      You’re totally right. Sorry that wasn’t addressed in the video, I was clearly distracted by the unpleasant playing experience, haha. Absolutely, I even address that in the video. But there are more effective ways to teach optimal pressure without causing the player/student/subject/whomever to play so flat. The flatness is distracting, and defeats the purpose of learning how to play with less pressure, because you can't even accurately get notes out.

    I'm a hobbyist trumpet player that plays primarily lead in a local big band, with occasional church gigs a few times a year. I currently have a Bach Strad 43 bell reversed leadpipe horn with the standard 25 leadpipe that I've played on since high school (the horn is from 1999 roughly). I've been considering looking for something that would be a step up from the Bach and this horn has captured my attention lately. Would you recommend this for someone in my situation, or would it be more of a sideways move?

    • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 2 роки тому

      Hmm, good question! In my opinion, the Bach would probably be a better horn for lead. The Adams, while called the "LT", is still heavier (and therefore slower to respond) than something like a Bach. While I've been able to play lead gigs with the A4, it just isn't an appropriate fit for me in that context. It's really all about what you want from a horn though. The original A4 (and this LT model) were actually designed for a salsa player, so it's definitely not incapable of high notes hahaha. Just a little more work for me than I want to put in. As a jazz horn though? Forget it...Thing is unbeatable in that department

    • @GamerDad1987
      @GamerDad1987 2 роки тому

      @@Sam_Merrill my Bach doesn't have a very good jazz sound. It works well so far for lead playing, and for solos at church where a brighter sound fits, but I've never been able to get that dark and even jazz sound out of it. I also tend to hit a wall with the Bach around a double G to A or so. It could be my own skills that I'm running up against, bit I've also heard that Bach Strads are not great lead horns for the extreme upper register.

    • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 2 роки тому

      @@GamerDad1987 hmm, the 43 should be a pretty neutral-to-dark sounding bell. Maybe it’s your mouthpiece? That can lead to a whole separate safari, but a good rule of thumb is to keep the rim diameter/contour the same, but change cup depth/backbore for different musical applications (i.e. If you play a Bach 3 rim, stick to that rim, but try deeper cups). Also, sound concept comes from within. As corny as it sounds, your approach/the sound you hear in your head will always shine through no matter what horn/mpc you’re playing. Want dark? Think dark! Want bright? Think bright! It’ll take some time, but with practice you’ll start to notice how easy it is to manipulate your own sound just by thinking about it. As far as Bach’s not being great for lead, that’s just a bunch of bunk, haha. Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, all those guys in Jerry’s section played Bachs & they all sound way better than I ever will, lol. Like I said in my last comment, it’s all about what gear you’re comfortable on :)

    Surely it's flatter because the pipe has been extended right? That's what happens. But, yeah I'm not convinced enough to spend $80 on it.

    • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 2 роки тому

      Totally- I was hoping the length could be counteracted by pushing the tuning slide all the way in, but it's just too dang long! If they could figure out how to make the whole pressure-release valve smaller, it could maybe be a more convincing buy. But it also has to be long enough to accept a mouthpiece AND enter a mouthpiece receiver, so there's really no perfect way of doing it. Appreciate the comment! I might revisit this from a more pragmatic mindset and give it another try, who knows! It's still sitting in my desk drawer, haha

    • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 2 роки тому

      No, the Adams probably weighs about the same as a Bach Strad. They call this the "LT" because the standard A4 is a very heavy horn, so this model is lighter in comparison. If you plan to stick to the more commercial side of things, try something like a lightweight Bach or Yamaha. Or if you want an Adams, the A1 and A5 are real solid instruments that are a bit lighter than this one here. Hope this all helps!!

      Hey Jim! Appreciate the comment. I did not try the large bore or yellow brass bell, as I had this horn custom made and shipped directly to me. I tend to prefer medium large horns anyway though (all my Bb’s are ML). From what I understand, the gold brass just adds a little complexity and warmth to the sound than yellow would, and bore size has more of an impact on volume and sound wave amplitude then blow and resistance of the instrument itself. • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 3 роки тому

      All of my instruments have synthetic felts, so I’ve never had a problem cleaning them this way. I suppose I should’ve clarified that if your instrument is older, a student horn, or if you play anything has conventional felts, you’ll want to only submerge them up to a certain point so they don’t get wet or damaged. As far as your claim that professional cleanings aren’t necessary, that is simply incorrect. A professional cleaning will undoubtedly extend the life of your instrument and suggesting otherwise is foolish. Thanks for your feedback!

Believe it or not, same pitch issue there. I kind of figured there would be some intonation issues with all of these because they’re adding length to the instrument, but I hoped it would be at least manageable, or that the player could counteract it by pushing in the main tuning slide. Unfortunately though it brings the pitch so far under that I can’t get passed it, rendering it to live out its days as a paperweight on my desk hahaha. Do you think this case would fit a large flugelhorn and trumpet?

      I'd say so- my Yamaha 8315G fits in there fine, and it's definitely not "small" as flugels go haha.

      S.W. Merrill Music thank you so much! I have a kanstul 1525 which not only has a big bell, but also is quite wide and tall.

    I have been looking into these cases for the past few days. I'm in college and I have a torpedo case for my trumpet and a really old flugelhorn with the original, bulky, case. With my torpedo, I have the mute bag on it and it is pretty heave and my flugel case is also pretty heavy. Does this case cut down the weight of carrying two horns? Awesome video! It helped me a lot. Also, if you don't mind me asking, where did you order yours from?

      Hey Josh! Sorry for the late reply- I think this would be a good fit for your needs. You might still need something separate to carry all your mutes, but I’ve loved having both horns in one case. Being able to throw the case on my back has made for some super quick and easy gig load-outs. Appreciate the kind words! Hope this helps you, man :)

    Hi, Thank you so much for your video ! Is the Gard bag is hard and shock resistant enough ? Do you feel your instruments safe in it ?

    • @Sam_Merrill
      @Sam_Merrill 4 роки тому

      Hey Remi! I definitely feel like this bag is safe and strong enough for day-to-day travel. The padding in the bag is very thick and dense, and the horns fit pretty snugly in there, so I think you'd be fine with this case. I wouldn't recommend checking it if you're planning on flying with your horns, but it should conform to carry-on requirements and be super easy to travel with that way :) Hope this helps!!
