A Soaring Addiction
Canada
Приєднався 22 лис 2014
Hi . I have created this channel to showcase soaring on Vancouver Island ,in British Columbia Canada.
I own a Kestrel 19 meter glider and fly with the other members of the Alberni Valley Soaring Association.
Although cross country flights are pretty much limited to out and returns due to rugged unlandable terrain,
it is an extremely scenic place to fly. I hope you enjoy "A Soaring Addiction" videos. Thank you for watching.

AVSA OLC
This is a flight that Ward and I did last summer . The OLC or online soaring competition is what many pilots do.It is a friendly competition with fellow pilots from their own club, or world wide.
Ward and I compete in the club class against each other, and against
other Canadian clubs.
Scoring is calculated from distance between 5 turpoints . These turnpoints
do not necessarily have to be pre determined ,as the program can figure this out from the downloaded information from your data logger.
Additional points for an FAI triangle ( a designated task ) will be scored if it is detected in your data.
Thanks to my subscribers for supporting my channel and thank
you to every body who watched another Soaring Addiction Production.
Cheers

My buddy Ward Clapham went to Kiripotib Namibia to a Cross country soaring camp in November 2024. He gave me a bunch of clips that he took while flying down there, to make him a video. I hope I have done it justice. He had an amazing experience down there flying hundreds of kilometers a day over the high Namibia plains. Thank you for watching my videos. Les

On this particular day ,lee side conditions existed on the Beaufort Range. Sometimes you can climb up through on the face ,but it is usually better to take a high tow and get directly over top of the ridge. If you release a little too low, you might be able to stay up in the lee side thermals, but you risk getting trapped below the top as I did. You get to spend the afternoon watching your frien...

Although I have never had many views on any of my timelapse videos,I thought I would give it another shot. With gliding season over I decided to get checked out in the Alberni Flying Clubs Cessna 172 . This marked the first time I have flown a powered aircraft since I sold my airplane back in 2020. If you look close you can see me doing circuits mid video.

