[4K] Shirakawa-go: Night at Gassho Zukuri House | Charm of Japanese Countryside
In this video, we'll take you inside the Gassho Zhukuri House (that infamous triangular house in Shirakawa go, a small traditional town in Takayama Japan). In Shirakawa, you can stay at the hotel with onsen or seek other accommodation options, but we were so curious about the traditional Gassho-style house so we rented it out! Gassho Zukuri in Shirakawa-go allows you to see and experience 300 years of the history of this Shirakawa village. We will also take you to the Shirakawa Folk Village, an open-air museum in Shirakawa where you won't see many tourists. The village features Gassho houses that are open to visit.
Gassho-style houses were built in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama from around 1800 until the early 1900s.

@@Saadaziz9 omg thank you! I'm so glad you found it helpful ☺️ good luck climbing!
We put in a request for one month ahead but many places are booked. It's been about one week and we have not heard back from the support team. Is anyone experiencing something similar?
Hi I am thinking to visit in early Dec, any snow at all?
@FT-od4xv You can't really predict the weather, BUT This video was recorded exactly in December 2023. We were also visiting a small town nearby (but deeper in the mountains), and we did catch some snow there.
@FT-od4xv This town is a gem regardless!! I am glad you are considering going there! It is one of the best places in Japan we've visited (in our opinion)!
What bus should I take for subashiri trail entrance? From tokyo
Hey! You'll first need to go to Gotemba Station. Buses operate between Gotemba Station and the Subashiri 5th Station every 1-2 hours during the climbing season. Here is the timetable: www.japan-guide.com/bus/fuji_season.html How to get from Tokyo to Gotemba Take the JR Tokaido Line from Tokyo to Kozu (75 minutes, frequent departures) and change to the JR Gotemba Line to Gotemba (50 minutes, 1-2 trains per hour). The entire journey costs 1980 yen. Alternatively, take the Odakyu Railway from Shinjuku to Shin-Matsuda Station (80 minutes, 800 yen by express train, frequent departures), walk to JR Matsuda Station and take the JR Gotemba Line to Gotemba (30 minutes, 510 yen, 1-2 trains per hour). Additionally, there are a few "Mount Fuji" limited express trains, which operate directly between Shinjuku and Gotemba Station. The one way trip takes about 100 minutes and costs around 3000 yen.
@@LetsMeetJapan wow this is so helpful. thank you so much!
@@zyagko you are so very welcome ❤️ have fun!!
All the huts seem to be full for August, do you think they still have some place left for non-reservations anywhere?
Unfortunately, I do not think so. My advice is to find a tour guide and go with a group. They usually have huts booked, so I believe this is gonna be the only option for you at this moment 😢
Thank you so much for the detailed video. It was super helpful. Is it possible to start hiking early in the morning (8:00 AM) and return the same day? I am planning to do fujinomia trail .
I am so happy you found it helpful! ❤️ I unfortunately can not tell if it's possible - it really depends on so many factors, for example, how well and quick your body adjusts to the altitude change. Id not do that myself honestly 😅 I do believe it's possible in theory, but please be careful and take care of yourself 😊
Excellent video. I feel I have a chance to make it to the top in August 2024 after seeing this.
I am so excited for you!! Have fun❤️
@@LetsMeetJapan thanks!
Great video! Thanks!
Thank you so much!❤️
did you get to check out the starry night? was it as beautiful as the pictures?
Unfortunately, we did not! We got so lucky with the weather during the daytime, but nights were stormy! Saved that for the next time 🥹❤️
Thanks for the informative video! I would just like to ask about the transportation back to Tokyo. Do you have to book a bus ticket in advance? Thank you very much.
I would advise you to do it! Here is the link to the corresponding page on their official website. Scroll down a little bit and you will see dropdown list with the names of the trails. Simply select the trail you are planning on hiking and you will see the details on the busses ( and links to buy tickets). Hope that helps!

Do you have cell service everywhere on the mountain ? May go with other family members not going so would be great if could send updates etc while on hike
Depends on you provider! I have a japanese carrier (very affordable) and my coverage was terrible. But I was able to connect and send messages:) even sent some pictures from the top🥹
Thank you for the info, I had one question I'm hoping you can answer as it's not clear to me. I am planning on hiking in one day as that's all I have time for, my partner isn't good at early mornings but we will try to get there as early as possible. My question is, when the gates close at 4pm are people coming down, off the hike still able to pass through to get out. Basically if I start at 7am and finish at 6pm will I be able to leave the mountainside
Yes, you will be able to leave. It only closed closed from entering after 4pm to prevent massive overnight climbing.
