    Used Apple ecosystem for 5 years and moved back to Microsoft + Samsung: 1) Microsoft 365 applications don’t work as well on a Mac as they do on Windows. 2) A Mac is not safer than Windows; it’s just less targeted. 3) Apple products are overpriced. 4) The Samsung ecosystem has “copied” and improved some Apple features. My earbuds work flawlessly between my devices. 4) New Macs are more limited with their ARM architecture, and I need to run my Windows VMs. 5) No touchscreen? 6) Can’t run MS Project or MS Visio. What I like about Apple: 1) Apple has the best customer support ever! They are years ahead of the competition. 2) Products are well-built and designed. I totally agree with you on this. 3) Mac laptop batteries last much longer. (I’m using a Samsung 12.4" tablet with an integrated keyboard on the go). I moved away from PC laptops. My laptop is a gaming laptop-heavy. I keep it at my desk.

    I also recently switched to Mac, mainly to learn some new stuff and ways of doing, and I love it! Have had an iPhone for the last 6 or 7 years and the integration is mind-blowing. Still need a Windows laptop for work, so roughly a 50/50 split, but the Mac has increasingly become my daily driver. PS: Loved the DX reference! 😆

    Great video. For context I am an End User Compute engineer (ConfigMgr and Intune), deploying and maintaining a fleet of Windows laptops and over 50 apps. Used Windows since 3.1. I use my Apple gear whenever I can because of dozens of little quality of life things that all add up. (1) Agree. Hardware is fantastic. Built quality, performance, battery life, all epic. MacOS is fantastic - it's more robust, it has way less annoyances, the update mechanism is simple and robust. You almost never have to reboot. Standby/resume 'just works' incredibly well. App deployments never require a reboot to complete. Windows ARM runs faster on a macOS VM than I've seen natively on a Windows laptop (I have not used X-Elite yet admittedly) on a fanless computer. (2) Built in apps - meh. I use some and not others. They are generally robust, easy to use, generally better than the built-in apps in Windows or linux. Reminders, Notes and Freeform are very good, especially how they seamlessly sync to iPad instantaneously. (3) Security - double edged sword. You don't really _need_ 3rd party AV, but if you want it, I've found many offerings to be troublesome. Used to use Sophos and had to get rid of it, created too many issues. Been a bit scared to put Defender on macOS, but I guess I will try it. (4) Agree. The ecosystem integrations are INCREDIBLE. Windows users usually just don't get this. If you haven't lived with it, you just don't know. You can copy text on Macbook (cmd-C) and paste it on iPad, without setting anything up. The way Airpods seamlessly connect/roam to iPad/macbook/AppleTV automatically is just witchcraft. Connect to Wifi on your iPad, and your iPhone, macbook, watch all just connect by magic. You can use your iPhone as a webcam with a macbook, iPad, or even Apple TV. My wife just decided to work at the dining table, and she just threw the laptop audio to the homepod speakers in there. No bluetooth pairing, no cables, just works. (5) Agree, and then some. Look and feel of whole OS is uniform and consistent. Even 3rd party apps actually. Dark Mode actually works EVERYWHERE all the time - still broken in Windows. MacOS genuinely stays out of your way. I do tech support for my wife. It took her 2 or 3 weeks to transition from lifelong Windows user to Mac, but now she'd never go back - so it's not just about familiarity. I now do way less tech support for her than I used to, I'd say less than 10%. She's updated her macbook from macOS 14 to 15 and iOS devices from 15 to 16 this week, once I gave the OK. I had no concerns, she had no questions, everything went fine and everything just works. I would never have let her update from Windows 10 to 11 without me being there. I'd add the way applications install in macOS is a major win. It's much more simple. They are almost like containers, self contained in their own folder, you pretty much never have dependencies or issues with shared libraries, or mandatory reboots. You can't install the same app as SYSTEM and USER contexts in the way Windows does. Generally, it's easy to uninstall apps by just deleting them. If you're techy, there is homebrew. Think winget, except brew is not hot garbage - it actually works. Other wins: TimeMachine is just ridiculously good. Spotlight search actually works properly. Standby resume is almost instant. There are downsides. The MS apps for macOS are not of the best quality. macOS is less customisable than Windows in many ways. Text rendering on 3rd party displays is not as good as Windows (epic on Apple screens, mind you). Mouse support is not great without 3rd party utilities, you can't control acceleration or pointer tracking in the same way. Easy fix is Magic Trackpad, but that's $$$. Speaking of expensive, yeah, the hardware. You have to use their gear, and a lot of it is overpriced. The base models are kind of reasonably priced for what you get, but I can't live with 8GB/256GB. Upgrading to sensible specs is, well, ludicrous money. To upgrade the Air to 16GB/1TB, my absolute minimum, costs £600 extra. Madness. There's no competition to drive prices down. Hopefully the base specs will be less stingy with the upcoming M4 devices.

    I recently switched to all Linux at home (while Windows as work). The switch has given me lots of insights to the bad that Windows has, but also the good. I think the worst part of windows is how bloated it has gotten and how difficult it can be to opt out of the Microsoft overlords. But the good of windows is how feature rich it is and how everything just works. Mac's have always been nice to work with if you stay in the ecosystem, but if you try to step outside or run into even the simplest bump in the UI, you end up going down the rabbit hold and it goes from beginner to expert level required real fast.

