This is the music I wish I'd been around for when it was new. Imagine being a teen when bunches of great swing records were coming out every month. It was as exciting as the Beatles, with the added wonder of virtuoso performances. Falling in love on the dance floor, thinking of home while posted overseas during the war, going to the ballroom in your town to see these orchestras live. My parents saw the Charlie Spivak Orchestra in Times Square on their honeymoon, and stepped out into the VJ Day celebration.

Beautiful, Wonderful Recording! I have this on my compact disc! Furthermore, all music and all the songs were prerecorded in the early part of 1938 before actual filming began! The principal filming with all the actors and actresses was completed in the middle of February 1939 the Kannas Scenes being filmed last directed by King Vidor. The musical score was recorded and added after the filming was finished, however the Optimistic voices were played with orchestrations that Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr and Terry the Female Brindle Cairn Terrier who portrayed Toto danced and skipped out of the poppy fields to the recording in November of 1938.

Great compilation! But you misidentified Sterling Young. It's actually Charles "Buddy" Rogers with his orchestra.

My brother was in the USAF and played in the Glenn Miller Band...while he was stationed in Germany. Magical.

The stereo sound really is amazing, thanks for posting this. In the late 1980s or 90s I gave my grandma a tape of a new reproduction of Glenn Miller tunes and she said "that's my music!, but where can I get Artie Shaw...he was my favorite". I understand now grandma.

Helen Forest/ Artie Shaw, perhaps the best of the big bands.

Don't give a flying s**t if it is stereo or air fried, it IS a chance to hear some of Artie's band which doesn't happen often these days. Artie and Harry were the most musical of the big band era and always worth a listen.