Hello! I am planning to hike Mt. Fuji 1-2 weeks after climbing season ends. Will the stores/cottages be closed during this time? If so, is it still possible to collect all the stamps during the off-season?
The huts will be closed and unfortunately you won't be able to get the stamps. I climbed a few weeks ago, only the 5th station was open.
Yes, you got a very good answer here. Everything will be closed down and you won't be able to stamp your pole. I climbed literally the last weekend before the season was over. A lot of huts and stations were already shut down and a lot of them were cleaning up & and getting ready to go back down( you just could tell that they won't return back soon).
Thank you so much for the video Could you help me howto make reservations I’m appreciate it
Takayama and near towns are way more beautiful than Kyoto to me
yesss - THIS! Sam still says that one day we will move to Takayama (area) for good 😄
10:46 wow, where was that located? Looks incredible!
thank youuuuu! yes, it is a special place that left me speechless honestly! We found this little hidden gem when we were wandering around the area. Put "Pikyazu ピキャズ" in your Google Maps search bar and that will take you to the right spot!
Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸🇺🇸Beautiful sceneries. Nice video🌷🌸
appreciate you🥰
When did you visit Takayama?
That was in December 2023. We posted right after our visit 🤍
Gracias!
You are most welcome 😊
Hi do you suggest hiking mt. Fuji with a guide? Or we can do it ourselves ?
Hey! Thank you for watching ❤️ I would not advise hiring the guide unless you cannot book an accommodation yourself. The season is short and lodges are sold out really fast and most of them are booked by guides. If you get to book the lodge yourself, there is absolutely no need to hire a guide - the trails are well maintained, and navigation is everywhere along the trails.
@@LetsMeetJapan thanks a lot. Would you suggest the top 2-3 mountain huts as per your understanding.
@@iranibasu8869 so sorry - this comment just never appeared as unread in my inbox. I cannot suggest the best one, as per my understanding they are all sort of the same 😅 I'd say just grab anything that is still available😉
Thank you so much, the website is so awesome. May I know if you have experience leeches and how do you overcome this? (I’m extremely fear of leeches😢)
Ugh, leeches. Definitely not the most dangerous thing you can meet on a trail in Japan, but, I get it, they are not pleasant at all 😅🤢 I honestly didn't experience them in Kumano (and didn't even see them on the trails). We used anti insects repellent at all times (check that the list includes leeches as well). Also, I never go hiking without my thick, long socks. Mine are not necessarily anti leech, but I did see those leech protective socks on Amazon as well. Check it out! Also, there are hiking leg gaiters that you can use: they are covering your legs from the knee area down, most importantly protecting anything to get into your boots. Hope that helps! And good luck exploring the area- it is so worth it 🥰
@@LetsMeetJapan thank you so much on helping me understand and your words soothes me as you didn’t experience leeches.
I'm sorry! I tried googling but nothing relevant came up, but what is the meat used in the curry rice? Is it a beef patty and pork sausages? I'm planning to summit this July and want to plan me meals for it as I don't eat beef.
Yes, you guessed correctly - beef and pork. Vegetarian friends were carrying food with them as lodge didn't offer Vegetarian options unfortunately 😫 stay safe and have fun there! Good luck ❤️

Hiiii! I just found your channel, and I am watching your videos about Mt. Fuji. As you can imagine, I am travelling to Japan this September, and one of the things I want to do is also climbing mount Fuji. However, I am really scared because the booking for the accommodation will open soon and last time I saw it (year 2023), they were sold out in few minutes. Any tips of how to handle and being able to book one place in the 8th station? Thanks
Thank you so much for watching ❤️ That is true, it is extremely hard to get lodging. My advice to you would be (if you don't get to book by your own), hire a tour guide . They usually sell package for very reasonable price (basically price of the lodge + maybe 20%). They provide you with everything, you just basically will need to show up on time and thats it. They are the reason why it is so hard to book individually - those tour guides buy A LOT to accommodate their clients.
