Fantastic interview and discussion about the reality of horse auctions, preparing for horse care before you pass, legislation, multiple tags on horses, the ups and downs of "rescue." Tawnee is incredibly strong, a visionary, and pro-active beyond words. Horse Plus is a remarkable rescue. I did not know that horse slaughter existed or the horrors of it nor did I know about race horses being sent into the slaughter pipeline. For some reason, I was recently drawn to videos on the glorious Secretariat. Little did I know that even top race horses could be sent to auctions! Let's continue viewing animals as our much needed companions instead of money making machines or milking machines or dairy.... And ice cream....! The cows....

Horse meat sushi or sashimi (basashi or umasashi) It actually is a delicacy in Japan. I do not understand animal cruelty. It should be an automatic, humane, empathetic, reaction to help or care for any animal in distress. Animals are amazing and we are lucky to share this planet with them. HPHS sets the example others need to follow.

1:02:35 Unfortunately, there are people who don't understand the scientific process by which these horses are evaluated upon intake and bad mouth Horse Plus Humane Society because they euthanize or are given "the last act of kindness" as it is called by HPHS to more horses than they feel is necessary, let me emphasize the word 'feel', and reiterate there is nothing scientific or objective about feelings. To help mitigate negative responses from these emotionally overwrought individuals I leave this explanation on their buyout intake videos to explain the process that goes into the life-or-death decisions for these horses. The following is why Horse Plus Humane Society has above average euthanasia numbers. Because Horse Plus Humane Society receives a "few" emotional and or anger filled comments I have decided to put this out there. First of all, if you're new to the channel please, subscribe and comment, that said have you watched their intake videos? If you haven't done so and you're about to leave a comment to what you've read on the internet, please perform your own objective research before making a knee-jerk reaction filled comment presenting an argument based solely on feelings or emotions instead of science-based evidence. Please learn to discern fallacy from facts. Each month Horse Plus Humane Society receives high numbers of neglected horses from horse traders, private individuals, kill buyers, slaughter trucks and yes, the Amish community. Most are in pretty rough shape and were either not given minimum care including food, water and shelter, necessary vet care, euthanized or all of the above. Many are often sold at below slaughter price to squeeze that last dollar out of their animal instead of taking the correct action in the first place. During the monthly buyout programs HPHS does not discriminate, they buy everything off the trucks and trailers regardless of condition, whether they're adoptable, needing rehabilitation, refeeding or euthanasia aka the last act of kindness. Upon intake each animal is triaged, given proper vet care including, microchipped, wormed, vaccinated, teeth floating on really bad cases, onsite bloodwork and radiographs, as well at a later date any necessary surgeries, teeth floats, castrations and farrier care. Critical animals are given priority. Only after objective medical evaluations includes long-term quality of life are decisions made, if there is a possible optimistic outcome, even if that just means a less than 10% chance of recovery, they continue with treatment like surgery, physical and drug therapies. Owner surrenders are handled the same way. Now ask yourself, would you rather Horse Plus Humane Society were selective and took only medically sound animals in adoptable condition to keep euthanasia numbers down and let the rest ship to slaughter?

Its not just racehorses that end up at auctions, and go to slaughter. There are ponies, mules, amish draft horses etc. They are catagorized as livestock, so they are not thought of as sentient beings. Legislation needs to change.

There is a lot more in Thoroughbred racehorse rehome market than what Tawnee is portraying, increasingly over the last 20 yrs. There are at least 85 facilities & orgs nationwide. But there are bad apples in every horse industry. The biggest number of horses in the pipeline are Quarter horses, Paints, Gaited, Drafts, Minis, & donkeys. People just need to stop making more horses for the most part, for about 3 yrs. As Ive always said "Dont stand in the middle of the river with your arms out, trying to stop the flow of water. Get out of the river, & go up the hill, to where the creek begins - the breeders."