I am stilling Laughing Out Loud...You kicked my butt Les as far as the furthest turnpoints, elevation AGL and just maximizing the day. Looking forward to 2025 where our handicaps are almost identical.
I won't have any options as far as excuses go, if I lose the day. Going to have to polish the hell out of my glider. . . . . . . . .daily ! Oh and just my luck. Orbital polishers are on sale at Canadian Tire !
Looks like a great day out there✈✈
It was a lot of fun despite the low cloudbase was keeping us closer to home. The handicapping system works quite well . It forces you to fly to the best of your abilities.
Too bad about losing. Nice right turn though!!
Yes , I have to start doing more right hand turns. Sometimes at the end of the day I'll thermal up all to the right but somehow turning left seems more natural. And I am much more efficient in that direction. ( maybe because my ASI is on that side ?)
Happy New Year Ward, that one day with three gliders for almost 1.000k was incredible. Would be great to see you in Kiripotip again. Cheers
Happy 2025 yes it was an amazing day and I will be coming again next Nov
I find the whole thing just so interesting... Thanks for sharing you're awesome adventure... Happy New Year... ✌️
That is just so cool... Wow, what a landscape... 🙂✌️
How do you manage "toilet-ing" in an 8 hrs flight?
Thank you for tuning into my channel. There are some gliders that have a "pee tube " built right into the glider , that just dumps the pee overboard. It might sound a bit disgusting but as this would be done at least a few thousand feet above the ground ,it would evaporate before ever hitting the ground. The other options some pilots use are external catheters , commercially available pee bags ,or adult diapers. I've known pilots to "hold it " for 8 hours or more but I don't recommend it. What you eat and drink has a lot to do with your "duration " I always have a toasted cheese sandwich and a banana before I fly ,as this seems to have an anti diuretic effect. I find combined with launching "slightly" dehydrated and having my sandwich and banana, I can continuously sip 2 litres of water over the course of a 4 or 5 hour flight with no "urgency towards the end. For longer flights, one of the above systems is recommended.
Great question - I really kept my fluid intake down before take off and went with depends diapers
Looks fun to be up their soaring✈
It certainly is Age. Always appreciate your questions and comments,
Pretty cool Ward
lol at the description! it was nice of ward to let you film. happy flying! 🛴❤
nice! i flew a plane once. had a friend in college who was an instructor. cheers, les! 🛴❤
Thanks for watching. No more flying until next spring for me ( living on the "Wet Coast " ) The full video from Wards Namibia adventure, will debut on Christmas Eve.
Looks like a nice flight😁
Namibia is the " Holy Grail " of cross country soaring. Huge expanse of high desert plains ( rough and unlandable ) with some convenient flat hard pan areas here and there as potential out landing areas. This particular landing was a precautionary one to avoid a sandstorm that was passing over the home airport after coming home from a long flight.
@@lessainsbury8508 that's nice that it has all those natural landing spots😃😃
The gravity point is center for flyings. A jet wings on high golden meltings. One time only please.
Beautiful colors and the plane is contrast beautiful over the terrain. Looking forward to seeing more +1
Thank you for tuning into my channel.I'm glad you enjoyed the content. I will certainly be doing more "ride along videos " in the future . Cheers Les
Looks like an eventful glide😁😁
Yes it was Age. Some flights conditions are so good, it's so easy. Other days like this make you a better pilot. I've had a few memorable flights where I was just hanging on in marginal conditions , and managed to wait it out until things changed in my favour, and had an awesome flight. Persistence and patience are key to success. Best of the season to you. Cheers Les
@@lessainsbury8508 do you ever get worried you're not going to make it back to the landing strip?
@@agesadventures Keeping within gliding distance of the airport is something you have to monitor. My glider has a 44 to 1 glide .This means for every mile of altitude , I can glide 44 miles. You do have to have a safety margin . I am quite conservative and fly giving myself a 20 to 1 glide to get back to the circuit altitude of the airport ( 1400' ) My flight computer with GPS based information, will display this information, and, will give a constant update on how high I will arrive above the airport based of the performance data ( polar chart ). Perhaps I should do a video on this ?
@@lessainsbury8508 yes, a video on that would be quite interesting!
Beautiful video would love to try that it’s amazing

Why didn’t you deploy the sustainer?? 😂
I did ,but it was only an imaginary one. And it failed to start. 🤣
@@lessainsbury8508 nice video in any case. Hearing your thinking process makes it so much more interesting than just the pretty pictures.
@@PeterHall24997 This was a new challenge for me. The audio process was a new challenge for me as I had to edit and re edit several times I'm hoping to do more of this type of video in the future, to help newbe pilots to better understand the local conditions. Cheers Les
i like timelapses, glad you put it up. caught ya doing your circuits. i'm going to stop blowing up your comments now. cheers! 🛴❤
i also can't wait for spring! i guess with flying the whole, "no bad weather, only bad gear" doesn't really apply. 😉
Yes unless you take off for the winter to fly in warmer climates ( like a couple of my friends have done )
this is super cool, i think i see a soaring addiction in my future. kinda seemed a bit scary based off of your descriptions of what's going on. how did you get into this? shout out to age for bringing us together! 🛴❤
To some this could seem a bit scary, But as you gain more experience your comfort level goes up. To remain safe in aviation, You have to stay within your capabilities and your aircrafts operating limits. Thank you for viewing my channel and commenting Cheers Les
In answer to your other question, I have been involved in recreational aviation for 52 year . I had a lot of experience hang gliding ,and because I had many hours with my private pilots licence, the transition to flying sailplanes was easy. In your area the Chicago Gliding Club operates out of Minooka Illinois As with most gliding clubs, you will always find wonderful helpful people and will be able to give you an introductory flight . ua-cam.com/video/f8JYrNHmtdk/v-deo.htmlsi=lE2wHqWCKg-m8ZeL

Bumpy or not, I can't wait to get back up there!
Although big smooth thermals are fun, I have to admit ,I love those days when I'm bashing my way up in the lee side of the Beauforts !
It looked bumpy in places up there. Beautiful views😍
Thanks for watching Age . It was a little spicey that day!
that was a fun video thanks for sharing Walt and Joanne