@LetsMeetJapan Thanks for your response. Have you got any suggestions on guides at reasonable prices, please? I did a quick search and only found guide tours at 300+ euros or more, and that is not reasonable at all. Regards ^_^
The no trash bins is also very popular in California. We say Pack it in, Pack it out means that whatever you bring outside with you, you bring it back with you when you leave. It’s a good concept to keep in mind when hiking most places.
I love that! It must be normalized everywhere (mountains or cities!). Thank you for watching and commenting! Appreciate your time ☺️
I was there last October.i chose Miyakojima completely randomly, and it was a very lovely surprise❤.But I didn't see any turtle, unfortunately 😢
Hello :) How was the weather during October please ?
@@Thebirdyy12998 We stayed 4 days and we had a bit of rain one day in the afternoon, but the temperature that day was 26/27 degrees celsius. I was there for Halloween they had a little halloween festival fair (particular because it was hot ...the pumpkins were made of cardboard 😆). I think if you go in early October the weather is better. I arrive there on the 26th of October and I stayed until the 29th and then I moved to Naha.

Hi At 28:43 the location where you stood, how much walking I have to do from the nearest parking spot? Thank you. Really therapeutic this video :)
Hey! Thank you a lot for watching 🥹 Nachi Falls are super accessible! You can get up there by car and park super close to the falls! I believe this one would be the closest parking lot: maps.app.goo.gl/f6qtEjMiWYQe2Kcv5 Google Maps won't show you how much longer you need to walk from there to the destination, but it is VERY close! Because this is perhaps the most accessible part of Kumano, it will be packed with tourists. Not to discourage you, just to warn. The falls are truly magnificent, and it is worth visiting for sure. If you can, hike around as much as possible. This way, your journey will be more tranquil ❤️🙏
7:25 where is this in MIyako island?
Hey there! Thank you for watching ❤️ this is the most beautiful beach in Miyako (in our humble opinion 🥹) - Sunayama beach. Here is the Google maps pin for you: maps.app.goo.gl/5iYDJq6PxQK3bcAp6
what beaches are shown during the 'See the most beautiful beaches in Japan' section? :)
Heyy! Sorry - that was our very first video, and we didn't realize back then the importance of putting names 😉 here are the names of the beaches from the video: 06:04 - Sunayama Beach (by far the most beautiful one!) 6:44 - Shigira Beach (abundance of the marine life) 6:53 - Sunayama again (this little secluded sandy part can be accessed by water only from Sunayama Beach. You don't even need to swim - just walk around the cliff that is on the left side of the beach👌) 6:59 - Shigira Beach again. 7:06 - This one is Irabu Island. Put "17End" into your Google maps search bar, and you will be able to get there. Fun spot where you can observe the planes landing on the island 🏝) 7:18 - Yonaha Beach. It's probably the best one for swimming as there are no corals. Enjoy your trip to Miyako ❤️
What footwear do you recommend for the Nakahechi trail? I was consider doing it in leather sneakers (with some grip) as I've generally had no issues hiking in them, but does the trail require something a bit more substantial?
Good question! As a hiking nerd who is always concerned about the safety, I would say you need hiking boots. My husband takes it much easier, and he was actually hiking in sneakers, and he was perfectly fine. 🙂 The trails are generally not hard to hike, however, please note that you will most likely be hiking under the rain or after the rain (it's raining a lot there!) and the trails get wet and slippery. Stay safe and good luck!
The retro place focuses on the Showa era, 1926-1989, so its collection goes further back than forty years ago! 😊
Wow, that is beautiful, thank you for sharing! We just did a very brief research before going (we wanted to keep most of it unknown for us and just uncover the collection as we go).