@@janeraymond5214 That’s what Horse Plus Humane Society has been doing for more than 20 years. The illegal horse slaughter network in the state of Florida is a multimillion-dollar industry, is ORGANIZED CRIME" said Kudo. "These people are extremely dangerous, and they need to be stopped." Horse meat has been historically prevalent on the black market in south Florida, where some cultures consider it a delicacy, driving the demand for it. BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - A disturbing case involving the alleged illegal slaughter of horses for meat happening in our own backyard. Animal activists tell FOX 13 they want law enforcement to shut down the farm where at least one horse has been butchered. FOX 13 has been investigating the black market horse meat trade in Florida for months and has obtained exclusive video, centered around a case in Hernando County. Law enforcement, lawmakers and animal activists working undercover tell FOX 13 the illegal horse meat trade is now all over the state, including one unregulated and unlicensed farm they discovered in Hernando County. Activist Richard Cuoto, who goes by ‘Kudo,’ founded Animal Recovery Mission more than 15 years ago. It started with his first rescued horse, Freedom, who he saved from an illegal slaughterhouse in Miami more than 15 years ago The horse in the video was Funny Biz a 2019 mare. We really want to believe that if most people knew, this industry would be shut down, but the fact is that most people who have horses do know and do nothing to stop it. Most owners that raise or compete in the horse world don't want to admit it, but they know the kill market puts a base price on their commodity which makes their horses more valuable (or so they think). They convince themselves that their horses are of a higher quality and therefore they won't be at risk of going to slaughter. As Tawnee has pointed out, this is not reality. Horses that sold for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars when young or in their prime might not be at risk at the time that they sell them, but the second they are no longer in their prime, injured or sick they are at a very high risk of ending up in the slaughter pipeline. Many believe that if they sell their horse to someone who is wealthy, someone who can afford to take wonderful care of their horses for their entire life will do exactly that, but in my experience those are the people who are more likely to "cut their losses" the second the animal is not earning its keep. There are so many reasons horses unintentionally end up in the slaughter pipeline. As with any animal, the cost of care often goes up when they get older, so the owner might sell because they can't afford to take proper care of them. Often I hear that the person can only afford one horse, so if they keep their older horse that can't ride or do the things their person wants, they can't afford to add another horse that they can ride. I'm in a position right now where my older horse would be perfect for a beginner rider to learn on and it would be good for her health to exercise more than I can right now, but I won't ever sell her for fear that she would end up being discarded later. I am considering a lease with a local family where I can monitor that she's being properly cared for, she'll get the exercise she needs, even more attention and a new rider can learn on a well trained, solid horse. I get peace of mind knowing she was born into my arms and I will hopefully be there when she leaves knowing she never suffered unnecessarily a single day of her life. One other point- Many states do have laws on the books regarding hauling horses more "humanely". Some can't be hauled in a double decker livestock trailer or if they're blind or seriously lame etc. It varies from state to state and although it is not a solution, if enforced it can stop the suffering for some of the horses, but law enforcement is often never informed of these laws. The kill buyers know where these laws are enforced and where they're not, so people need to know the laws and report cases of those not adhering to the law, but be prepared to show the officers the law if they are not informed. You won't make any friends doing it, but you could save a horse from suffering through that ride. Mostly, if they know the laws will be enforced they won't buy those horses anymore. When these auctions are closed or prevented from consigning seriously debilitated horses the consequence is that many will suffer terrible neglect for years, out of sight while in their homes, so there is still work to be done on that front. Maybe if people know they'll be held accountable for the condition of their horses they'll make budgeting for euthanasia more of a priority? Make sure your animals are included in your will and that friends/family know. My pets have their God parents LOL. Tawnee is absolutely correct about donating to your local rescues and shelters. My mom was the founder of our local animal rescue and when the huge organizations really started pouring millions of dollars into marketing themselves, our local rescue lost a huge chunk of their normal donations. Your local shelters are where the biggest percentage of your donation will go directly to the care of the animals compared to the larger organizations. If you're in marketing/advertising many non profits could really benefit from your advice or donation of time. The animal needs take priority, but the marketing brings in the donations that allow them to save more animals, so they go hand in hand especially today with social media. Don't forget your wildlife rescue/rehabs! They're at the very bottom of the donation list and most are solely funded by the rehabber themselves. Few states, if any, fund their rehabbers at all and some even charge them. People tend to think they work for the DNR, but they just set the rules and do inspections. Donors often only want certain animals saved and consider others unworthy, but that's not how it works. There is also a shortage of release sites for those animals that are ready to return to the wild. Many people want the animal rescued, but not returned to their property which is where the animal has the best chance of success. I've been involved in all kinds of animal rescue since childhood--a very long, long time.

When Tawnee was talking about 2 horses who were stolen in California and shipped to Canada she was talking about an auction in Madera, CA. Been there many times and that's how they roll. Don't go anymore and wouldn't advise anyone to go there.

Back in the 1950s, horsemeat was sold in every supermarket & tiny store. I can remember my Mom buying it but I don't remember eating it. I don't condone horse slaughter for food even if it were humanely done.