Thank for your kind words and viewing my channel. I have a few Go Pro Hero 8's with image stabilization donated to my cause ., courtesy of Formula Photographic Inc. Once I figure these cameras out , I'll be able to have better video clips when I'm using the stick ,or from my head cam.
@@lessainsbury8508Nice, I just rejected using head cam, so many shakes and turns, doesn't work for me. I'm using DaVnici Resolve for camera stabilization and movie creation works pretty accurate
Thanks for that tip. I am using Davinci Resolve as well but was unaware that this feature existed.
FUN Kid...did I get it right😁 Was that a parachute he was wearing? It's cool to see what's involved with getting these gliders towed to flight.
Fun KID . I wasn't thinking of that one. I'll pass that one on to Ward. Yes that is a parachute he is wearing. ( most pilots do ) Due to the fact we are in close proximity to each other while sharing thermals ,it does increase the chance of a midair collision ( although very rare ) Still it's better to be wearing one and never needing it, than the alternative scenario . Thank you for watching.
@@lessainsbury8508 I think wearing one is a great idea! Safety is a pretty important thing😃

Was that in a field of hay to be cut down? The pilot sure was lucky!
Unbelievably lucky. The field would have been completely cut with cattle in it, a week later !
@@lessainsbury8508 Yeah, that would be no good if there were cows in there! Was the farmer upset about the hay getting mowed down by the glider? I'm guessing there is some sort of insurance for gliders in case of accidents?
@@agesadventures The farmer was pretty understanding about it..The field was already half cut, so the crop damage was minimal. There is liability insurance but in the case of crop damage, you are probably better off to pay it out of your own pocket. Landing in tall grass can cause a glider to ground loop, which in this case it did. ( undamaged ) This probably saved the glider and pilot from a worse outcome.
@@lessainsbury8508 that's good news then! Glad the farmer was understanding too😁

Are we all thinking " Lockheed U-2 spyplane " ... only the follow-on Corvette Sportscar is missing. 🤔
Thanks for watching. Yes just like the U2 it lands on the mainwheel and tailwheel. But unlike the U2 I do have 2 tiny rollerblade style wheels in the wingtips . I do not have a Corvette to chase. Will a 2002 Chevy S-10 pickup truck do ? 🙂

If you are ever back on the island Donny, come on out and I'll take you for a flight !
That looks like a really awesome flight up there! Beautiful views😀
Thanks Age. I feel a bit lazy doing a re-edit out of my private Vimeo Channel but since UA-cam has become more liberal on copywritten music being allowed , It has freed me up to show some of my earlier videos. I was looking to get more content from other places around the valley this year, but I missed some golden opportunities from places like Mt. Arrowsmith , Mt 50 40 , and the far west end of Great Central Lake , when I opted not to take my cameras.
@@lessainsbury8508 did you opt not to take the cameras because there as a hassle taking them?
@@agesadventures During the best day we had this year, back in June ,I was trying for an early launch to make the best of the day.. I was having difficulty syncing's my cameras to my remote. I wanted to launch before 1:30 p.m. but time was running out. The towplane was on it's way down so the decision was made to ditch the cameras. Worst part though was I took a low tow ( 1700 ' ) and then wasted 45 minutes getting up over the ridge. Doh ! Many wasted video and photo opps missed that day !
@@lessainsbury8508 ok, makes sense that you were having remote problems so you stopped fiddling around. You still got out there to fly though so that is still good😁
Does it also have spoilers?
Thanks for watching my video. Yes is does have spoilers as well as landing flaps. I initially used quite a bit of spoiler during this test but reduced them to almost zero at about 200 feet as I was concerned about making a perfect round out .
So will that need to be bolted together at the new spot? If so, are you going to video that process?
I did record the whole assembly of the glider but it took around 2 1/2 hours. This is because we made a whole bunch of mistakes during the assembly because we were unfamiliar with this glider. There is only one stainless steel pin that holds the whole thing together. It has a taper on it so it will fit tight. The only thing is the wings have to be set at the right angle and elevation for everything to be able to slide together. All the controls have an automatic hookup. Once familiar with the glider, the whole assembly can be done in 20 minutes by 2 people. I have a video on Vimeo of the assembly , but I will probably edit that one down for UA-cam.
@@lessainsbury8508 wow, only one pin holding them in place! Better make sure it's seated properly in there! I can certainly relate to things taking longer to do the first time around. You've got to figure everything out first and then it becomes easy😁
Great! Congratulations, girls!
Both Sydney and Samantha have now begun training for their commercial pilots license .

