Trying to Sight Cast Tailing Drum on West Cove
Went out to West Cove in the kayak. Did not have much luck until I found some tailing fish.

That's some calm water for Black Bayou, what's your limit on wind speed that you'll take the yak out on?
It really depends on where I'm going, but over 15 mph, I'll start to reconsider going. It mostly depends on what your kayak can handle and what you're comfortable with.
What size hooks do you recommend...I've been using 7/0 but I think I should be using a larger size
I currently use 16/0 circle hooks for my shark rigs, which I think is good if you're targeting 5 to 7 foot range.

On Highway 27 in Cameron Parish, there is the West Cove Boat Ramp. You can launch there to get to West Cove.

caught my first redfish and stingray back to back within 3min of each other in florida inland fishing in the gulf near tampa kinda in the marsh area with shrimp...redfish was 8lbs its was massive. caught it back in like 2010 when i was in 7th grade...then the stingray right after was only about a foot across maybe a bit bigger and it faught like big 20lbs channel catfish i catch up here in lake erie in ohio where i live. stingrays fight like crazyyyyyyy so do reds
I love catching redfish because of how hard they fight. I never caught a stingray before, though.

Have you ever eaten gafftop? I have not but heard/read that they are kind of tasty. Never hardheads though.
I have not, but I do hear it's good.
Gafftops, even hardheads, are excellent! The key is to bleed the fish by cutting off the tail and putting them back in the net or, on a stringer. They taste even better than freshwater catfish if you bleed them, I kid you not!
One of the most enjoyable surf fishing trips I ever had was in the surf just to the east of the calcasieu ship channel. One of those very rare days where green water had come in all the way to the shore and I cast net for finger mullet. Caught a bunch of nice trout and smaller reds. Tore them up until the dolphin came to feed and play. Haven’t finished the video yet but this reminds me so much of that day. Great video.
Nice video. Whiting are fantastic to eat. Good white meat. If you catch them around 11-12 inches, definitely give them a try. Also called kingfish. Northern and gulf. Think there may be one more but having a senior moment and don’t remember right now.

I caught a 7ft at Mayes Beach last week..You can catch with every cast down there, 10 mile's from Holly..Not far out either..

@@SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater dmr.ms.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/shark-id-book.pdf this is a good resource for sharks in our area. Also I would recheck regulations but I am certain you cannot use an offset hook in LA when targeting sharks. Not sure on reds, drum and jacks, etc. but I am positive it’s a no go for sharks. Also I am pretty sure we cannot use stainless steel either. Tight lines

It's a section of beach between Holly Beach and the ship channel jettys. It's a protected sea bird nesting site, so no vehicles are allowed.
