Hollow Knight, But My Nail is Rusted and I Forgot How to Cast Spells
Переглядів 527Місяць тому
Hopping back to challenge run videos, I wanted to journey back to Hollow Knight before I do a Boss Analysis on the game - and in traditional style, what challenge is better than making fight ten times longer! Today, I try to beat as many Hollow Knight bosses as possible without Upgrading my Nail, Casting Spells (including healing), or Equipping Charms. There are still a few challenges left - an...

While I'm finishing scripting out my Elden Ring DLC Analysis, I figured I'd put together a much smaller video in the meantime - and what better game than one of my favorite recent indie games, Death's Door. Placed in the talons of a reaper, sent to collect the soul of a Forest Spirit - but when that soul is stolen from, you have to fight to find a way back home. It's got a fascinating roster of...

An Over-Analysis of From Software's Boss Design: Dark Souls
Bro put the lion in B tier 😂😂
Strong disagree about Romina. Ez, needs a buff and some lore. C grade.
mortal shell - a game that gets the core gameplay closes the "modern" soulslikes, not feeling like dark souls 1 or 2 like lies of p or the surge gets 1 thing wrong the bosses i would love to see you deconstruct the game's bosses and help put words to why the bosses fail in comparison to the souls games!
Lamenter does NOT have only 12k health, he has around 36k. It's insane how the fextralife site still has that misinformation.
If you're looking for more boss focused games I'd really recommend Furi. It's a game that is literally just one boss rush there's no basic mobs it's just one boss then the next. It has great music and quality bosses.
Another series you might enjoy with some cool bosses is the devil may cry games, I would love to see you analyze those bosses. Great video as always, keep up the good work.
I don't even need to watch the video to know that you, as a man of exquisite taste, gave Midra an S. I'm not even going to edit my comment if you didn't. Because I know that you did.
FYI, malenia actually has 33,251 health across both her phases, 18,000 is just the amount for the first phase.
erm…. waiter! waiter! more 3 hour elden ring videos please…….!!!
Messmer cinematic was amazing wdym!!!!, i got chills when i encountered him
I'm so excited for this video for real. I really wish you have more subs and views because I genuinely believe your analysis of From's boss design is really good.
heeeees BAAAAAAAACK
Chief Bloodfiend serves an interesting purpose I think, although probably not fully intentional. It punishes back dodging and panic dodging pretty well, considering often the best way to get hit by it is to dodge early and back (if you're already close up).
People gotta stop calling it “hollownest”. It’s “hallownest”
Some games I think would be fun for you try a stab at Bayonetta series The naruto ninja storm series Sekiro shadows die twice Lords of the fallen And finally metaphor refantazio Look forward to more videos! Keep up the great work!
Don't think I forgot about your awful Dark Souls 2 video. Shitting on the game for over an hour. Hating DS2 in 2024 in so fucking boring. Do better. Not giving it even an ounce of credit. You will never do anything in your life as good and impactful as DS2.
Your hatred is contagious. Inspiring even.
@ I enjoy committing to the bit
@@GLKyleRayner24As someone who likes DS2 more than 1 and 3, I'm pretty sick of the hate too.