Even as time goes by and the surface of a town changes, nothing changes in the underlying foundation of the unique Japanese culture. The common root of the creation of originality in Japanese culture is the uniqueness of its geopolitical location and the influence of its natural environment. Even if they import culture and knowledge from abroad, they are not dominated by it, and after a certain period of time, they select the content, integrate it with their own culture, improve it, and eventually create a new style because of the influence of their unique natural environment. Japan's original country name "NIPPON”(Japan) means "the land under the sun" , but another name is "YAMATO(WA)” , meaning “Peacefully Harmony among People and Nature”. So Japan's name means “the Land under the Sun” and” the Land of "Great Harmony of People and Nature,” The history of Japan is very old, about 2,000 years since the Emperor's reign, but humans began to live in villages and communities in this island nation about 14,000 years ago, during “the JOMON pottery” culture. (That's 30,000 years ago, if you count the Neolithic period.) Surrounded on all sides by the sea and geographically isolated from the Eurasian continent in the Pacific Ocean, this island nation has a warm and humid climate, and because it is a volcanic island, it is blessed with abundant underground clear water resources, diverse vegetation, and fishery resources. For this reason, people have lived here for tens of thousands of years, enjoying the abundant nature and living in peace with nature. Since ancient times, the people of this land have respected human harmony and have lived in peace by working together as a group. However, while the natural environment of this island nation is rich, it is also harsh and has both light and dark sides. They have shared and enjoyed the blessings of nature by pooling their wisdom and collectively overcoming numerous severe and harsh natural disasters, such as frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami, summer typhoons, and heavy snowfall in winter. This is because this island nation has a harsh natural environment that cannot be overcome by a single person. Individual power is too weak to face the onslaught of nature, which can destroy the wealth we have built overnight. Therefore, many people should suppress their egos, dislike confrontation, and work together to create a livable environment and maintain cleanliness, and then work together to prevent disasters before they occur and to restore the environment after they have occurred. This is the most wise, efficient, and rational way to maintain peace and harmony in each other's lives, rather than to create more chaos by insisting on each other's selfishness. And this thinkings have given rise to Japan's unique teachings, culture, and behavior. The ancient name of Japan, "YAMATO" or "WA" (peaceful harmony between people and nature), represents the wishes and reality of the people who have been trying to survive in the rich and harsh natural environment unique to island countries, which is different from the dry and stable land of the Eurasian continent. And it is in this ancient Japanese country name "WA YAMATO" that the essence of Japanese culture, the origin and secret of its unique culture, which is very different from the cultures of other Asian countries on the continent, is hidden.
Thank you for sharing this with us 🤗
Hi guys, great review of this beautiful Island, keep on the great work! Cheers from Italy 😊
Thank you so very much! Appreciate your comment and hope you are planning to visit Japan sometime soon😊
need help, i plan to do the Fujinomiya trail in a day n giving myself 10hrs up/down n wld like to start early like kick off 5am but i don't see any transportation from Fujinomiya Stations that leaves early, the earliest is 6.30
Hey there! Unfortunately, it does look like there are no earlier transportation options. I will give you some options that you might want to consider: (1) take the first shuttle (6AM) and start your ascend right away, at about 6.40AM. It looks like it will take AT LEAST 5 hours for you to get to the top. Even if it will take 7 hours, it looks like you probably will have enough time to go up and down before the last bus. If you are late for the last bus, there MIGHT be taxi available that can take you down to the nearest town. To me, this sounds like a very stressful adventure, but we are all different - if you are looking for a quick run, maybe this is for you (2) do what most of the bullet climbers do: start your hike at night. I believe, if you take the very last bus (8PM), you will reach the 5th station at about 8:40PM. You will have some time to adjust to the altitude, stretch, maybe even have a small snack. Start your hike at around midnight so you reach the top for the sunrise. This is honestly the absolute best moment of the climb: the sunrise and walk around the crater. If you have a chance - please do it! Its by far the best views in my life (3) maybe consider staying overnight? not gonna push this option, obviously you know better. I am just strongly advocating for the safest possible approach (this is what Japan does to you haha!) hope that helps! Good luck with you climb!
@@LetsMeetJapan hay appreciate the feedback. my wife will be hiking w me n option 2 at night might b too cold for her plus u don't get to see anything. seeing sunrise is not a priority for me n staying overnight is an option but as we are on a tight budget we are going to bight the bullet n trying our best to do it in a day. according to the literature it says 5 up n 3 dwn, so m giving myself 10hrs 7up 3 dwn, its the wife who is the slow one lol
Actually going downhill might be even tougher than ascending 😅
@krisietongable and that is precisely why I have ZERO footage from the way down 😂 It was still much quicker to get back down, but THE PAIN WAS REAL!

My wife and I have tattoos, do you know a website that list Onsens that allows tattoos?
