Remember getting a bollocking of an Argyll Sgt maj in Stirling ACIO, i phoned to ask for a travel warrant to get a flight back to my Regiment in Germany. He got pear shaped because i didn’t scream , yes Sir no Sir enough times on the phone. I remember he had swallow tattoos on his hands, really was a clown. Even the Sgt in the ACIO with him ( also an Argyll) rolled his eyes at the Sgt maj. Glad i never joined them😂

Shame they cut the Argylls down to a company . Mind you it was planned for a long time & even in the late 60s. In Stirling ACIO they were all mainly Argylls & definitely tried to get you into the Argylls, infact the Argylls Sgt got a bit annoyed when i said i didn’t want to join the infantry. He got over it because he had a Quarter at the QV school in Dunblane & came in the Dunblane Hotel one Saturday afternoon. He hadn't drove far so his Quarter was in Dunblane as he still had slippers on his feet😂 He recognised me & i said hello & asked if he wanted a drink. He said no let me buy you one & he bought me & my friend a pint. I think he was just a fiercely loyal Argyll.

I grew up near Stirling in Dunblane & even our war memorial looks better than that. The one in Dunblane is much larger & is situated across the River Allan facing the Cathedral. Most named on there were Black watch as Dunblane came under Perthshire back in the day. Saw a few other cap badges like Royal Artillery which i served in on there. Was also some Royal Scots soldiers named on there too.

My father David Anderson Martin MM served with the 2nd Battalion RHR ‘The Black Watch’ in Palestine in 1938 where as a Lance Sergeant he was awarded his Military Medal for his actions during an ambush of a Convoy he was in command of. During WW2 he was promoted(emergency commission) Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion and eventually rose to the rank of Temp Major A Glutton for Punishment He went back to Palestine having transferred to the Police Mobile Force of the Palestine Police as an Assistant Superintendent and just missed being killed in the King David Hotel

My father joined the Black Watch in 1936, enlisting in Perth at the age of only 16 (he falsified his age somehow and got away with it). He served as part of the 2nd Battalion's operations mentioned here from 5th May 1937 until 1st Sept 1939 when he was posted to the 7th Division HQ in Egypt. He was only just 19 even then. He was therefore a similar age to several of the casualties, and I guess by sheer luck of the draw, he survived to fight on throughout the war, the Malayan emergency and the Aden crisis until he left the army to retire to the other Perth, in Australia. He passed away in 1992.

My grandfather had a bit of a run-in with the Scots, the 51st Highland Division and the 9th Highland Division, at the Battle of Arras in 1917. He managed to get back to the rear positions after the frontline had been overrun by the Royal Scots and the Seaforth Highlanders while being wounded in the neck by a bullet from "a Scotsman in a girl's dress".

My maternal grandfather served with the 7th Bn The Norfolk Regiment (Pioneers), with the 51st at St Valery and was taken POW. We still have photos of the POW camp he was held in. He eventually was released from captivity by a Red Cross prisoner exchange due to failing health weeks before the long march. This was a fascinating insight into not only the history of the 51st but also into Rommels personality and interests. This event is definitely worthy of a full documentary

Both my mom and dad(10 Scott Street), uncle(3 Bannerman street) were in the Blitz, heard stories of it many times. Including being up in the hills on the second night and watching the bombers fly low over head. I keep looking at the pictures and wondering who is who and where the were living. Did they know the family? Where did they all end up going... My family moved all the way over to America
