thank you for the instructions. I almost lost hope how to fix this error. Brother's website also doesn't have this solution. They tell you you to choose 'Mono' color to skip using color cartridges if you have Black toner left but that option didn't work for me.

How to reset Brother HL-L3280CDW toner?

It worked on my brother hl l3230cdw too!! I think what you do different in addition to the quick press in the correct order is to also raise it all the way up until it clicks.thank you!!!

This won't work on the MFC-L8850CDW because it has no actual clicky or mechanical real buttons, just either icons on the touch screen or those virtual buttons that are touch sensitive and only show up when their back lights turn on so you have to memorize where they are if they are not lit up.

I followed the steps and reset my toners. However, it still indicates, "Open the top cover and then install toner cartridge." I would appreciate any suggestions.

Updated to the lastest firmware on my L3270CDW as of 1/20/24 (V1.35 MAIN, V1.14 SUB1) and this toner reset method works just fine. Remember, there's also a battery on the toner drum chip that can go bad, as well as a mechanical switch that flips when the toner drum claims to be empty. Each of those can trigger the replace toner error.

I HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH NEW CARTRIDGES, sometimes it gives the black another time the yellow, although i didn't print even 50 pages!!! I heard about using a tape on one side of cartridge and so you can stop printer from counting the number of pages? I am a subscriber indeed, your way of explaining is very simple and clear. Thanks a bunch! I mistakenly installed the black cartridge into the wrong slot when changing 2 colors. The black cartridge thereafter was being read as empty, when in fact it was brand new. Multiple attempts to reset (just like you said) were unsuccessful. Your method worked perfectly on my MFC 8900 CDW.