    • @paulwoodward8265
      @paulwoodward8265 11 днів тому

      Yeah, I ran desktop linux for 10 years. Loved it, but stuff would break fairly regularly. Lots of changes all the time. Eventually realised I spent about 1 day a week fettling my OS to get something to look prettier or work better, or coax an unsupported Windows app to run under Wine. Or fix sound, again. If it's a fun hobby for you, then great, but if you've got a busy day job, it's likely not the OS for you. When I pivoted to macOS I was hugely frustrated by defaults that I couldn't change, and I fought it hard for a few weeks. Eventually you realise it's not worth fighting macOS, just use it the way Apple intend it to be used, and actually it's OK. You get a lot of headspace back when you stop worrying about it and go with the flow. With linux you can always tweak it, whatever it is. With macOS, more often than not you can't, or at least shouldn't. Only real exception to that rule for me is running BetterMouse, to make my Logitech MX Master 3 work how I want. The default mouse behaviour in macOS is disgusting.

    I'm a hardcore Windows and Android user and an IT pro working with Intune and MS365. Always stood up for it and made fun of people using iOS. Recently my enterprise gave me an iPhone and a macbook pro for Intune integration test purpose, I bought myself an iWatch and an Apple TV. Never tought it would work as a full ecosystem so seamlessly. It's just amazing. And the battery lifetime of the macbook is fantastic. Now... I didn't pay for the most expensive devices, and I don't think I would, sould my company take it back. The synergy kinda reminds me of MS365 universe. I'm trying to find the right balance of a thought provoking thumbnail that attracts viewers to content that they appreciate and find useful. So far the good comments outweigh the bad. It's a constant work in progress though.

    Great I stumbled on your channel by accident. Got captured by the title, so glad I stayed. Very articulate way of answering the questions I get all the time. Specifically the single point of failure argument. "It's better than having multiple points of cascading failure" Thanks Peter look forward to watching more

      Thank you so much for the kind words Paul. One or two viewers called me out on the thumbnail being too clickbaity - which it is a bit I guess, but I wanted it to be thought provoking and useful and I’m glad you found it so. 😀

    I am of the opinion that Microsoft seem to make the simple things extraordinarily complicated. I really think they could do better. For example, Windows Updates, there are several ways to implement it, dozens and dozens of options, deprecated WU options in Group Policy that can break things. Still really hard to make it do what you want it to do. Or take Defender for Endpoint, I can configure scheduled scan settings in several different places in Intune and MDE, and then have these clash with Security Baselines (yet another place to set them). Or deploying Windows apps. Intune allows me to install apps of the following types: MS Store App (new), MS Store App (legacy), M365 Apps, Web Application, Web link, Line-of-business app, Windows app (win32). Win32 Apps (99% of which are 64-bit) still require me to use a Windows CLI binary to create IntuneWin packages to upload. I can't just upload a folder or a Zip file. It's mad. The utility to create intunewin packages can't be found from the intune admin center, you get it from a random github page. Chocolatey makes installing Windows apps from CLI a breeze. Winget still can't deliver what choco could do 5 years ago, and is insanely complex and cumbersome to use by comparison. I'm still not using it in Prod because it's unstable and unreliable. There are several commercial and community projects to fix this mess, ZeroTouch AI, RoboPack, PatchMyPC, IntuneAppFactory to name a few. When you see what RoboPack can do, and the slick UI, you see what Intune could and should have been. Look at Entra Private Access. Looks great, we want it. Missing features in Public Beta that were in Private Beta, we had wait months for it to become available in preview, then buy licenses to test it even before it went GA. Still missing features. The endpoint client doesn't install cleanly. There is no built in way to deploy it in Intune - you have to roll your own package. It all feels a bit rushed, a bit Mickey Mouse, yet it's a premium product from one of the biggest companies in the world. I can drive Intune and get this stuff done, but it's really because I've got deep knowledge, it's not simple. And much of it should be. Once I step outside my area of expertise Endpoint Management into other areas such as Azure/Purview the learning curve is steep, and confusion is deep. There are normally deprecated and new products available at the same time, products get rebranded at the drop of a hat, it's really hard to know what licenses you need or what it'll cost. Defender for this, defender for that, what do they all do? This is why I really really appreciate what you do!! Some of the criticism is warranted.

    I have major issues with the amount of telemetry Microsoft demands. Basically trading privacy for ease of use. I made a hard switch to Linux the exact moment I learned about Microsoft recall (data security nightmare as a service... yea no thanks).

    As a full time Linux user who also manages our businesse's O365 infrastructure for Windows, Mac and Linux Users and services, I have a love/hate relationship with O365... I do rely on Microsoft for the SSO and identity part of the solutions we use... But man is it an issue for SMBs to follow what Microsoft is doing! One day something is here, the next week it changed name and logo and you need to make 23 clicks to get there.... And the you get the "new experience" but wait, it is half baked, so you need to jump between the "classic" and "new" experinces to get stuff done... And then no! You now need to use Azure Powershell to do something that should be trivial. And since we are a small business, we have a small business plan (which changed name 3 times in the last 4 years). Features come and go as Microsoft decides your plan does not exist anymore, multiple times... "Ok, get an enterprise plan then"... "oh no, you can't, you are too small"... "Wait, we have another plan, this one costs 6 times more and has almost all the features you need... But not quite!" And don't get me started on the graph API... What a piece of crap! So yeah, they do have good things, but they are really hard for small and medium businesses.