Hey there! Thanks for your question. Even though there might be a list like that, it most likely will only feature very touristy places (big, expensive, crowded). I'd advise you to look for the following tips when it comes to onsen: - private onsen (onsen inside of your room that only you can access). It is usually quite pricey but provides an incredible traditional experience. - public onsen that can be booked for private use (one of our last videos about that kind of onsen. Any of those who stay at the ryokan can book that onsen for private use. Since you two are gonna be alone there, tattoos are not an issue. Lots of traditional family-run ryuokans have this service. When you find an onsen that you like, just check the website for those details. This is how we always get great onsen with amazing views and no people bathing with us. Oh, and lastly, if the tattoos are not too big, you can cover them (check on Amazon Japan, there are light-color masking tape). My tattoo is too big to be covered, but maybe that will work for you🙌
@@LetsMeetJapan thanks for the info, we are looking forward to see more videos from you guys. Can't wait to visit Japan 😊
We really appreciate your kind words and support! We'll do our best to bring you more exciting content about Japan. Have LOTS OF FUN in Japan!
Exactly why I want to move to Japan one day. I love exploring, walking and Japan full of beautiful places. These trails are like walking into a magical world, peaceful, one with nature. I'm learning Japanese slowly, going to take courses next year. We want to do a month long trip within 10 years and see if it would be possible to buy a house near Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe. Thanks for sharing and showing us a side we don't often see in other UA-camrs videos.
thank you for sharing this beautiful plan of yours! We wish you luck! Keep up with your Japanese lessons, and who knows, maybe we will be neighbors one day :)
Nice video. Is strawberry cake included in the stay package?
Hey! Thank you so much for watching ❤️ we did have a little mix berries pudding as a part of the set. The cake we ordered separately. Normally , in places like that, they offer lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables, implementing them into the dining experience. We got to taste strawberry, but you may see something else ❤️
Thanks for the great video. Very helpful. I plan to hike Fuji this September.
Thank you for watching ❤️ I'm glad it was helpful ! Please make sure to check the schedule carefully to ensure that the trails are open😉 have a great hiking experience! Views are 💯 worth seeing!
thanks for you beautiful video. Can i know what is the colorful remark on the last column in breakdown table e.g. P.7; P.8-9?
I do want to say that P stands for Part or maybe Point (?) but I dont know for sure. Basically, those P1, P2-P3 etc correspond to different parts of the main trail. They also are color-coded, so you can see what each section can offer in terms of distance, time to walk that specific part, elevation gain & loss. They have variety of maps on their website and those P1-P2-etc-codes are pretty useful when you try to match information from different maps :)
Thank you for the beautiful vlog and for providing the link to book Gassho Zukuri House. We plan to stay in one of them in March. We are Vegan (Plant-based). Do you feel they can accommodate our request for dinner? They have given phone number but unfortunately, we don't speak Japanese, hence...asking you. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for your comment and for watching our vlog - we greatly appreciate you 😊 When it comes to those smaller, family owned businesses, it might be hard to communicate without knowing Japanese, we agree. The best advice here would be to try contacting them by email, this will allow them to use translation tools hence your chance to get in touch with them regarding your inquiry is higher. Try googling as well as visiting their official website, I am sure you can find the email address! Good luck with your travels and hope you have a wonderful time here in Japan 🙌❤️
We did this 4 months ago, loved it! Especially swimming in the river after a long hiking day. Our favourite night was in Minshuku Momofuku house in Koguchi Also really enjoyed the night in Yunomine Onsen at J-hoppers.
One of the most beautiful (and, most underrated) places in japan! Glad you too had a wonderful experience ❤️
I will go there in few days , no snow .. ? 😂😂
Looks like it's snowing now (and, if we believe the weather forecast, it will be snowing more this next week!)!But, yeah, overall, I feel like this year there is not too much snow. We are in hokkaido now, and there are also not too snowy🥹
Hi, watched at your video I thought that this ryokan's good. Where can I book the room?
Hey there! Thank you so much for watching! This is their website. You can check it out: honomitei.com/sp/#price It doesn't look like you can book online there, but it has phone & email listed, so you can get in touch. We called and booked over the phone. We didn't do any pre-payment. Don't worry about that. If they confirm your reservation via email or phone, you good to go! This is a very "traditional" small Japanese family business, so they don't have an advanced booking system. But it is so worth it - absolutely wonderful place and we would so go there again!
I also found this property on tripadvisor - have a look. I'm not sure about the price 🤔, might be more expensive if you use the websites other than the original: www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g298113-d1089271-Reviews-Pension_Honomitei-Takayama_Gifu_Prefecture_Tokai_Chubu.html Anyway, I am hoping you will have an absolutely amazing trip to Japan! 🧡
Okayyy, thank you for the nice sharing!
