ABOUT US - KATH & HOWIE
Since our first encounter in 1998 in the Edinburgh Backpackers' Hostel, we've achieved a lot together, not least of which has been to raise an incredible young woman who has travelled extensively with us.
We took up walking and hiking a few years ago and now we've walked more than 2000km together as a couple. Really together. Usually side-by-side. Sometimes we talk. Often we move in companionable and comfortable silence. Frequently we laugh. Less frequently we gripe, or cry. We kiss on every bridge we cross. We're doing alright.

Ep 92 Hiking and staying in a castle at St Briavels on a budget UK tour
August 2023. We visited family in the south of England and then set off on a tour of YHA 'youth' hostels located in spectacular natural surroundings. This episode takes us to a castle, no less, where we bunk in separate men's & women's towers. We get a look at Offa's Dyke Path on the Welsh-English border & love the vivid green of Gloucestshire.
We booked our beds when YHA had a great summer sale happening and felt very lucky that beds were available in this location. Check out the hostel here - www.yha.org.uk/hostel/yha-st-briavels-castle

Introducing Pumpkin, Pepi & Ponyo. Housesitting these three clever kitties was a total joy. It’s so rewarding when shy cats decide that they can trust us and we get the chance to play and cuddle. They were big fans of the paper shopping bags we brought home from work. We have some availability for housesitting in coming months, and we’re especially keen to look after cats because our work is of...

There are still many accessible functional pater-nosters in Prague. but the reasons why tourist access was restricted are not accidents. On the contrary, these types of elevators are statistically safer than normal ones. The number of defects per device is the same because it uses identical mechanical elements. Electric motor, link chains, ropes. But because the cabins are interconnected and balanced in both directions, gravitational fall is almost impossible. Not quite, but it hasn't been recorded yet. In addition, in the event of a malfunction, you do not have to wait for rescuers or elevator operators and you can leave the elevator immediately. In addition, the design allows for very easy manual movement with the handle in case someone "forgets" to get out before the malfunction and gets stuck in one of the turning points. You won't like the reason why access to the lifts was restricted for tourists, but that's what they are - tourists. At the time when these lifts were built, they were not designed for the rush of tourists and they simply cannot handle it mechanically, and the mechanical parts are therefore being extremely worn out. These are still common elevators for daily using. Not touristic attraction.
They are so cute 😍
1:51 not exactly "13-something" - Emperor Charles IV was fond of symbols, so the moment of the opening of the construction is the most perfect odd palindrome of the Christian calendar - the construction of Charles Bridge started in 1357, on July 9 at 5:31 am - so 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1. 2:17 not exactly "restored" rather "replaced" - the original statues were gradually moved from the bridge to the lapidarium and replaced with copies - weather conditions, birds and tourists were damaging the original statues, so it was decided to replace them and preserve the originals. 10:07 You went to the wrong church - the mummified hand of the thief hangs inside to the right of the entrance to St James the Greater Church in Malá Štupartská Street - barely 100 metres east of Týn Church (which you didn't get into).
fridge cat!?!
😅 yeah, he shoots in when you open the fridge to keep cool. That's Sammy, the rescue Penang kitten so I think he knows a good home when he sees one
Terima kasih kak
Gembira anda menyukainya! 😀
Thank you for the awesome video! ❤
Thank you for the awesome cats 😻
Great vid! Love this new style you're trying. Very fun storytelling :)
Thanks ☺️
You two are great, your appreciation & understanding of this area is wonderful. Can you guess I'm a South Aussie, this is my backyard (well bit of a drive from Adelaide).
Aww, thanks ☺️, so glad you’re enjoying our videos! We fell in love with South Australia and Adelaide, we don’t know why it gets so much bad press? Also loved going to Shilow Hills campground near Ironbark to see Koalas for the first time ❤️ Hopefully coming back to Adelaide early next year… 😁
Wooo! Found a vanlife WA channel.
👋Glad you're coming along for the ride 😀 We also do housesitting and travel videos too, we're about a year behind in our videos so plenty too come 😂 Our Instagram and Facebook page are up to date though, currently in Penang doing a housesit for four cats 😻 I saw you left a comment on the last Bibbullmun video but I didn't get to read the whole thing and can't find it now? Howie
One of the best things I take hiking are my crocs for situations just like this. They are bulky, but I carabiner them to my bag.
Yes, I’ve just discovered the world of Crocs and I agree! I’ve recently started thinking about another E2E, maybe next year 🤔
At my local pharmacy they have travel sized Bushman’s insect spray. I carried some on the Cape to Cape and along with my Crocs it was the best thing I took.
