This song made me cry…unlocked so many happy memories🤗🥰

The song “VENTURA HIGHWAY”, released by the band AMERICA in 1972 has always been one of my all-time favorites. I love it! It captures the airy atmosphere and legendary beauty of the world-renowned stretch of palm-lined sunlit road known as the Ventura Highway that traces the westernmost edge of our continent between land & sea, overlooking the great Pacific Ocean whose waves ceaselessly crash in a rhythmic timelessness upon the California coast, all of this under the vast canopy of a heavenly cloudscaped sky. That atmosphere is in my bones. I spent the first ten years of my life there (the whole of the 1960’s) -was born in Harbor City adjacent to Long Beach. I well know the atmosphere that is captured so well in this song. That early impressionable first decade of my life there was time enough for the special airy California coast atmosphere to permeate my soul and become a part of me. This song never fails to take me back. To a time when it was safe for kids to play, walk, and ride their bicycles all over their California neighborhoods and cities all day long without supervision, only coming back home at dusk when the street lights began to light up. As Don Henley prophetically sang in the Eagles song about California called “The Last Resort”: “…Call someplace ‘Paradise’ and you can kiss it goodbye.” The predominant political party of California and all who have supported it, have pretty much brought those words to pass. Nevertheless, the Ventura Highway is still there, still offering to any who get the privilege to travel it, the same unique natural California coastline’s airy atmosphere that it always has under heavenly vaulted skies full of sailing clouds that sometimes -at least to the childhood version of the man who later wrote the song- look like “alligator lizards in the air”!

I grew up in rural North England and was lucky enough to visit family in California throughout my childhood. This song reminds me of my first trip, driving around California for 3 weeks 😊

South bound on PCH into Ventura. Been there done that many, many times. Oh so many years ago my brother and I would go north on PCH to Oxnard/Ventura and launch his boat so we could go out and fish the Channel Islands. Miss my brother and those times.

About 45 years ago I was a bartender in NJ. A band named Zodiac played for weeks in the bar. This was one of the only songs they knew. Ear bug.

I think my wife, now in heaven, put all this together to remind me of the LOVE we had travelling Ventura Highway. We met in high school in 1972 in Santa Monica and went to UC Santa Barbara together from 74 to 78. We went back to Santa Monica on weekends on Ventura Highway. So I know every off ramp every overpass. This song played on the radio; replayed with this video it kindles memories as a gift from my wife in Heaven. Together We had five kids and (now) ten grandchildren. She passed away two years ago.
