Fez (Fes) Morocco on the Hasselblad X2D Earth Explorer: Morocco Part 5
Final part of my Morocco series with National Geographic! This was a really amazing trip and I hope you all have been enjoying the videos. Fez (Fes) was such a beautiful city and so much fun to explore. The tannery especially was a highlight for me. The Hasselblad X2D medium format camera was again wonderful to use. I love this platform, so I hope you've been enjoying my photos with it!

My Goodness! I was just at Yodobashi Camera here in Tōkyō (Akihabara), looking at and lusting after the X2D and 2,5/55V. I had originally gone in to buy the Zeiss Milvus 2/135mm, and ended up just browsing the Hasselblad stand. And since you get a 10% off and duty free shopping at Yodobashi, I really REALLY wanted to pick-up the body and this lens. Luckily, I didn't. as I told myself that I needed to do more research. Also, as I looked at and tried the lenses at the stand, they just felt of a lesser quality to me. I have 4 Zeiss lenses from the V-Series (CF versions) film camera and they feel solid, well-built and of a much higher quality. I just could not get passed how flimsy the manual clutch felt on these new v lenses. I must admit, the system is beautiful, but in my head, I feel like the system could be riddled with reliability issues, and not just with the lenses.

I have been itching to buy this camera for some time now. Downloaded plenty of raw files to play with. I have also had the x1dii two different times but ended up selling it. I may just rent the x2d for my next trip to Colorado or somewhere out west and give it a go. I would love the 55 and maybe something wider. Thanks for the video!

Glad you enjoyed! To be clear, too, I *highly* recommend the camera, especially if you wanna just rent it for a trip and try it out. If you do, would love to hear your thoughts on it and how it compares to the X1DII. Never tried that one out.

The story she tells is interesting. But the video does not even meet a minimum quality standard, poorly exposed and with a wired microphone passing through the image and held in the hand. It is a shame and a disgrace, because in the same interview she highlights her experience as a commercial photographer, which means knowing how to light professionally, that is, well.

Another big loom! Yay! The fiber crafts that come out of Morocco are truly beautiful. I think my favorite image from this grouping is the alley with all of the yarns hanging or possibly drying. Looks like the X2D did a fine job on the photos. I just love the color rendering on the Hasselblads.

I had a feeling you'd like that one! And yeah, the handiwork here was really incredible. I'm glad you liked that shot! I *loved* all the colors, so I'm glad I got a shot that came out alright from there. And I agree, the way Hasselblad's color science works is incredible. I rarely do much to "correct" colors in editing.

Sort of sounds like Leica time lines. Sending a camera in for a repair or CLA feels like you sending it into a black hole. At these price points they should have loaner lens or bodies for situations like this that end up taking a long time. But that maybe too much to ask. :).

it's originally overexposed and toned down way too much hence it has these weird patches / artifacts. given the rarity of the interview, should have given her the other pair of that rode mic you have. good content nonetheless

Yeah I was also having issues with the mic, hence me awkwardly holding it between us the whole time. 😅 It was kind of a mess, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to interview her, and I wanted to be respectful of her time and not have her sit there while I tried troubleshooting things. I personally think they should have sent you a loaner lens. I work in video production and my aputure distributor gives me loaner demo units when one of my lights needs to go in for repair that takes over a month. But I haven’t had to send a piece of camera equipment in for a long duration.

This did not put me off from go for Hasselblad if I get the possibility to buy one. But I do think they should bring back the the ability to service lenses to Sweden. And also as alot of people have suggested, that in cases of services that drags out over a month, they should offer a loner or just change out the lens. The small cost for them to just change out the lens would be a win in customer happiness. Why not just have a change out system support. If it brakes within a year, just change out the lens. After the guarantee is out. Offer a service support fee, if they cant fix it within a week the service is free or get a refurbished like new lens back.

    • @PavornocPhotography
      @PavornocPhotography 8 днів тому

Agreed on all points. I’m still going to be shooting Hasselblad; I love the cameras and lenses. But it would have been nice to have something to have as a temporary replacement during the repair time or something else to help support, which I think would be well within their ability to do.

8:42 Professionals taking paid gigs with that kind of gear can rent the gear they need for a shoot and bill the expense through to the client. And professionals who rely on this gear on a daily basis for project work will budget for redundancy in the gear they use - yes, that means two bodies and lens options to always have redundancy.

Hello… Thank you for your video. I’m going through a similar situation but for a very different reason with the 55mm F/2.5 V lens. The lens cannot zone focus using DOF in full manual mode. Regardless of aperture setting the lens will render out of focus at infinity. I’m certain that many photographers don’t use zone focusing often or at all and tend to rely more on autofocus… which does work great. I believe that some or all of these lenses are either mis-calibrated or there is a design flaw in the manual focus mechanism. Two of these lenses on two different X2Ds have this issue. I have a case with Hasselblad open. The second lens tested was Hasselblad’s North American Sales Representative! He’s currently now on the case with Sweden. So if everyone with this lens could test their 55 V lenses using DOF markings and check the resultant focus at infinity it would be very interesting to see to what extent this is occurring.

Due to the heavy use nature of my work, I moved into the Hasselblad system through multiple X1DII and low usage HC/HCD lenses, mostly orange dot. Thanks for the video. It’s always interesting to see how different manufacturers handle repairs. I’ll just say it could have been worse for you. I had a €4,500 Sony A7RV that had a defective touchscreen two months after purchase. The repair service diagnosed a non-existent water damage without even opening the camera and replaced a non-defective part that I then had to pay for-€350. They took almost three months to find the error and didn’t repair a front dial that was definitely broken as well. No apology, no loaner device, nothing. By far the worst repair service I’ve experienced across three camera brands. So if that’s all that happened with Hasselblad, I would definitely stick with them. :D

The biggest problem with "Hasselblad" today is that it is NOT Hasselblad ! It is Chinese DJI and they ditched either cut down or ditches services in several countries, plus prices are too high for what you not get ! I used HASSELBLAD 6c6 Cameras in the 1980´s and 1990´s, back then you could trust the quality and the service was superb. I do not trust Chines products, I hear it is the same problem with "Volvo" cars. Get a Japanese Fuji GFX camera.

Sony support was ok to work with but it took them two and a half months to get the lens back to me. Shortly after that I left Sony for Canon. It was not due to this but other reasons. I had the luck to be able to shoot with a Canon R6 for a few hours from someone that i knew. I love long exposure photography and the bulb timer built into the menu system is just perfect for that. So about 6 months later I made the switch. Back to why i posted this. Sony is a big brand as you mentioned but it took them for ever to get the lens back to me.

That’s unfortunate that not even they are immune from things like this. If I was someone relying on this gear to make a living, that would really be an issue.

Not acceptable at all. I hope I don’t get the same problem.

ever since I noted FREE Hassies to UA-camrs, I smelt something horrible! Delays at Hasselblood and Leica are simply unacceptable..

a great backup is to use rental companies that offer this type of lens on as need-basis

For the price, they should offer replacements and resell the refurbished units. Or at least offer a better additional paid warranty that covers replacements.

Sometimes you have to be tough with companies. They only care about their own interests.

I think you should have been more firm with them for this delay, they should have compensated you or even given you a replacement lens especially since this lens is expensive and should have been worth its price. Maybe if you threatened to sue them they would have given you a new one instead of your lens?

In Europe you're not allowed to let your customers stranded for 5 months, it's 30 days or money back