Helloo,On the website says that the motor is 500W and also 250W, what does it say the sticker on the motor of the ebike? otherwise would be illegal in UK
@@Robyx18 Hi, sorry unable to answer your question at the moment because we’re in Penang for another month and the bikes are in Australia 😁
Hey guys! Howie, I recall in one of the Bibb videos that you used a really cool lighter (?) to light a fire. Can you please let me know which one it is? Thanks so much. :) Nej
Not sure which lighter you're referring to? Let me know which video its in and I'll refresh my fading memory and let you know 😃
@@TheMuseumofUs I can't remember which vid either, but I think I've worked out it must have been some kind of butane lighter? Anyway, it's all good. I'll just be taking a little mini lighter. :)
I am due to start the Bibb at the end of August (in lieu of the Camino as I hurt my back in March), as a spur of the moment - change of life/what the hell and I doing thing! LOL. I decided this about 2 weeks ago. Am in my mid 50's and I'm just going and (hopefully) doing it! I stumbled upon your walk and have thoroughly enjoyed watching each video. Just loved your videos, honesty, senses of humour and valuable content. I was so there with you, I too had a bit of a tear at the end of your journey - Bob - what a legend hey? You all are! Kissing on the bridges; food bombs; Bob's notes in the sand and the last shot of the three of you sitting on the last bench overlooking the water was just precious. Thanks so much for the inspo! x
Beautiful sentiment, thanks. Great timing - we've just been spending time in & around Denmark and reminiscing. Hoping to see Bob next week, in fact. Hope your back is doing well now, and would love to hear about your progress on the beautiful Bib. Let us know if you need help with a food drop or something. We're nomadic but in WA from September on. One step and one 'day hike' at a time... On on!
@@TheMuseumofUs Thanks guys! Yes, in the throngs of planning which is no mean feat! This will be my first thru hike, so nothing like throwing myself in the deep end! x
Thank you so much for your insights! Am starting the Bibb in Sept and this has been very helpful! :)
Thanks for watching. Are you starting north or south?
@@TheMuseumofUs N to S - like to get the hills out of the way first! Might regret that, but I'll give it a damn good go! LOL
Wow great drone shots! What kind of drone did you use and how did you go keeping it charged? Was it light to carry?
Thank you 😁 I’m still using the first version of the DJI Mini, they’re up to version 4 now! But Droneathon (a friend named the drone 😂) is still flying strong. The drone itself is only 250grams but I carry 2 spare batteries and a power back and recharge on the rest days in towns. About 1kg in total, but if you want those shots you have to take the weight 🫠 I travel light so it balances out. Heaviest I got on the whole trip was 16kg including water and 7 days of food
Do you get much condensation in the cooler months? Nice layout to btw.
Thanks 😁 no condensation as we have a vent and also a Maxxfan which can blow air in or suck air out causing through ventilation
Wunderbah
I love when a drink is so good it makes Howie look angry 😂 #StrawberryBeer
Mmmmm, Strawberry beer 🍺
Welcome in Germany
Thank you so much! We fell in love with Germany and its people on this trip and will definitely be back!
First 😄 very nice and great to have youse back.👌
Thanks so much! 😁 Had a little time off making videos but getting back into it now, hopefully will get some more out before we travel again and have more videos to do! 😂
Love this city.
So do we! Don’t understand why it has a sad reputation?!
Awww I love how you two tell the story of your days! It's so well done 🥰
Thank you so much! I’ve only got a couple of episodes of your Camino left to watch, is she going to make it!?! You have done so well to go back and try again after your first attempt 👏👏👏😁
@TheMuseumofUs awww thank you! It was terrifying to try again but im so glad I did! 😊
Beautiful creatures, love the close up shots.
Thank you, missing these two already 😻
love your food hacks!
Can I carry a kid on the back?
It looks like it but not really … not sure what the seat at the back is for? I don’t think the tire would handle it 🤷♂️
When I arrive at my destination I want to lock the bike to something with a chain and padlock. On my usual bike I would pass the chain through through the triangle form by the cross bar. There seems to be nothing similar to pass the chain through on this bike when its folded. Any suggestions?
This is a issue but we manage to tie up through the wheels or wrapping the lock around a couple of times to make it shorter. Also when we can, we’ll take the battery and sometimes the seat as well to make the bike less appealing to thieves
Such cutie pies!!!
They are! Amazingly Pepi, the grey one who plays the most in the video, hid from us for the first week!
Es normal que se mueva un poco la batería ?
Hi, it rattles a bit but you can add a small piece of rubber mat under the battery to stop any noise. They are fun bikes to have and we get around on them alot but we think of them as ' a scooter with a seat'. 😁
Very nice! If you do not mind, I will link my readers to your good video as I walked the walk 20 years ago and now I am posting my daily memories each day on my facebook page.
We’re so glad you enjoy our videos, and we’re more than happy for you to link to any of them 😁
Scenery and waters look sooooo pretty.
It was so clear and so many fishies 🐠
I was going to say i hadn't seen a video from you guys in ages, then clicked on you page and there were heaps to watch :-) Damn algorithms etc. etc.