As you've said, subjectivity is partially responsible for every boss ranking. So please don't see this as me angrily telling you how wrong you are. I'd just like to comment on a few things, that I personally disagree with. I'll edit this comment several times as I watch through the video. Dancing Lion: One of my favorite bosses of all time. I actually found his attack to be very learnable not DESPITE, but BECAUSE of how unique and weird they are. I found his spiraling flowing attacks to be very telegraphed, and while attack strings can be long, they don't have as many mid-combo switchups, which makes it quite obvious when combos end. I do agree with the Dancjng Lion being a little too pushy during his spiral spewing AOE. It's the only attack where I agree with the often brought up camera complaints for this boss. To be clear, the camera can be really annoying, but during this fight, it only really struggles when you're either too close to the boss, or the wall, the lather being something to avoid even with a working camera. I found this to be good test of spacial awareness. Of course the camera still shouldn't freak out as much as it does, but this is more of an overall issue and not one present with this boss more than with any other. In terms of moveset it is almost flawless. The "pushyness" during the spinning elemental spewing attack, and the randomness of the lighting being my only gripes. It's not quite an S but a high A, because of it's very fun and in my opinion learnable moveset, which is only elevated by the incredible score, atmosphere and exilerating visuals. This boss is straight up fun to watch. All in all, it does not deserve to be ranked even close to the great red bears, which is probably my other biggest disagreement. People complain about Radahn having too many AOE's but then this guy exists, does the same things, but doesn't look nearly as cool or feel good to learn. Once again because I realize that I sound more and more frustrated as I go on, I want to reiterate that I totally understand that there is not right or wrong take, and I'm glad that you find value in different things. The me the great red bears are among the worst enemies in SOTE. They aren't fun and then also dare having the most boring visual design out of all enemies. Fighting a comically disproportionately oversized bear in this moody dark fantasy realm just doesn't feel right. Metyr is not a fun fight. I absolutely agree with that part. However, while you criticized her for not feeling as improtant, or intriguing as Astell thematically, I couldnt disagree more. I always found Astell to look a little silly. Be it the colorful stars making up its body or the stupid grin, it always looked to me like a childrens interpretation of an eldritch horror. He is in my opinion overdesigned with too many features that are seemingly just there to look cool - the quantity of those feafure making it hard to take serious. Metyr, as bad as the fight is mechanically has a clear theme. It's the void, the emptiness, and chaotic origin of life. A cosmic mother of all, being abandoned, sitting in this eerily empty space. While Astell's arena is just space and looks like a galaxy wallpaper, her Arena is unidentifiable. There are no correlations and the entrace to the fight is a lot better. The player is given time to loom at Metyr and her vast empty space, before the music makes you question the nature of everything, and conveys this feeling of importance. Her design isn't dragged down by looking every complicated. And while Astell just uses gravity magic, she has her own school of magic that seems much grander. The way you described Metyr as simply not capturing your attention is how I feel about Astell while Metyr feels like the same idea but executed in a much better way. Apart from Midra, she feels to me like the most eldritch important being.
Funny how I have such a polar opposite opinion of the dancing lion. I hate everything about its phase 2. I hate the lightning's randomness, and the ice after-trails that damage you for being aggressive, and the increased hit boxes with the wind. And this is coming from me, who's a complete Malenia and PCR defender.
Promised Consort Radahn is amazing and so is most of Malenias fight, but I do think that Malenia punishes aggressiveness much more than the dancing Lion with her waterfowl. I learned a way to dodge every single one of PCR's moves pre and post nerv over multiple playthroughs, yet I still can't dodge Waterfowl if she decides to do it while I'm close to her. I found a way to negate all damage when I'm a little farther away, running from the first flurry and dodging through her following one's, but if she happens to start it while I'm right in her face, then it's just death. And once again, while I'm not amazing at the game, I'm good enough to learn other difficult fights down to every attack. The dancing Lion to me never felt too punishing in any unfair ways. It will punish mindless attacking, but even in the ice phase, the combos have clear finishers, and a jump towards the Lion during the big frost stomp will provide a big ounish window. The increased hitbox size during the wind phase makes things more difficult, but you can still stay close and hammer in once it is finished. The random lightning doesn't feel good. I do agree with that part. Just out of curiosity, how do you dodge waterfowl? I know ways, but those always inlude using specific items or equipment, or manipulating her AI in ways that just don't feel good. The rest of her fight is amazing.
@@taida8511 I have a video showcasing it. If you figure it out, she doesn't really punish aggression at all.
@@Boc_theSeamster the trick with the lightning is to just get up into his side and attack him, the lightning around him have fixed positions and can easily be avoided, hes ranged lightning attacks are also not hard to dodge if you expect it. As for the ice just attack his sides and use jumping attacks.
@@taida8511 for waterfowl i just run and jump the first flurry, you only need to be a meter away for that. The second flurry i just dodge and the last i just do a little walking dance and she misses completely. Alternatively you can block the first flurry with a medium shield or high guard boost strength weapon and enough endurance.
