John Fiore Announcement at King of the Hammers
Sylas took his sprint car to pikes peak a couple years ago. Pretty cool
Thanks man. The car he drove was not actually a sprint car, it’s a sprint car’s bigger and heavier brother, a next generation “silver crown” or “champ car” car that was run wingless on pavement super speedways in the early 2000s for 3 years, mostly as a support series for Indy car. My best friend was on the tour for 2 of the 3 years. For comparison, his car is 2500lbs while mine is about 1900lbs. I like his car and what he and Roger Johnson accomplished but it’s not a sprint car (even though he proclaimed it was lol). My car’s chassis ran with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in 2017. I know some will try to argue that but midgets and silver crown cars are not sprint cars.
Looks a little soft on spring/bars. But other than that looks great. Seat time is a key factor.
@@racenriggs98 I agree, we started with 1025s all the way around, I’m thinking about 1050s in the front
I'm glad your not with Celia Hodes anymore 😅😅 TV Show reference.
I’m not sure I know that one lol
Your gonna wish it had a blower or turbo when you get to the mountain.
Good call, that’s the plan, we will have twins on for Pikes!!! We start at 9000ft and go to 14115ft, definitely need a turbo, blowers are rpm limited but a turbo never stops spooling. I had a great conversation with a couple engineers from the Sendy club about that same subject.
Still slipping? I wish ya could just leter eat... I don't know, is trans input shaft off ; too long or not supported by pilot brg.??
I’m at a loss right now boss, I’m gonna call Quarter Master today.
Awesome. Why not run an automatic transmission? I figured the technology is there? I know it would be a complete start over deal but looks like there would be a lot less trouble. Keep digging buddy
I would love to go that route but there isn’t an auto trans that is small enough and able to support 500+ hp, I plan to get a TTi sequential 4 or 5 speed but it’s $10k.
Do you plan on using any wings on the car?
That is the eventual plan, I want to concentrate on the car without aero first and figure out what kind of modifications an oval car wing needs besides the obvious.
Yah! Gerryowen....
🫡
I'd like to see these sprint cars at the Euro and Brit hillclimbs. Think they would get a kick out of it.
@@genxunclekey I would absolutely love that!!!!
Dude , stand on the gas! Dont lift, drive that bitch!!! WRC bro
Oh cool ive driven that road many times. Also love the sprint(?)
Thank you! I think I should drive it a few hundred more times lol.
Boy o boy, John, that is smoked, I think you'll have a good day.
@@davidaarons2488 growing pains lol
How did you clean out the middle of the pipes right where they meet the collectors ?
I soaked that area really well from all sides, you can use a nylon brush for the details, just get all you can see with the header off. There is a lot of discoloration from the welding in that area and the paint will adhere better there since I think they’re painted while they’re still hot.
PROPS Man taking a left hander both ways!!!!!
Thank you! There isn’t much left of a traditional car so that it would turn both ways lol
Great job! It was so nice meeting you and your family.
Thanks and great meeting you also!!!
Glad ya got there and drove to the top, next time you will more prepared because ya know how the event goes. 2 more marks and yer golden. Curious, have ya considered running a wing?
Thanks man, we definitely will be better prepared after learning a lot from this. We will definitely be running wings eventually (especially for Pikes) but they’ll have to be custom a probably very expensive. I’m not worrying about aero right now though, there is a lot to sort out and I have to learn how to drive both the car and hillclimbs. Like you said, two more marks!
Ive always wanted to build a Pikes Peak Car as a (kid but believe it or not ) when they forced paved it i lost a little interest .Being a huge fan of Jim Hall’s Chaparral’s i wanted to have a adjustable WING…! Now seeing you have run this midget gives me some hope again like old SMOKEY THE Ford Pickup…! So I think the FACTORY FIVE CARS would be interesting..LIGHTWEIGHT, BUILD IT YOURSELF, ADD A WING for a little downforce, ‘’CHEVROLET POWER ‘’ BIG T.B.M. BRAKES and dad your on TOP..!!! …. GOOD LUCK TO YOU IN THE FUTURE …!