Lucky my neighbours were in the right place at the right time to record such an excellent video.
@@lessainsbury8508 they really got some great shots!
WOW....that is soooo cool.... Thanks for the smile ✌
Thanks for stopping by my channel . Many happy hours of paddling your kayak in beautiful Michigan !
Fantastic views up there! What's the piece of string on the front of the glider on the glass for?
The string is a low tech version of the ball turn co ordinator that are in most general aviation aircraft. In order to properly co-ordinate a turn, you have to apply the right amount of rudder or the glider will slip if you try to turn with aileron alone. Too much rudder and it will skid ( tail towards the outside of the turn ) The yaw string will tell you if the glider is perfectly aligned to the airflow. If you are slipping or skidding your performance is reduced as the side of the fuselage is hitting the airflow and creating drag. So the secret to co-ordinated flight is to keep the string in the middle, using the rudder pedals. Most general aviation aircraft usually don't take much rudder to co-ordinate the turns but gliders with their long wingspans require much more rudder input. Thank you for your question Age.
@@lessainsbury8508 that's really interesting! Such a simple tool, yet really useful! Thanks for the explanation, Les😁
Looks like a wonderful place to glide. I am a local advanced drone pilot. Very cool animation, I am super jealous.

It looks so cool up there😁 Awesome views😀
Thanks for for your support of my channel . This place always amazes me with the views.
How hard is it to land without the airspeed indicator?
It depends on a lot of things ,but mainly experience. Low time pilots might have a lot of anxiety and difficulty with it. You certainly don't want to approach too slow, but then again you don't want excess speed. With a glider you only have one shot at it. I have had two airspeed indicator failures over the years. One in my Cessna and one in my glider. Both were non events as I had a lot of time on both aircraft and could recognize how it should feel at different airspeeds Also flying hang gliders for 37 years which have no airspeed indicators, has given me good intuition for "feeling the aircraft "
@@lessainsbury8508 thanks! That's interesting to know.
Nice views up there!
Thanks for your support of my channel and your comments. The thing I like about the Alberni Valley is even when the weather conditions are not good for soaring, there always seems to be spectacular weather watching opportunities.

I used he chute many times without any major problems. You need to get the speed you need first. Pull the deploy and kick the rudders to make sure the box drops off... then a short delay ... You know if it has deployed..!. You need to maintain the speed ... its easy to get slow, but regaining lost speed takes time and consumes a lot of height. The only exception is going into a small tight field, when I would deploy just as I approached the boundary and at about 20 feet and without any extra speed. It would open just as you flare and would help you to stop in a much shorter distance. Another time I deployed at about 300' going into a field and began to undershoot... I reduced the landing flaps from full to half, hoping that would be sufficient but no.... so waited until close to the field... got the speed back to normal and on normal approach path... Jettisoned the chute and then pulled fully landing flap again and then airbrake and got into the field fine, but it was hard work. The Chute was up a tree... which kept me busy for an hour of so...but retrieved it. In a Strong crosswind, I would jettison the chute on the ground when I still had good directional control, to prevent the chute initiating a ground loop. Landing on runways, like the video, gives the chute box a bit of a hard time as it bounces along the tarmac !!...
Thanks for sharing your experiences with your drogue chute Craig. Yes the asphalt is not an ideal surface to be dragging the chute. Unfortunately it was the only option for me to test it out on. At least I know what to expect if I ever need to us it.