Huh, we had a surprisingly similar experience with Rellana. I also found her right after solitary knight, at blessing lv 2, and found her incredibly difficult at first. She took me 18 attemps total, the most of any dlc boss, but the learning process was one of my favourite things I've done in this game. Now I always do her early every time I play through the dlc, often underleveled on purpose
when it comes to the fallingstar beast i genuinely wished it was an fulgrown version or possibly an elder version instead of just being the lame base version found throughout the base game. it would have been a rather refreshing thing to find a rarer variant of a repeated enemy rather than a 1:1 copy of one.
I was wondering when the DLC boss video was gonna happen. Was looking forward to seeing it. Thanks dude 👌
My favorite description I've seen of the Midra fight and the music is this: "Midra is the epitome of you opened Pandora's Box, now you will die trying to close it before the world ends."
Welcome to Elden ring, we’ve got: Boss Boss but blue Boss but with a new weapon Boss but with new armour Boss but there’s 2 of them Boss but they’re a normal enemy Boss but they’ve got more spells Oh cool, there’s a new boss, nope, it’s the same one with a different model
You can run and even walk sideways to evade the clone attacks expect the dash to right double swipe. I can appreciate your effort but honestly a lot of this is just surface level knowledge, which all isn’t even true. Very enjoyable video though.
That's what I'm saying. I was pissed the whole time he was saying there's no consistent way to avoid any of them, and yet here I am avoiding them all consistently each time. Just continue running backwards and dodge the main hit for the clone attack after the meteors, run to the right and dodge the main hit for the non-meteor version of that attack, for the dashing clones just spam roll forward, and for the horizontal swipe clone attack just dodge forwards twice with good timing. It's really not that hard.
@@Boc_theSeamster For the dashing forward clones you can literally just crouch in front of him
Not gonna lie, was not a fan of the base game boss design (I still liked a lot of bosses). But the DLC was a huge improvement for me in boss design. My ranking pre DLC was Sekiro, DS3, and then a three way tie between DS1, BB, and ER. ER was deeper but didn’t reach the highs (for me) of Maria, Orphan, Manus, Artorias, etc. The DLC separated ER from DS1 and BB and put it in a virtual tie with DS3. Messmer, Midra, Bayle, Romina, the Death Knights, Scadutree Avatar, etc were all great. There were still some bad bosses and remnants of the base game boss design I didn’t like, but SOTE made me see what other people were praising about ER’s combat.
i'm not really sure how the base game remembrance bosses don't match up to those other bosses if not surpass them. The end game remembrance bosses beat all of those except Sekiro with Melania being the best one.
@ I actually think the end game line up for ER, other than Godfrey, is mediocre or terrible. Placidusax is a decent spectacle but kinda like an upgraded Seethe the Scaleless, and Elden Beast is honestly one of the worst final bosses Fromsoftware has ever made. Fire Giant, Godskin Duo are both awful as well. Malenia is one of the best boss fights they have ever done that is ruined by one move. I’ve beaten Malenia on level 1, but I still think Waterfowl is awful. Basically imagine giving Sister Friede a fourth phase and it is the Bed of Chaos, that is how I feel about Malenia.
I am so glad you like Gaius, cause I really do like him 😁
Honestly i got to say consort rahdan is kinda boring, it feels like there is only 2 or 3 combos, but i do like the boss still
on replay i don't think he's boring anymore, he has a lot of other attacks in second phase that all require different approaches, the first phase is just a warm up that can go by quickly.
I think the Tree Sentinels in the Hinterlands also act as a reminder as how far you’ve come in the game so far. These tree sentinels feel incredibly easy compared to everything else in the DLC, which is kind of insane considering how difficult they were when you first played the base game and saw one right outside the tutorial. With them acting as lore-important being outside the Shaman Village I enjoyed the fight quite a bit, liking them more then the ones in the base game even (except maybe the one in Limgrave.)
The moment i saw the tree sentinels i was overjoyed, i had been getting my shit kicked in for 40hrs at that point and i was so glad to see a familiar face.
yesss
2:25:28, rip Mimic Tear, their heart was stolen.