@@Hotrodclassic Its a SPRINT CAR they have 8 PISTONS LOL
@@HotRodMonza1776 WHAT DOES THAT MEAN..? KYLE LARSON DRIVES SPRINT CARS AND YES THEY ARE POWERFUL WEDGE V8’S .. ?? 🤷🏻♂️ HE ALSO DRIVES MIDGETS THAT ARE NOT V-8’S ..? SO ? ? 🤷🏻♂️🤔🏁
@@Hotrodclassic You called this car a MIDGET so it is a SPRINT CAR NOT A MIDGET and to be TRUTHFUL its not a WEDGE V8 the heads have moved past that for like 30 years
A shame your luck went the way it did. Sunday the sun came out and the road dried. It was a glorious day. Good to meet you. See you next year.
Overall I’m happy with our efforts but racing Sunday would have been very beneficial and a lot more fun lol. Great meeting you as well!
Amazing dude! keep up the great work
Very appreciated, thanks and we’ll do our best!
It just seemed to me like the clutch was slipping, or was that all in the trans. Had plenty of power, but it didn't pull hard, to me anyway, I'd look at clutch while you are there and throw out brg. Thanks and I hope ya get it sorted out.
Thanks Dave, I noticed that too, wasn’t too noticeable in the car but after watching the videos I noticed that too. Just got the trans back, I messed up, when I put the new shifter in the throw was the opposite of the old one so I was actually leaving in direct drive.
@@johnfiore91 That will do it, and your probably not the only one that has done that ether.
@@davidaarons2488you were spot on!
@@johnfiore91 I was a auto tech for over 25yrs and thank the Lord my ears still work. I watch ya and if I can hear or see something I will help. Glad ya found it and now ya can let it eat. Hope all is well.
Nice job, well done
@@davidaarons2488 thanks man!!!
Gettin there, wishbone looks strong. Latemodel clutch looks good, I take it that it is hydraulic. Glad that it's coming together for ya.
@@davidaarons2488 thanks man, it is hydraulic, this one came from a dirt Modified. Coleby Frye drives one and had one in stock at his shop which turned out great as you saw.
Can’t wait to watch it rip!
What Transmission are you running?
It’s a winters 2 speed external clutch late model trans for now but will likely move to a sequential for Pikes Peak. The TTI 5 speed will fit and work great but it’s a 10-12k investment unfortunately.
Better to find out now than at the race. Hopen ya'd show how ya worked out the clutch set-up, maybe next time. Hope the wishbone works out.
Exactly what I thought, better there than at a hillclimb. I’ll cover the clutch soon, I want the shifter to be ironed out completely first though.
dude this is awesome!
Thank you!
Sounds great brother
Thanks brother!
After looking at 2 times, I think ya need more support for clutch lever and shifter; like more of a double shear bracket, needs to be more ridged. Wish I could help ya more, live in SW Fla.
I agree, I think the root problem is that there is something wrong with the clutch installation or it needs some kind of adjustment. I hope my late model buddy can stop over before the race to help me sort it out.
@@johnfiore91 Oh yes, they run them and multiply disk clutches also
Like your build. Was curious to why you didn’t use a traditional Jacob’s ladder instead of the watts linkage? Looks very well laid out and built. Good luck on the race!!
Thanks man, the rear end housing wouldn’t allow for a traditional Jacob’s ladder since it’s a closed tube late model rear. Had to use that so I can have the limited slip differential.
@@johnfiore91 makes sense. Didn’t figure in the limited slip diff. I too have always wanted to do a sprint car up pikes peak, I went on vacation up there and got altitude sickness so I don’t think I could do it. I’ll stick to my dirt stuff locally for fun as I’m getting older and would not ever have the funds anyway. I look forward to watching your Journey. 👍👍👍
So exited to see this thing flying up the hill
I can’t wait either, coming soon enough! I appreciate the support!
