is one of my favorites) and the Nomad is good for me. It's all about knowing your use case, and mostly boils down to personal preference.
I'm glad you found a similar use case. I originally thought that I'd like the bigger size, but I prioritize mobility more than screen size for writing. Sketching is a different story, though. If I drew, I'd like the A5 size.
Still waiting for mine. Taking for ever
Just got an email today. I get mine on Monday
Hopefully it arrives soon. Supernote tablets are worth the wait
THE BACKGROUND IN THIS VIDEO?
My house?
Thank you! I was all hyped and waiting for Manta since the beginning and was going to buy it, but now, after thinking about it for the second time, I might actually go for Nomad instead...
I really do think the A6 size is better for most people. At first, when I started using my A6X, I thought it was too small. Fast forward years later and it's the perfect size for my writing workflow.
Just commenting to represent those who personally love the aesthetic of the Vista! But yes beyond the looks, I found the ergonomics and weight superior to the samurai I received. Drawing for hours on end, I could not keep going with the heavier weight.
Glad to hear that someone likes the aesthetics of the Vista. But for me, it's the weight of the pen that sets it apart from the rest.
I just got a nomad and have a manta on back order. I’m sold on supernote. But still unsure about size. My main reason for getting it is marking up PDF manuscripts of books. It seems juuuuust doable on the nomad but feels like I could use the real estate. Having said that the nomad with leather folio is really pleasurable to use.
I like the A6 size. I prefer it for writing versus the A5 size. I tend to hold the device as I write. Maybe that's just me and how I prefer to write.
I have the HoM2 coming with the Manta. I think I might order the Lamy pen right now and return one of them. And I have Lamy fountain pens and love LOVE Lamy's look. :)
For the LAMY, it's more about the weight. I like how it feels so light.
I’m new to Supernote, just purchased the Nomad with the Lamy for work and I am really enjoying them. I was curious about the other pens offered. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you bought a Supernote. I prefer the LAMY, but the other pens might feel better to you. It's really subjective, but I prioritize weight so I can write longer. The LAMY is so light. I like it.
I absolutely love the Lamy Vista pen for the reason you pointed out (and I purchased two, one for my Manta when it arrives and one for my nomad). I finally decided to try the push-up pen and although not bad, it feels cheap, I see a lot of splitting at the base or breaking of the base. I’m going to try to replicate the push-up pen with the Lamy L212 Vista Rollerball pen. There is an insert you can get on Etsy to fit with a lot of different pens and they have an insert for a lot of pen styles.
Thanks for sharing. I haven't tried the push pen, but it's hard to beat the LAMY in terms of weight.
LAMY - fountain pens are fantastic. The ergonomics are really nice. I was searching for this kind of review before (I ordered mine). I write with fountain pens most often so I’m quite pleased my HoM2 - white. Thanks for this review.
If you're used to fountain pens, the metal ones will be fine. But for me, I write with plastic ball point pens at work so the full metal ones seem heavy.
Hey! I like your style of these honest opinions on Supernote devices. I sort of impulsively ordered Manta with Lamy Safari, probably I wanted to try something different after HoM2 (that I liked a lot). At first I started to doubt my choice and wanted even to try change my order, but EU shop replied they can only cancel it and I can order again. As I didn’t want to lose my order I sticked with it. Now some people who actually prefer Lamy Safari started showing up. After your video I started to believe I will be happier with it.
I think you will enjoy the pen, it has ergonomics design at the base and that really reduces hand fatigue.
@ it’s happening! Manta with Lamy Safari came yesterday and I can confirm it’s amazing to write and draw with it.
Give the LAMY a try. Like I said, I wouldn't have been able to convince myself until I tried it myself. I like the weight and feel.
Thanks for your video. It helped me to decide to go with the Nomad and Lamy pen. I hope to see more videos from you.
Glad it was helpful! I'll try to put out more videos soon.
I have some observations about the scaling. I noticed the 8mm shows larger than 8mm in real world on my Manta. Later, I realized, that's because the notebook was created from Nomad. If a brandnew new note is created from Manta, the 8mm is exactly 8mm. It doesn't resolve the scaling issue between Manta and Nomad, but if you want to use Manta as the primary writing tool, it might be worth to start a new notebook from Manta side, instead of continue using the old notebook from Nomad/A6x, so that the grid or line size is better?
Thank you for the comment. I'll have to try to create the notebook on the Manta and see. Great tip.
I believe that people should be making their own decisions not on what people say how. Some of you cause more concerns than ever
I agree. People should make their own decisions. Because you can't really try out the Manta, though, it's important to hear feedback from others in making a decision.