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO LOVES ROMINA ALMOST AS MUCH AS ME
you two aren't the only ones, i fought her as the first dlc boss just because i wanted the poleblade and the butterflies for the rest of the game.
Can't wait to fall asleep while watching this and having rewatch all of it.
You are super fucking underrated for how good your vids are man. Gotta comment to buff u on the algorithm.
If you're looking for games that would work well in this format then you should consider the rest of FromSoft's catalogue with the Armored Core games. Not sure if you want to go for the older ones but 6 should be easily doable.
Shoutout to Mohg for being one of the few to actually beat the Allegations in 2024
Have you ever played Shadow of the Colossus? It's basically the game that focuses it's entire existence to it's boss fights, it's very interesting and I think it would make a great boss analysis video.
I'd like to take a moment to highlight that what we are searching for in video games is EXPRESSION. The fact that I may hate the Scaduplant boss, but you LOVE the Scaduplant, is expression. The best games are the ones that allow you to express yourself while maintaining the overall theme enough for you to share the experience with others.
So Senessax has spready lightning as a byproduct of him being a traitor to the ancient dragons during their war instead of the water in the arena. So in short he doesn't suck because of the arena he sucks because he's an asshat
This is how I found out there’s another dancing lion
This is how I found out lamenter did stuff
This is how I found out Elden ring had DLC
I’d personally love it if you could do a video like this analyzing the God of War Greek and Norse games and Cuphead and Shadow of the Colossus
I find it so fascinating just how much people can have opinions that are so incredibly different. I really like Metyr, but I understand the flaws and why other people wouldn’t like it. What shocks me is how much you didn’t like the dancing lion. I swear I am not just saying this to be contrarian, but the death blight dancing lion is my favorite boss fight of all time. I’ve fought this boss four times now and only like it more every time I fight it. I think a core difference in playstyle is that I completely ignored the basilisks and treated them like an environmental hazard. I was forced to just be constantly moving, rotating around the arena as the dancing lion dove in and out of attack range. I should also say that before this boss my favorite was the other dancing lion, and before that Gael.
My extremely subjective remembrance rankings are: Dancing Lion-GOAT Rellana-S Putrescent Knight-A Messmer-S+ Scadutree Avatar-A Gaius-B (No Music) Metyr-A (I just love the spectacle) Bayle-S Midra-S+ Romina-S Radahn-S
The Divine Beast Dancing Lion with the Blight got a lot more love than I expected - and for me, it's just chasing those basilisks that turned into a mess. And that's one of my favorite thing about these games - there is so much detail and love poured into a lot of these bosses that there's very few that I think aren't loved by someone. Also, solid grades - and yeah, I really wish Gaius had music. I like him more than you seem to, but it's strange he's the only one lacking a track.
@@TheAkasharoseWith regards to Gaius, I actually really like his move set and have no issue with his charge. I just personally value style, lore, and vibes very highly, and Gaius with no music feels a little limp.
@@TheAkasharose if you use the torch, the basilisks leave you alone
It's one of the few bosses where you can get invaded too. Happened a few times to me as a sunbro & it elevated the fight to one of my favorites in game
I have an idea for the last giant, in phase two, he starts rampaging and breaks the wall to that fallen over building in the arena and thats where the key is for the pursuer, also that key opens up every door that has the same texture as the door to the pursuer such as the kings gate door. Also, unless you plan on 100% the game, the ruined sentinels is optional, if you kill the flexile sentry you can go around the sentinels and completely miss them.
you CAN dodge through the rellana twin moon attack. Its harder than jumping, but you can do it.
Greetings
If you fight the guardian ape first when you try to go to the other village it makes them spawn and it suck haaaaard
God, I couldn't imagine a blind playthrough needing to overcome that to progress that area. That sounds terrifying.
Predicting it now Scadutree Avatar gets a B grade. Scadutree avatar is honestly my favorite boss in the game not even kidding.
We will be seated. Can’t wait to see how he ranks Radahn lol (I liked him)
Let's goooo Yet another feature-length analysis of a game I haven't played. I can't wait🤩