Have you considered taking the car to Bonneville ever?
It would be very hard to beat “The Green Demon” Damian Gardner’s record at 211 mph but the experience in it self would be epic, it would also be very expensive though lol
I love this. I raced winged sprints and midgets for 14 years. Few can appreciate what its taken for you to create this wonderful machine.
Thank you so much, I appreciate you noticing the details, only racers, especially sprint car racers would know what it has taken, 99% of the car is different from a conventional sprint car. It’s for that reason that I started this build series.
One thing always to look out for is drag links are definitely directional, if you get it backwards and then the tire contacts its possible to spin it right off the heim joints. Ask me how i learned that lesson. Lol !
Good advice again! Good thing this one has the s bend for the tire at the one end so it’s kind of idiot proof for me lol. Not sure if you do already or not but we always taped around the drag link straps on the frame and drag link which could prevent it spinning off. Do you still run?
@@johnfiore91 i cant wait to see this car run in anger. Very very cool machine.
We always squared the rear axle off the motor plate and then square the front axle too the rear axle on blocks and then check At ride height.
That’s good advice but it’s not how to measure the car that I’m worried about, that I’ve done too many times than I wanted to unfortunately lol, it’s the actual measurements for squaring, blocking, desired ride heights, etc. I have help with bars and shocks from Frank’s Shocks and Newlin Bar Service I’m fortunate to say. We’re making it turn both left and right so there isn’t any data and we have to start from scratch mostly. I like using a piece of aluminum angle off the motor plate for squaring, what’s your favorite thing to use and what class?
Coming along well, I don't know if ya saw what I posted in an earlier video, but I said "couldn't ya just flip over the LF bar to work on the RF" and that's what ya did, cool I thought that it might work. Are ya running a multiple disk clutch? I bet your getten excited to take it for a spin eh? Thanks for your military service. Be safe when ya shake it down.
Hope you’re doing better! I did see your last comment, it was after I mounted the new arm but great minds think alike! lol, and it’s a twin disc 7” clutch from Quartermaster.
I'm late watching this (was in hospital) but could ya just take a LF arm and flip it over, just a thought to get that tire clearance, or does it stick out farther when mounted?
Hope you’re doing better, the flipped arm worked out great!
Nice idea
Not sure, but I think that Holley deal learns what the engine is doing and adjusts
That’s correct sir! The ECU does learn as far as tuning goes but you still have to tune a lot of things besides the fuel mapping such as, turning the fans on at a certain temp, idle speed, etc. What’s nice is I can use the gauge screen to change things like that. I did use the Holley HP ECU for that reason though, it’ll help with elevation changes at Pikes.
@@johnfiore91 Good call, was at Pikes Peak when I was 39yrs old and that alt, effected me. Good luck
This is exciting! Almost ready to race!
Can’t wait to race with you!
Sounds clean and crisp, do you run that on high octane or alky? Is that LS 14 to1 or less
93 pump gas right now, will be race E85 soon, it’s running a base global file tune so that will require more work, it’s a stock gen 4 5.3 with 799 heads and better valves and valve train, stock bottom end, big camotion cam. I believe the 799 heads make 10.5:1 . This combo should be around 425-500whp. It will be rebuilt for Pikes Peak and will have twin turbos that should make 800+ whp. At least that’s the plan! lol
Man this thing is sweet
Thanks man!!!
4.8?
Gen 4 5.3
@@johnfiore91 What'd ya have to do, bump the timing fwd a tad? Sounded awesome.

Very kind words, thank you so much!
is that a transmission?
Yes it is! Currently a 2 speed late model trans with a 7” external clutch. Hope to have a sequential some day.
G'day nice video mate
rear torsion arms need to be centered better on birdcage? lots of movement, jmho
That’s correct, they should be at least close but in this case I don’t have my stops on and the rear isn’t squared yet, still kind of in mock up but thanks for the concern!