Yeah, don’t think we’re high on UA-cam’s priorities 😂 Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the new videos. We will go silent again until Dec as we’re in Europe and have just started the Camino del Norte in Spain today! Will be updating regularly on our Instgram and Facebook Cheers 👍

Amazing footage of a beautiful landscape.
Thanks Roger, we’ve just landed in England, see you in a couple of weeks!
Just beautiful
Thank you 😊 It is an amazing place
Love!!!
Very nice 👌✌️
How do you find sleeping in the van widthways? Isnt the ford transit quite narrow? Im wondering if I'll be able to fit in a bed like yours as im planning to buy a converted transit next week. Im 5'5 so hoping i can fit across without needing to sleep diagonally or lengthways
Hi Dan, I think you should be able to sleep across a Transit, we’re 5’6ish and we can sleep across albeit a tight fit 😁 It does free up a bit more for space in the rest of the van. Might depend on what year your Transit is add to how wide it is. Also if you can raise your bed to the widest part of the van that will help. Happy to answer any other questions, good luck with your van, Howie 😁
Stunning!
It really was!
Going to Ubirr in a couple of weeks, can't wait! Its one of the places I remember most clearly from a trip I took in 1998...
I reckon it's best to either go early in the morning to beat the tour crowds or later and find a tour that has a guide and follow them for all the good info. Have fun!
Incredible rock art, thanks for sharing👌
Cheers Rudi!
oooh. Nice nature drama. Fire hawks!
Wild indeed - the NT totally delivers!
That’s a gorgeous park, despite the mosquitoes, crocs, and the controlled burn. We’re missing you guys as we walk the Camino again! ❤
Saw you were in Burgos and remember our first meeting at a cute pizza place near the cathedral ❤️ We're excitedly planning our Camino del Norte now. Seeing as we're all Camino addicts now, I don't doubt we'll meet again on the Way xx
Welcome back, nice to see some more of your adventures.👍👌
Thanks mate 😁 Heading to Europe next month for another Camino so plenty of vids to come 🥾
I'm sorry that you couldn't go on but it is understandable. Did you have any issues with mice getting into your hung packs? I have a cannister that is too weighty for this particular trip so any advice would be appreciated ☺️ Was the fishing line fused?
I think we had a particularly bad year for mice but it’s better to prepare! We didn’t have any trouble with the hanging with fishing line method but they will chew ANYTHING that is left outside of your tent! I’m not sure what fused line is? Amazing country though, have fun
@@TheMuseumofUs Thank you! I set off next month, can't wait. I hope at some point you guys are able to return to complete the trail ☺️
@@jaalaj6610 We’re off to Spain soon to do another Camino. We really enjoy them
No way it’s mrs cowgill
That’s intriguing. Are you talking about Judy?
Thinking about doing 1000km solo, my late brother made it to Walpole hut while being legally blind. I hope to put a small plaque on the hut in his memory...
Your end-to-end is a great idea, Jay, and your brother must have been determined and tough! We'd love to provide some trail angel support if you do go ahead and if we are in the area at the time. Please let us know
gday, thanks for posting, loved the drone flyover the spillway, I did a lot of the rock drill/blast on that job, sure is a lot more tranquil and scenic these days :):)
Thanks, glad you’re enjoying the videos. It’s a beautiful area, have you walked this section?
@@TheMuseumofUs Gday, I did a small walkaround in 2011 while I was doing driller training at the coal mines, unfortunately I've now gotta use a wheelchair, so, not lately :) pretty amazing how nature claims back its own, the staining on the rock walls looks fanastic, thanks again for posting this, the rock drill/blast was done 1988 and 1989 and the whole job completed late 1990 so the excavation is now 34 years old, the closest big trees were totally stripped of leaves and small twigs from the blasting (VERY hard rock) and they have regrown beautifully, The excavated rock was used on the upstream dam face, blanket drain and downstream toe weighting. One of our biggest blasts caused cracks in the Premier Hotel where a lot of us were staying, a friday so we got a great reception from the owner when we rolled up for after work drinkies :), the Geo engineers deduced the shock front had followed the river valley for nearly 12 kays. overall the Harris dam project was one of the most fun jobs I've ever been on, 2 years, great crew that I'm still mates with, huge pay and quite a few friendly local ladies was a bonus :). all the best, Dave B
This is so interesting to read! Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives another way to see the place
@@TheMuseumofUs Glad you liked the history, if you go there again could you please do another drone video with a closeup of both sides of the rockwalls ?, Thanks again :)
❤❤❤
First loving your videos, but how doesn't the government have a bit of money for those toilets, it's a world renowned hiking trail that attracts a sizable tourist dollar? Keep up the good content.Ray.
Thanks Ray, glad you’re enjoying the videos! We also walked the Camino in Spain and came across 2 public toilets in over 800kms of walking!😂
